Freerange welcomes Italian producer/DJ/label boss Enzo Elia for his debut on the label entitled The Lost Guitar Tapes.  Enzo is someone who has been releasing consistently great music for many years, although often hidden behind a myriad of pseudonyms and underground imprints. For starters he’s responsible for a mysterious yet established and very excellent edits label as well as being a member of Balearic Gabba Sound System alongside Bjorn Torske amongst others.  Following the philosophy of this collective, Enzo is also producing lovingly and respectfully created re-edits of long lost techno and house tracks as well as many new tunes for influential labels including Golf Channel and Compost.

But for now we turn to The Lost Guitar Tapes and specifically the original mix of Drifting which opens up the release with a brilliant tension builder.  A rolling bassline, crisp minimal drums and a subtly Middle Eastern-influenced melodic line give just a hint of mysticism to this jewel of a track.

For the remix we have none other than the Tel Aviv via Berlin producer
Moscoman, fresh from his brilliant debut LP on ESP Institute and releases on Eskimo and his own Disco Halal label.  Moscoman’s organic, percussion-heavy sound and Middle Eastern roots make him the perfect choice to take on Drifting and we couldn’t have wished for a better outcome.  He manages to inject his own identity to the track with newly recorded live guitar and bass parts and taking in elements of techno, new wave and house, he’s created a sublime piece of dancefloor drama.

Finally we have an alternate Dub version which lays down a firmer four on the floor, extra percussion and dubby stabs for a more driving atmospheric club tool.

The mysterious Toronto based Las Von makes his debut appearance with Aethereal's 68th release featuring two edits of title track 'Trappist' and trance gem 'Disarray' in this provocative offering.

Beginning with the 'Intro Mix', Las Von creates a lavish soundscape that magically builds from a retro laden collage of oscillating synthesizer sounds and sequenced bells to a bright and compelling percussive explosion... if only to drift off for just a bit to set the stage for a hefty kick drum to tackle the bassline in an intertwining commencement of progressive glory. The playful tussle between the kick and bass are catapulted into overdrive as the entire piece melds together as swift arpeggiated leads and sultry pads are folded into the mix, all the while the inviting lure of the original theme from the beginning rises to full effect, thus transporting this stalwart and emotional tune to its stoic ending.

The 'Original Mix' starts with the familiar nostalgic mood of the 'Intro Mix', employing the crooning vintage synth parts and the ethereal lead motifs which frolic about in the background. And as expected, a staunch rhythm quickly engages, dropping the foundation for the delightfully haunting pads, ghostly leads, and searing bassline to take flight. Happily, this mix progresses intelligently, revealing an energetic passion of sonic achievement, skillfully luring the listener into an introspective and deep listening experience. 

Finally, 'Disarray' promptly stomps into the sonic landscape as an energetic exercise of enthralling beats, stabbing bass and captivating sequences that coalesce into a melodic powerhouse of a tune. Las Von's driving bassline is showcased in the finale as the rhythm subtly trails off leaving only the bass and key synth elements to close the track out in a fulfilling finish.

Subconsciousness, imagination and dreams are recurrent themes the duo Pandhora questions through their creations. Their latest EP, 'Imaginary Crossroads' is no exception as it explores the thin line between dreams and reality, and how they interact through memories. This 3-track mind travel ventures through colorful soundscapes. Featuring hypnotic guitar riffs, psychedelic synth melodies and powerful bass lines, it yet has a sensitive and authentic approach to it. It is also a special release as it marks a new path the duo wishes to follow: freeing themselves from the conventions while shaping a more progressive and club-oriented sound.

Opening the EP, 'Reveries' has been the closing track of Pandhora's 'Deep Psychedelia' Live Act since 2018. To create its emotional impact, it relies on euphoric guitar licks, a deep growling bass line, and evolving organic textures. As every mind quest starts with thoughts wandering around, `Reveries' aims at portraying how these loose thoughts can shift consciousness smoothly. A means of transport into an imaginary world, slipping away from cold reality towards bright and comforting surreal horizons.

The following track 'Memories' is uplifting, dreamy and filled with silky sounds and soothing melodies. It features the vocalisations of jazz singer Sanguinello who has been a long time collaborator of the French duo. In contrary to dreams, memories are rooted in reality. They are some sort of photographed experiences the mind enjoys to replay, mostly in order to recreate emotions from the past. Through this piece, the duo aims to unfold that rush of adrenaline one can feel within a joyful souvenir.

With its singular format 'Castle In The Sky' closes this EP with grace and style. Its abstract composition illustrates the merging of these two states of mind, when dreams and memories blend to create a deep feeling of calmness and uplifting melancholia. On a more personal note, the track is also a tribute to Mobi, a lovely golden retriever who briefly shared Pandhora's daily life and abruptly passed away in 2019.
