Detroit MC Phat Kat drops an unreleased track produced by J Dilla and featuring La Peace, to announce the reissue of his 2007 "Carte Blanche" album.

Phat Kat says: "We decided to re-release the "Carte Blanche" album because it was put out right before the internet blew up, so it never really got to a lot of listeners. And it was a really good project that slipped through the cracks. It came together during the time me and Dilla were signed to Payday Records, but when the label folded we never got a chance to record a full album. We recorded "It Don’t Get No Liver Than This" for the 1st Down album but the label folded and it didn’t come out."

Originally released in 2007, Phat Kat’s 2nd studio album “Carte Blanche” is getting a re-release on July 27th via Below System Records. The deluxe edition will includes 2 new bonus tracks both produced by J Dilla.

“Carte Blanche” includes production by J Dilla, Black Milk, Young RJ, Nick Speed and features by Elzhi, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, T3 and more. The 2 Dilla produced bonus tracks “World Premier” and “It Don’t Get No Liver Than This” with a featuring by La Peace, were recorded in 1996 and 1997.

Phat Kat is celebrating the impending re-release of his phenomenal 2007 album, ‘Carte Blanche,’ by sharing the raw, stripped-down, straight-up filthy “World Premiere” produced by none other than, J Dilla.

For those unfamiliar, Kat and Dilla had a special bond that led to them working together on their respective solo careers and as part of Dilla’s group, Slum Village. The late producer would often use the large-voiced rapper as a testing ground for his dirtier instrumentals, which would sometimes result in gems like “World Premiere.” Recorded in 1996—a full 11 years before Carte Blanche’s initial release—this joint is a ripped-from-the-cassette banger that’s bursting with life and personality on all fronts.

For Phat Kat, it’s an opportunity to talk his sh*t over one of Dilla’s grimier, barebones instrumentals, which is very much in line with what he was producing at that time. And among other bars, the chorus of “Emcees out there, you better stand clear/ That n***a Phat comin’ with the world premiere” is bound to get wrapped around your brain for days to come.

“World Premiere” is now available for stream and download through all digital retailers, and is one of two Dilla-produced bonus tracks on the ‘Carte Blanche’ re-release, which hits digital retailers and streaming platforms this Friday, July 27 via Below System Records.

Oddisee "High Horse" (feat. Olivier Daysoul) [14KT RMX]

Ypsilanti, Michigan’s own golden child, Kendall Tucker, bka 14KT, is a multi-talented Artist/Producer/DJ. His musical roots came from growing up singing in the church choir. It was there and by studying his parent’s jazz and soul records, along with piano and upright bass lessons, Kendall learned the fundamentals of music.

14KT got his start as 1/7th of this mighty Hip-hop collective, The Athletic Mic League. He started out as an emcee, inspired by the sounds of Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Gangstarr, A Tribe Called Quest and Outkast. Finding it hard to get instrumental beats, KT started using the “Pause/Play/Record” method, by looping breaks on cassette tapes so the crew could rap over them. 

14KT’s solo career began in 2008. After a rich history with AML, he entered and won his first beat battle competition, in Red Bull Big Tune Detroit. Later that year, he released his debut instrumental LP, “The Golden Hour [Soundtrack].” The Golden Hour made its mark appearing on many year-end “top albums” lists. Okayplayer said “this is the sort of striking project that can singlehandedly create an artists following.” And so it did.

14KT is the last Big Tune national champion, which he went on to win in 2010.
He’s worked with the likes of Aloe Blacc, Black Milk, Bun B, Danny Brown, Elzhi, Jay Electronica, JMSN, Masta Ace, Mayer Hawthorne, Legendary Motown Funk Brothers guitarist Dennis Coffey and many others. His music was featured in the DVD for Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest documentary, “Beats, Rhymes, & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.” Live, he’s rocked with the Stones Throw crew, at Low End Theory, SXSW, on tour with Mayer Hawthorne, Slum Village, and across the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia.

To date, 14KT has released seven solo albums, as well as his collaborative Hip-hop album, "Takin Ls" with emcee Ozay Moore,  R&B/Soul album, “Saturn Return” with singer/songwriter AB, and “The Big Knock”, together with Mayer Hawthorne as the “Beat Wave” group Jaded Incorporated [Universal Republic/Casablanca Records]. Jaded Incorporated was born out of their mutual adoration for the Post-Punk and New Wave music of the early 1980′s, and Ghettotech music in the 90′s Detroit scene.

14KT is currently revving up to release another duo collaboration album with Michigan rapper Ro Spit, entitled "RSXGLD" to be released in 2017.
