Hi i’m Gigi — he/his — Austin, TX — I was a childhood ice hockey star

How is everything going with you right now?

I have been fortunate enough to be well.. been using this year off from work to dive into a practice and learn some discipline.

How did you get your dj name?

I got it from my partner, Mimi — she flipped my original g-name into gigi & it stuck. I never liked my birth name much anyway + it’s cute to match.

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

ry, tito fuego/mister water wet, charles, bobby, nueen, boundary, jel, purelink, pascäal, ian kim judd, jung dj, shiner, downstairs j, hysterical love project,  perila, oli/px, thurlow joyce+ many more.. so many friends exploring inspiring places these days

If you had to describe yourself as a flower,which one would it be and why? 

Mimi says “frost flowers because they’re ephemeral”

Favorite weird drug/mind altering experience?

Sensory deprivation tank before the rave at Shirley’s Temple (r.i.p.)
What was your first gig? How did it go? 

A show put together by Ben Aqua at an upstairs club on downtown Congress that I don’t recall. I was 18 & had only started making music on ableton a few months prior, and played a live set that mostly consisted of pressing play on a 30 min composed production mix with a little knob twiddling & dj drop triggering. considering that, I’d say it went pretty well

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

I think it’s obvious, but increased representation without tokenism. also, turn away from the dj & look at your fellow dancers.

Any cool releases upcoming for Gi Gi this year? 

I don’t want to speak too soon, but I do have a couple of records in the pipeline with quiet time & index, both of which I’m very excited about. working on some more uptempo material as kept that should be seeing the light of day soon as well.

The next instalment in the Phase Group Mix series is delivered by dear friend and contributing artist to the label, Low Bat. 

Low Bat lives amongst the black coal hills of northern France. When he isn’t marking textbooks and exposing Neue Deutsche Welle to the classrooms, the French DJ, musician and teacher keeps himself busy playing with his band Jean Luc, co-running the Yellow Light of Death festival and curating radio as 1/3 of the team behind Tblisi’s Mutant Radio. 

On top of this, he makes up 1/2 of Lowspace, the newest additions to Phase Group, who’s split tape with Lostsoundbytes will be coming out in December

His Phase Group Mix is a masterfully sequenced mad ride through post punk, psych rock, French trip hop, and proto trance. Thanks Louis!

‘Crude Principles’ was recorded last month by Mr. Isopoulos over in Athens - ‘A mixtape inspired by friends, Venice and the deep bush’. 

We met Panagiotis last year while over playing a super special show in an old factory in Pireaus. The gig featured live oud, a modular synth performance and a solo percussion show using nothing but old materials from the factory by Christos Chondropoulos, who you might know from our Athenian Primitivism album. After the performances Fergus DJ’ed followed by Boomkat’s own Conor Thomas late into the night. Great times.

The weekend took a special turn after Panagiotis drove Tako, Terra Exotica and I out to a particularly Lynchian town called Marathonas. Many drinks were shared at a slightly time-forgotten beach bar and then at the even more Lynchian ‘Roadhouse’. The drive there and back was soundtracked by some super old burned CD’s Panagiotis had which took us all back to those 2010-2015 golden years, hearing some tracks for the first time in forever.

This mix features tons of crazy industrial, oddball futuristic library and global folk traditions and was one of the coolest things we heard recently so we wanted to share it too. Check Panagiotis on soundcloud here >>

About a half of Phuong-Dan's closing set at this year's Meakusma Festival

Phuong-Dan’s sets are a hypnotizing, compelling mixed bag of rhythms and influences. Consistently exploring moods by jumping back and forth between musical fields with some sort of defiant approach. He combines gigs all over the world with project specific works and musical programming. A good example of the latter are the Gatto Musculoso nights he hosts at Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg since 2006, which through the years have seen artists of every shape and size. Since 2021 he runs dispari – a label and platform for all kinds of auditory publications, collaborations and performances at various places.
