Confrontational - A Dance Of Shadows

I proudly present to you my Best of 2015 Synthwave/Retrowave/Darkwave/Whateverwave Playlist. 4 hours of delicious synthy delights that will tickle your face/fancy/butt/whatever.

WARNING: this is a long writeup. Feel free to skip and just start listening.

In 2015 I went down many musical rabbit holes, some pleasurable/successful, others a big waste of time. The sounds of Synthwave have been around for years, but it was only last year that I began to really appreciate it as its own genre and started exploring ancillary content much like I have before with heavy metal and hip hop. Holy shit, am I so glad I did! I rarely make “best of” lists, but it felt so wrong not to do this one.

Assembling this was incredibly hard; I spent tons of time and energy tinkering with the ordering, pulling in/dropping tracks, relistening, but damn it was fun and rewarding.

Give this a listen, tell me what you like, what you didn’t, what I missed, but most importantly I hope you enjoy it; I made this list for myself but mainly to spread some joy to friends and to share my love of good fun music with others.

This could have easily been 40 hours instead of 4. On that note I purposely omitted some of my favorite artists’ tracks with the hope that 1), you will like the ones I did include and will seek out the others (note on that later), and 2) I can hopefully expose you to some of the lesser-known but certainly as-awesome artists in the scene.

A note on the ordering: tracks are certainly not put 100% in a sequential listening order, but if you choose to listen from start to finish, it should flow nicely. The music gets progressively heavier/darker from start to finish. That being said, just shuffling the list should also produce a nice result. You can’t go wrong either way. Generally speaking, the songs are grouped into three general categories:

Part 1: “Classic” Synthwave: Starting off with Timecop1983 (album of the year) I have the shall I say, smooth, upbeat, positive, make-you-smile-and-puts-a-skip-in-your-step more or less classic synthwave tracks. These are the sexiest tracks. Good for the beach or daydreaming or day drinking. Here, Duett and Timecop1983s entire albums could have been included. They were seriously that good so check them out on their own.

Part 2: Drive-wave: starting at around Robert Parker's jamming “Rebel Heart”, we begin to have liftoff; the tracks have a notable uptick in tempo, become more danceable, sounding more Drive-inspired, more sci-fi/robotic. Get in your spaceship, grab some champagne, grab a lady/dude (or both), turn the volume up to maximum overdrive. Here you get the incredible back-to-back “Hardware Passion”/”Accelerated” back-to-back combo, two of my favorite songs of the year that deserve to be listened to one after the other.

Part 3: Darkwave: Finally, starting at Gost’s “Without a Trace”, things get dark, intense, brooding, downright evil. Here I have put all the dark, loud/abrasive stuff, the scary stuff. Some inspired by John Carpenter/80’s horror movie soundtracks. More dystopian themes, and Satan. Can serve as straight-up party/dance music or a good soundtrack for grave robbing. This section could have been nothing but Carpenter Brut/Dan Terminus/Gost but that would have been too easy. I end the playlist on Gost’s “Master”, in my opinion the heaviest/hardest/dirtiest Synthwave track of the year (that I have heard).

Some last final notes:

* Most all of these artists have their stuff for sale on bandcamp; please support some of these artists if you can! A lot have great vinyl, and oh my god the merch/shirts are awesome with all the crazy imagery
* Shout out to NewRetroWave, great site/lots of inspiration and worth keeping up with if you want to follow the whole movement
* All my own opinions obviously, I’m no expert so please don’t be butthurt if I omitted something or incorrectly categorized a song
