Hadn't had goosebumps in a long time - but here they are!

This is a live recording, captured at Ego club in Düsseldorf, June 5 1999.  The music has been created with a self written step sequencer, the PX-18, controlling  a basic sample player and effects engine, all done in MaxMSP, running on a Powerbook G3. The step sequencer had some unique features, e.g. the ability to switch patterns independently in each track, which later became an important part of a certain music software.

I found the recording on a backup disk today. It has not been edited or mastered. During the first 20 minutes of the set, and before the 'encore' the Monolake CD 'Gobi' is playing in the background.

She plays a variety of genres, mainly techno, from experimental music to
ambient, disco and ethnic music, and has developed a unique, yet groovy and hypnotic style.

She have played at big festivals such as FUJIROCK FESTIVAL , a wide variety of domestic venues, and streamed on Dommune and frequently appear on LA's NTS radio, among others.

From Asia, e.x. Taiwan's Taipei Art Book Festival and at Ain and Seendosi in Seoul , Korea, to LA with Secret Circuit, at OutPut in New York and at The Block in Tel Aviv, and so on. Her success has left a solid mark on the international scene. as well.

Few producers can handle a synthesizer quite as masterfully as Alessandro Cortini.

The Italian musician has been building up a reputation for a few years now, under a plethora of different monikers, pushing his electronic instruments to near-breaking point. Cortini mastered the towering Buchla modular system, securing him a well-deserved spot on keys for Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails. This, however, is only the tip of the iceberg.

Last year Cortini dropped the excellent Sonno LP on Dominick Fernow’s Hospital imprint, and the Buchla was nowhere to be seen. Instead of showing his chops on an instrument that most musicians couldn’t dream of using, Cortini instead confined himself to the humble Roland MC-202. The 202 doesn’t have the reputation of some of its starrier Roland family, mainly because it’s notoriously difficult to use, but it’s basically a portable, keyboard-less SH-101 with a sequencer that requires an advanced intellect to take advantage of. The portable nature of the instrument allowed Cortini to pen tunes while on tour with Nine Inch Nails, and his follow-up LP, Risveglio, continues where Sonno left off.

This time around he’s added some other portable Roland instruments – the legendary silver pair, the TR-606 and the TB-303. The message and basic sound, however, remains intact. There’s no squiggly acid here; rather, Cortini finds a way to tailor the familiar instruments to his own very specific sound, and emerges with something haunting and personal.

That’s exactly the kind of thought behind this dense FACT mix – sure there are cuts from Plastikman, Aphex Twin and William Basinski, but these are drowned in abstract electronics and muted noise from Shifted, Powell and Peder Mannerfelt.

Alessandro Cortini’s Risveglio will be released on Hospital Productions on July 27.

To pick up five Grammy award nominations means you're pretty special, and American composer, electronic pioneer and neo-classical recording artist Suzanne Ciani is just that. In her early days she got pure magic out of the brand new Buchla synth that immediately set her apart and earned her the title of "America's first female synth hero". With a wealth of studio and live albums under her belt and new - as well as old but previously unreleased - ones coming as regularly as ever, she continues to be a pioneer more than forty years after first emerging. 

Ciani describes this mix less than one of her live sets and more like something for "a social gathering of friends and acquaintances for lunch or dinner." It draws on music from friends she admires and has worked with after meeting on tour around the world and kicks off with her latest archival release on Finders Keepers. The last track is "an old perennial favourite that still makes me cry a bit" and in between is an hour of glistening electronics, suspensory ambient and contemporary piano and percussion that lift your spirits in that way that beautiful music so often does.

All of the tracks delivered by the German producer here are either Vril originals or remixed by him, and almost all of this material is unreleased at the time of writing. A generous offering indeed, but what’s more impressive still is how Vril knits together these broken-beat techno joints into a cinematic whole, one which maintains a propulsive forward thrust even as it explores dub-techno scientifics, dystopian synthscapes and the keys-led quirkiness of late-90s IDM. The fact that Vril bookends the mix with passages of weightless, widescreen ambience emphasises the evocative qualities of his music still further.
