DESNA joins for DifferentSound Podcast #117.

DESNA is from the United States, she is making her mark in the industry throwing controversial parties and producing futuristic techno. Talk about establishing a brand identity outside of the ‘status quo', or redefining what it means to be a true artist, which is exactly what we can expect from DESNA as she carves out her place in the music industry, making sure to avoid definitive classification by charting a new course that's sure to shake things up. Having spent years honing her talents and nurturing her craft, it was only in 2017 that the alias ‘DESNA’ was born. Making a name for herself playing a number of shows on the underground circuit, she eventually caught the attention of the owners of Output club in New York. From that encounter she managed to bag herself a residency where she continued to top the bill between 2017, until the end of 2019, rising in notoriety on the New York scene. She later went on to bolster her profile and kick things up a notch in 2019 by moving to Avant Gardner and Brooklyn Mirage, sharing the bill with some of the biggest names out there. Noted as one of DJ Mag's emerging acts to watch at the end of 2019, DESNA art transcends music; it embodies a way of living, which in turn makes her force to be reckoned with as she channels this passion into everything she does. With a slew of releases behind her, she notched over a million streams in 2020 and landed in Beatport’s top 20 chart. DESNA uses deep, uncompromising techno as her base, with her productions drawing inspiration from a  vast range across the electronic spectrum. Internationally she’s gone on to play a plethora of shows on the underground circuit, including EDC Mexico and most notably in Tbilisi Georgia where she’s cultivated a solid fanbase playing shows at GEM festival and Freedom music, each time bringing the same infectious energy she’s come to be known for. DESNA's deejaying prowess through production and track selection can be defined as striking yet neutral, with a clear vision that’s easily recognisable. Her knowledge and passion for electronic music runs deep, with authenticity playing a key role in who she looks up to and is influenced by. Drawing inspiration from fellow producers such as Len Faki, Ben Klock, and Radio Slave, as well as live acts that include the likes of The Prodigy, Daft Punk, and The Chemical Brothers, for DESNA her music and performances are fully intertwined. It is this mentality that is paving the way for her upcoming projects in 2021 as she looks to fuse her love of art and music into one truly captivating and memorable experience that extends far beyond the DJ booth, it’s the start of big things to come for the Brooklyn native.

Ranging from deep and dubby to bass-heavy and bumpy,  Pugilist‘s musical creations have been picked up by such labels as Whities, Zam Zam and Modern Hypnosis in recent years, but it’s his brilliant new three-tracker on DJ Oberman’s Nous’klaer Audio that really caught our attention.

With that in mind, we reached out to see if he would be interested in laying down a mix for us. The result is a chuggy, bass-driven and highly percussive journey through all things dub, slo-mo techno and broken beat, with almost forty tracks crammed into the one hour and thirty-six-minute long recording – many of which unreleased. This week's Global Vibe Radio guest is Portuguese producer, DJ and @hayescollective Co-Founder Temudo, who also boasts releases on @Soma, Modularz, Mord, Clergy, Planet Rhythm and more.

His 2020 started with Unnecessary EP, which was released on Soma and received immediate success as one of the most sold Techno records in the year so far. Behind decks, you can expect the same dedication he puts in studio, with his energetic and eclectic 3 deck sets.

This week's Global Vibe Radio mix brings new musical formulas, as Spanish producer, DJ and live act Leiras digs through his interpretation of the classical sound of techno. 

Always committed to the music and with the ability to smoothly transmit the different levels of intensity, with a tireless study of the diversity of rhythms and the different genres within dance music, Leiras has grown to be one to keep an eye on in the international techno scene. 

Born in the north of Spain, he came across clubs like ‘La Real’ and ‘El Jardin’ in early 2000. Two clubs important to the history of techno music within Spain, and more so, also important to Leiras musical background, as they influenced him and his artistic career in a fundamental way.

Being the mind behind Ownlife, a record label focusing on the most visceral, hypnotical and sometimes experimental techno music, he created a home mainly for his own productions, but also a space with the freedom to express his own particular vision of dance music. With this in mind, Ownlife is also a platform to showcase Leiras favorites producers at the time.

As a DJ he is influenced by different styles in electronica, which clearly shows at the time when he propounds his own sound from the DJ booth. He always establishes a bridge in between the past – the purity of the first works of pioneer techno producers, and the future – visible in the advanced character of the vanguardist productions of different artists these days. 

This compromise with the continuous music digging, the one created in the past by authentic visionaries, is what inspired him to create the sublabel “SELD” based on one single concept; to perpetuate the legacy of some of techno’s pioneers, and bringing back the attention to music that keeps the pure character and commitment it was created with.
 
During the past years, Leiras work has brought him to clubs all over the world, from Europe to Asia and all the way to South America, playing at respected clubs and festivals.
