"This Slumber Session mix gave me a great opportunity to make a playlist of something I would want to listen to when unwinding, or to just fall asleep to. I wanted it to be able to exist in the background, without focus, whilst at the same time having elements of detail and beauty scattered amongst the layers of sound unravelling as the mix progresses.

In some ways you can think of it as a soundtrack to a dream. There are moments of calm flowing smoothly into more abstract sections. Textures build to go from sparse emotive landscapes to darker, brooding moments of tension. I wanted it to be dynamic, taking in a variety of styles and influences, whilst giving the listener a coherent experience and painting some interesting images in their minds.

It also gave me the chance to put in a lot of unreleased tracks of mine. I make a wide variety of styles outside of my normal output, so it was great to have an outlet for some of that material. There are also a lot of field recordings I've made over the last few years throughout the mix, including some from my travels. The opening section of music features the sounds of walks in Sydney and San Francisco, which at the time was just some subconscious grabbing of sound recordings without any kind of artistic purpose - it just sounded cool at the time. It seemed fitting when I realised where the sounds were from, as the mix would have been the perfect playlist for a lot of my sleep deprived travels.

I ended up getting so involved putting together this mix that there's a lot of live tweaks of outboard reverb and delay units layered on certain tracks to try and get the sense of space I wanted to achieve and give the mix some breathing space. I find that ambient music can be incredibly beautiful and achieve the range of emotions other music can. I hope that you enjoy the musical selection and can immerse yourself in it, even with the emphasis away from the hooks and rhythms of traditional electronic dance music."

Lang is the not-so-secret alias of UK-based produced Andrew Halford, who has worked with the likes of Foals as well as appearing alongside Ewan Pearson, Plaid and James Yuill. Dntel celebrates his new album The Human Voice with a special selection of unreleased remixes.

From his solo work as Dntel, to his various extracurricular projects - the biggest of which, his collaboration with Ben Gibbard The Postal Service, reformed for live shows last year - one thing binds Jimmy Tamborello's work: beauty.

He's clearly a lover of fluttering melodies and warm synthesiser washes, so it makes perfect sense that he's a huge Krautrock fan - and on FACT mix 463, he gives a first airing to Dntel mixes of acts like Roedelius and Michael Rother, as well as similarly heartstring-tugging music by Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Durutti Column.

Where Dntel's music can sometimes, such as on recent single 'If I Stay A Minute', favour skittish percussion, on FACT mix 463 he usually plumps for leisurely 4x4 kicks, letting the originals tracks' melodies - and his skilled, unshowy chopping of them - take centre stage. It's a real beauty.

One of the underground’s most beloved diggers steps up on a mid-week FACT mix.

Paul White enjoys being in the background. For close to a decade he’s been releasing spellbinding hip-hop, electronica and more, mostly on the One-Handed label run by close friend Alex Chase, while also producing for Danny Brown – who called White his “favourite producer to work with”. He also puts in shifts as a library music producer, last year working on BBC2 program ‘L8er’.

After a handful of albums on One-Handed, White this year struck up a relationship with veteran label R&S for the release of Shaker Notes. White’s most – ahem – musical album yet, it features live drums, bass, guitar and vocals, charting “the intoxication, heartbreak and ultimate triumph of a grand love affair.” We know: an electronic producer picking up the guitar is usually enough to make us pull a Tricky on their whole collection, but White’s music has always drawn as much from the Beatles as the Beatnuts, and it’s a move that makes perfect sense in his case.

FACT mix 464 not only adds context to Shaker Notes, it also feels representative of a slightly less grand love affair: the records that White just couldn’t live without. White might be a digger, but here he takes comfort in well-known records by Bjork, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, The Flaming Lips and more, while scattering in pieces of his own material and, inevitably, Gong. We wouldn’t quite call it no surprises, but it’s a timely reminder that sometimes, established records are well-known for a reason.

Métron Musik is very proud to announce the first in our series of world music mixtapes, and we've started somewhere completely out of this world.

Eternell is one of the many monikers of Ludvig Cimbrelius, a Swedish producer who works across a range of musical genres. It is also the name of his own imprint, through which he has released many of his own works and collaborations since 2012. Ludvig has put together a beautiful, heartbreaking and yet often uplifting 80 minutes of music for us in support of his new full length album ‘Life Will Set You Free’ (click 'Buy' to purchase the album). The mix revolves around an ambient core, with all tracks coming from the Eternell back catalog. I’m immensely proud to help promote such an inspired musical mind.

Well we've got Style(s), miles and miles; so much Style(s) that it's wasted. Okay, the Pavement pun doesn't really apply here – nothing's wasted when it comes to Styles Upon Styles (@ susrecords), one of the best around pushing NY's hardware scene + community forward. This one, the first available cut from Certain Creatures (@ certain-creatures)' forthcoming LP, is custom-fit for anything but grotty basements. "An Allegory..." is a beautiful sketch with traces of rainforest exotica, but not exactly suggesting serenity – the nature samples get worked into the rhythm, creating an atmospheric backdrop to get lost within. Certain Creatures indeed.

Detroit original Kyle Hall offers up this week’s mix, and rather than piece together the deep techno set you might expect, Hall has taken a trip into the unknown. An all-vinyl blend, the mix shifts slowly from ambience into searing noise without missing a beat, and while it might be missing the 4/4 chug some might be pining for, it certainly doesn’t cry out for it. Instead it feels more like a transmission from another planet: distorted, distant and fascinating.

Kyle Hall will be performing alongside Laraaji, Andres, Hashman Deejay and Pender Street Steppers this Saturday.
