POWLA are a 4-piece band from Wollongong and an eclectic fusion of punk, psychedelic and rock.  Inspired by alt-Australian bands like Pond and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, POWLA is a genre-defying experience with unexpected vocals and unforgettable transitions.  

Their 4-track debut EP 'Jurassic Mantra' is raw and rough entrance into the Wollongong and Sydney music scene.

Starting out as the bedroom brainchild of lead singer James Barreto, the Gainesville duo are getting ready to release their newest album Keeper of the Dawn. Taking cues from contemporaries like Temples and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, new single “This Is The Time” finds the duo in a magical haze. Washed-out drums and fuzz pedals do the trick, but the ringing reverb on Barreto’s rhythm guitar really gives the song shape.” Spin Magazine

And here is where it begins to feel like an absolute fools errand to try to define the sound of “Keeper of the Dawn.” Ancient River are so dialed-in to their individual current at this moment – a current strengthened, without question, by the duo’s relentless touring – that the entire album becomes more than a sum of its parts, just as the dawn can be felt each morning as something more than our moon momentarily disappearing from view. Don’t mistake the simplicity presented on “Keeper of the Dawn” for a lack of depth – these songs sound a mile wide and just as deep. Ancient River has turned over time to also be much more than the sum of its parts, and on “Keeper of the Dawn,” to simply be Ancient River. The album is a keeper in a thousand different ways.
