The first full-length collaboration between Burning Pyre and Canadian Rifles, “The Snipe & The Clam” encapsulates a shared sensibility and vision. Initially seen together on the Vienna Press/Vaagner compilation “A Declaration” in 2019, which was followed up with a second piece last year on Burning Pyre’s Opal Tapes debut, “United Angels”, the two artists cultivate a unique aural world with a singular voice.

Taking a contemporary yet deeply romantic approach to ambient music, “The Snipe & The Clam” showcases a blend of luscious synth melodies and harmonics, set against a heavily organic dynamic backbone. An apt representation of both artists’ methods and modus operandi, opulent glimmering drones flow with a sense of narrative, contributing a magical watercolour-like quality to the album’s eight instrumental pieces. As if lightness met the restraint of a disciplined wrist - every sharp note a pensive flap of wings across its airy background.

“The Snipe & The Clam” often feels like an emotional exercise on the stoppage of time, gliding between loving gestures and precise crescendos, delivering both a flourish of exposition and a reflection on intimate moments. A definitive summit in each respective artists’ discographies until this point, “The Snipe & The Clam” is an elegy to tenderness and finding beauty in minute details.

In the future, our civilisation is detectable as a sediment layer of aluminium. The instruments this music was made on, the speakers it was played on, and the club it was played in will all be the same matter, and the humans that listened to it a layer of carbon beneath."

The first release of the year on katharsis is the album “wandering” by danish artist sortlegeme. As the titles of the tracks reveal, the album takes the listener through different dreamlike sceneries with a eerie sense of anxiety as the common denominator. With jjjacob on the mastering and artwork of the album, sortlegeme’s album “wandering” sends the listener on a suspenseful trip of ambivalent melancholy.

The artist, who has earlier released tapes on labels like Moral Defeat and Perfect Aesthetics with styles ranging from tribal techno to noisy ambient, takes an even more filmic approach on wandering by interpreting the ghostly atmospheres and strange feelings he experienced throughout the pandemic year.

The incorporation of rhythms from genres usually foreign to him like hip-hop and jungle suits the artist’s narrative style and brings very vivid pictures the mind of the listener - stretching from the paranoia and psychotic mood on the track “climbing” to the dramatic chase-scene of “pursuit”. His more ambient style is present in the uncanny intro and outro tracks “turn” and “return”, but also on the gloomy yet picturesque track “shrinking”, which was premiered with the pre-order of the album.
