A Sonic Love Letter for the UNSEEN: In Collab With For The Healthy Hoes UNSEEN Merch Collection

Once upon a time, V.I.V.E.K Sharda was unhappy with the sound at UK nightclubs and parties—sound that he felt couldn't capture the deepest, truest vibrations of the music he wanted to play and hear—so he just made his own sound system. (Naturally, he called it System.) That should give you an idea of how seriously Sharda takes his wubs and his sub-bass, and if you have even a passing interest in UK sound system culture or dub's crossover with dance music—including, yes, dubstep—then you've probably heard of V.I.V.E.K, or at least heard one of his chest-rattling records.

Along with producers like Om Unit and Kryptic Minds—both of whom feature in the mix below—Sharda has never been one for following trends or concerned about scenes. Instead, he's fully devoted to the pulse of dub and the luxury of bassweight. He's put out slow but steady stream of ultra-heavy releases on his own labels System Music and VIVEK, and now he's on a mission to change perceptions of what 140 BPM music can sound like. That's what you'll hear on his RA Podcast, a meditative and occasionally tectonically-shifting mix that highlights dubstep, dub and its many offshoots—not just staggered drums and subterranean low-end but smooth swing and soulful melodies, too.

We are pleased to introduce our new single coming out on 16th of February featuring ever productive Guiding Star Orchestra from Denmark and young, upcoming, Jamaican roots artist Azizzi Romeo on “In Jah Sight” riddim. Coming out on both vinyl and as a high quality digital release. The song contains conscious lyrics on top of a meditating steppas riddim with beautiful arrangements from GSO horn section and include an amazing dub version made by the great Roberto Sanchez from A-Lone Ark Music Studio. Two wicked collaboration on both sides of heavy slab of 7” record!
Song is an uplifting statement about putting trust in your faith. “When thirst cover your mouth, Jah will send the Rain!” A strong message from a young Artist who’s ready to take over the world of conscious roots reggae music. This is the first time Orchestra is doing a collaboration with a vocalist and we have many more collaborations planned for the future as well as some brand new solo material coming this year. MAGA BO - ARCHIPELAGOES 

A crunk cosmopolitan, Rio de Janeiro’s MAGA BO bumps more hot street-side beats than anybody we we’ve ever met. He’s played everywhere from Zanzibar to Sri Lanka to Capetown, trading ideas and sonics with musicians along the way. 

After dropping the CD mixtape, Confusion of Tongues and 2 12" vinyl EPs on DJ /rupture's Soot Records, as well as tracks on WordSound, Nanny Tango/MELT 2000 and Tru-Thoughts, Maga Bo has completed his first full length record entitled ARCHIPELAGOES, to be released on Soot in April 2008. 

Archipelagos is a collection of exclusive Maga Bo productions in collaboration with Senegalese hiphop godfathers Pee Froiss, new school Moroccan rap heroes Bigg and K-Libre, ragga dancehall champion Teba from Cape Town, Zanzibari taarab master Mohammed issa Matona and others. 

When the freelance sound engineer works outside of his Brazil home-base, Maga Bo stays for weeks at a time: voicing dubplates, recording musicians, doing things like skills exchange and workshops (i.e. teaching young African hiphoppers how to rock pirated audio software...) Call it what you want – creating community, deconstructing the exotic, making collaborations in a fair and respectful way – the music speaks for itself.

All songs produced and mixed by Maga Bo. Recorded in Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Portugal and Zanzibar.

Some background history on this track title, straight from Dubkasm:
If you lived or spent time in St Pauls back then you know what you'd go and pick up at Black Door!
 This is one of the most evocative tracks of the LP for us as it conjures up a particular feeling and atmosphere. Walking through St Pauls towards a session and hearing the rumble of the bass from a distance, getting closer feeling the excitement and hearing the searing echoes and sirens coming into focus. That dark, dread atmosphere is something that will always stay with us. When we listened to Jah Shaka’s Commandments series, that’s what came into your mind - those sessions and the intense vibe. The first sound of muted guitar and Dub Judah’s growling bass takes us right back to that teenage era and those feelings.
