I started off learning piano at around 6 years old, but only realised my ear for music when I could pick out melodies I heard on the radio & from then on I started writing my own music & playing long into the night, to the point where my parents told me to stop so they could go to sleep!
In my teenage years I joined bands & learnt basically on the fly how to work as a group. Once I realised that keyboards were not as portable & able to be played on beaches / around campfires, I taught myself guitar. By adding drums, harmonica & bass to my arsenal, the stage was set for a fully working band to record in my garage. Since setting up my home studio, I love recording a tune each week & especially love collaborating with all the extremely talented musicians on soundcloud. I'm a full time musician, with many different hats in the music community. Including songwriter, composer, live musician & blog writer.

I appreciate all genre of music which helps me expand my musical horizon and allows me to experience new talents which in turn fuel my own creativity musically.
My music expresses my feelings, my personality and gives an intimate picture of various moments and experiences throughout my life. In truth, my music is my voice and my life story shared though the melody of each of my songs.

Welcome to my Soundcloud profile! I'm a guitar player from Southampton, England. This is a collection of compositions recorded by myself at my small home studio setup.

Paul is a self produced singer/songwriter, multi instrumentalist and live performer of songs and
instrumental tracks.

Paul also co writes with singer/songwriter Annette Reis who has performed on the same bill as numerous established artists including Robert Plant and Jimmy Page at the Buxton Opera House performing in the Alexis Korner Tribute Concert some years ago.

They write songs that you can grove into and songs that you can just sit and enjoy. U.K. artist and guitarist Paul Birtwell's "Continuous Light" is a mixture of acoustic guitar with synthesizer keys, and programmed drums. The arrangements have plenty of dynamic contrast, and Paul is a very tasteful player. I like the way he clearly gets to the point of what he's trying to express with economy of notes, but with great attention to detail. For example in "Field of Horses", the theme has very nice string lines that enhance the melody and sections, but sound natural and don't get in the way of the main guitar. There's electric bass on some of the songs, and Paul switches between acoustic and electric. There's even alto saxophone on "Shine", and as with all the songs on the CD, nothing is too loud or too fast. The sax and guitar sounds blend well, and the drums keep a steady light rock feel.
