here is the first entry in my 2014 studio sound diary. i'm over a week late because i've been setting up my new studio and been in a mess of wires.

today, after i wired my effects and synth rack i tested the connections and did this simple little sound. it's a patch i made on the virus ti being looped by an old lexicon prime time. the whole thing runs through a reverb on an eventide h3000.

it's simple, but i think could be the basis of something nice.

today's sound is from the modular. it consists of tones from the e350 and e340 as well as a piston honda. the volumes are being modulated by a clock divided make noise function. the oscillators go into an mmg filter with a divided pulse knocking the strike input and then the whole thing feeds a phonogene with which i sampled, looped and pitched down and mixed back with the original oscillators. everything then goes into an intellijel uvcf band pass filter with slight modulations from a c3 knob recorder. the final output feeds into an eventide h7600 reverb.

i had no plans when i started this patch. no goal. just wanted to create something sort of icy, yet warm.

this is a very short sound as i ran out of time to make something more for the day. this sound is a phrase i played on a ukelele time stretched by a qubit nebulae eurorack module. i just got this module today and find it incredibly inspirational.

the sound is just the nebulae and it's going through reverb again as i never changed that routing from the previous day.

this one came out a lot more atonal than i originally intended. it consists of two layers… the first is a frozen guitar sample in the nebulae eurorack module being scrubbed through by an lfo from the synthtech  e355 and then feeding into a mungo g0 and finally into an intellijel uvcf bandpass filter. the 2nd layer is the e350 oscillator being played by a make noise wogglebug while i manually morph between waveforms.

not quite sure what i think of it, but the purpose of these daily sounds isn't to make great sounds, it's to explore ideas and exercise the brain.

ahhh, it's funny how these modular sounds go so often. they start out as one thing and 10 minutes later you're in completely different territory.

i set out this evening to do some simple bell/sine waves being played from a rene sequencer. i just got the rene, and i finally got a grayscale panel for the make noise wogglebug, which makes it a whole lot easier to understand. so my goal was to use a lot of wogglebug and rene and sine waves from the dpo oscillator… and to do something simple, melodic and pretty.

well, one thing lead to another and i can't even explain this patch at this point. it's still based on the dpo, wogglebug, and rene, but there's a couple of frozen loops from the echophon and phonogene. the wonderful pittsburgh modular filter is the main filter.

to hear where this sound started would have put the whole post in context but i wasn't recording at the beginning. it's one thing i really really love about modular synthesizers - how organic and alive they are. a couple little twists of knobs on a module and massive changes can be sent all the way down the line. you can lose something you've done so easily, and that's part of why it's a wonderful world to explore.

Akari is the third album from Tokyo duo Illuha. Following 2011’s debut Shizuku (12k1067) and 2013’s Interstices (12k2028), Akari takes the next artistic step for the band. While Shizuku was recorded in the US and completed separately by the artists, Interstices captured the duo creating their exceptionally detailed music together live during a Japaneses tour. Akari, in turn, is the first studio album where Illuha recorded and mixed together, throughout the entire process. The beautiful st-robo studio in Tokyo put a collection of amazing equipment at their fingertips, from vintage mics and outboard gear to a vast collection of instruments, both acoustic and electronic. Their writing sessions were numerous and long with details meticulously obsessed over for nearly a year. The result is the most bewildering music Illuha have created to date. An album swimming with the most delicately tactile sounds and instrumentation that draws the listener in with hushed, motionless attention.

While Illuha’s Corey Fuller and Tomoyoshi Date are often drawn to the most sparse notes of Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, acoustic grand piano and guitar, the breadth of instrumentation is partially what makes Akari so abosrbing. They have succeeded in creating their own universe of sound, so beautifully recorded, where each element not only has its own space but connects and interacts so fluidly with the other sounds. It is as if they are placed perfectly by nature, the compositions are fluid and organic, a far cry from anything calculated or structured. It is this open space that the music exists in which in turn defines the music itself. There is ample room to breathe within this forest of gentle tines, bubbling analogue synthesizers, clicking percussion and quiet field recordings. This is subtlety at its most refined; hushed without being saccharine, distant without being morose.

Akari is the Japanese word for light. Conceputally the duo used this word as a guide, as if they were searching through the dark, trying to keep the light alive, as if one is cradling a candle doing everything in their power to keep it alight in a storm. It is this almost visceral sense of sheltering, of protection, that gives Akari a very human and personal sound whose intensely deep focus is as impressive as it is arresting.

Parallel Landscapes is the first solo full-length album from Swiss artist Steinbrüchel on 12k, despite his relationship with the label and apperances on compilations, collaborations (Status, with Frank Bretschneider (12k1033)) and EP releases (Mit Ohne, (12k2010)). It seems that Steinbrüchel was waiting for the right moment to release such an illustrious album that is not only a release of music but of visual art as well.

Parallel Landscapes consists of a compact disc in a cd wallet and a beautifully printed sixty page colour printed booklet with a laser stenciled wrap-around cover conceptualized and designed by Steinbrüchel featuring photographs from Taylor Deupree and an essay by Lawrence English. The booklet and cd wallet are housed in a slipcase printed inside and out in black and white on contrasting paperstocks.

The music on Parallel Landscapes was created with the design process in mind. Steinbrüchel engaged himself with ideas of «designing» music instead of making or writing music and about the importance of music existing with (or without) visual enhancement.

The ideas of landscape, while not new in the musical world, were prevalent throughout the creative process. Music vs. landscape, music as horizontal layers, drawing new curves (landscapes) over sound files, imposing one landscape onto another and hearing/seeing the results. However, the album isn¹t just about horizontal combinations but vertical inbetweens as well. What happens from one event to the next? What happens when events are combined? How does the addition of one object (audio, visual) redefine another object next to it? What happens to a table when a chair is placed in front of it? ... And how does all of this coalesce into sonic and visual space?

There¹s an incredible amount of exploratory thought behind Parallel Landscapes that make this one of Steinbrüchel¹s most ambitious projects to date. His music has become increasingly refined but always retaining his signature sound. Still using the ideas of sine waves and pure tones but now softened with time, his palette stretches across electronics into a variety of found and acoustic sources. Bell tones are in the forefront, interspersed with the soft crackles of noise and static. Tones are stretched across the visual plane like a bell being carried across the land forever duplicating itself. Parallel Landscapes is engaging and reflective and sets a new standard in Steinbrüchel¹s creative output.

With over 100 physical releases since its inception by Taylor Deupree in 1997, New York-based music label 12k has decisively defined and developed the concept of minimalism in the realms of electronic music for more than a decade.
