The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast returns for a special pre-Christmas episode paying tribute to writer Alan Grant, who passed away in July this year.

In a discussion recorded at New York Comic Con, writer Garth Ennis, editor Dan Raspler, and comics critic Chloe Maveal discuss the impact and legacy of Grant's work, before Ennis reads a personal letter from Grant that reveals the secret origins of Alec Trench!

We then hear a special, never-before-aired interview recorded at the beginning of 2021, in which Grant talks alongside his friend and long-time co-writer John Wagner about how they met, their time working together, and their reflections of their distinguished careers. A not-to-be-missed interview, which was one of Grant's last.

From his first work on the demonicly badly-behaved alien infant Bradley to the lead up to the most iconic moment in Strontium Dog and the fever dream of Revere, Harrison's art was utterly unmistakeable and rewarding. In this episode, Molch-R talks to him about his life and career, from his childhood in south London to visiting battlefields of Ukraine in the name of art. Just like his work, Harrison's views on life and art are fascinating and challenging, but still completely his own.

Simon Harrison on Bradley, Revere & beyond

At the very end of 2023, the legendary artist John M Burns sadly passed away. While well known amongst 2000 AD fans for his extensive work on stories including Judge Dredd, The Order, and Nikolai Dante, Burns’ career spanned six decades and endeared him to generations of readers thanks to enthralling and enchanting work on TV tie-ins such as Champion The Wonder Horse, Doctor Who, Mission Impossible, Buck Rogers, Magnum P.I., as well as Dan Dare and Kelpie the Boy Wizard, plus phenominally successful newspaper strips such as The Seekers, Danielle, George & Lynne, Jane, and Modesty Blaise.

Whether pen and ink or fully-painted, John's work brought so much joy, evoked so much admiration and respect from fans and his peers alike. A true artist's artist, he was someone whose work is instantly recognisable and someone who maintained the highest quality throughout that extraordinarily long career full of page after page of perfect comic art.

In this episode, we pay tribute to this extraordinary talent by talking to just some of the people who knew him – Tim Quinn is a comics writer and editor who worked with John for many years, Sean Phillips is a multi-awardwinning artist, Robbie Morrison is the co-creator and writer of Nikolai Dante, and Paul Duncan is an editor and writer working on a book about John's extraordinary legacy. Together, they paint a vivid picture of the man, his work, and his legacy.

A Tribute to John M Burns

From "gifted child" to million-selling comic artist, Liam Sharp's artistic journey has been one of high hopes and hard work. Beginning his career as an apprentice of legendary The Rise & Fall of The Trigan Empire artist Don Lawrence, Sharp went on to debut at 2000 AD while still in his teens and co-create the precocious homocidal teenager PJ Maybe, before his work saw him propelled to stardom in the comics boom of the 1990s. The Thrill-Cast sits down for a long talk with Sharp following his move back to Britain from the US, discussing his feelings about his career, mental health, his time working with Lawrence, and where he is now.

"I like to play with words" – Dan Abnett on 2000 AD, Warhammer, and more

Marney the Fox is the next collection from The Treasury of British Comics imprint and on this week's podcast we take a trip into the countryside with artist John Stokes. Appearing in Buster weekly from June 1974 to September 1976, this Watership Down-style tale followed a lone fox cub’s desperate struggle to survive in a dangerous world.

Written by the late Scott Goodall, the series was lavishly illustrated by Stokes, whose remarkable career has seen him go from uncredited work on British children's weekly comics to inking Grant Morrison's The Invisibles. His story is one of changing times and a changing industry, but throughout his work has retained its old school charm and solid workmanship. In this episode, John talks about his childhood amidst the riots in pre-partition India to living on a houseboat to his parallel career creating sets for theatrical productions.
