Crunchy beats and bouncy basses – no doubt, this is electronic dance music. But the extensive way in which classical instruments are deployed on Acker number 23 cant be described as a simple sampling play any more. Rather a fiery mixture of rhythmic electronic thrust and the thrilling atmosphere of handmade music is created. &gt;Solo Para Mi&lt; is based on a functional yet driving groove on which a wind player arrangement unfolds, progressively escalating to ever new atmospheric peaks. Mollono.Bass takes up the summery-warm tone colours of the original in his remix but keeps it a little more dreamy and subliminal. &gt;Bulgarian Chicks&lt; is stronger orientated towards the electronic elements but still also here there are instrumental and vocal entries which lend to this title a very unconventional gipsy style. Finally another remix on &gt;Solo Para Mi&lt; by Eule:nhaupt and Molle:nhauer puts emphasis on the song-orientated components of the original, taking its hybrid character even further.

Chris James is based in Birmingham, England and has over the last few years built a sterling reputation as both a DJ, producer and label owner. Playing at key venues such as Ministry of Sound, Turnmills, Empire and Monastery he has also travelled the globe guesting in Ibiza and Australia. His records have been released by labels such as Potty Mouth, Anabatic and Artform as well as on his own much-touted Dubnoir music imprint.
 
This latest release sees Chris deliver the superb ‘Kind of Heavy’, a delightful slice of deep house that fuses a bumping old school bassline, rich melodic parts and heavily effected soulful female vocals to create a timeless record. The original version is followed by a remix from OFF Recordings head honcho Andre Crom who delivers a mix that retains all the character of the original whilst bringing his own style to bear. To close the package the excellent Dale Howard takes the reigns and turns in a mix of ‘Kind of Heavy’ that takes things down a 90’s garage/house influenced route with it’s shuffling drum programming, percussive organ riff and high strings, quality stuff.
