Born: 6 November 1971 in Queens, NYC, USA.

Joey Beltram is widely acknowledged as a leading innovator in the early development of underground dance music.

Joey began DJing as a hobby back in 1983 at the age of 13 playing mostly early electro and hip-hop. He made the switch to house music in 1985 when the first wave of Chicago house hit NYC that same year.

In 1989 he started releasing some of his early productions on several small New York record labels whilst he was working as a courier. A year later he caught the eye of R & S Records in Belgium and by mid 1990 released his first major record with that company titled "Energy Flash". Beltram soon followed with some equally impressive releases.
All through the 90's he has created some of the most timeless music on some of the most cutting edge labels of the decade.

Here's an exemple of what working is about - it's not perfect, it's not polished, but mistakes are beautiful in my opinion

We only appreciate life through its imperfections after all, because if it was perfect the whole way, we wouldn't notice it's perfect

Anyway, the first 30 sec. are about Hardcore Techno while the rest of the mix is a bit slower - i had issues while recording in the middle of the mix that broke up the mood i was into

This is what my training sessions sounds like, the blending can be sometimes raw but the tracklist is good anyway -underground Techno & Acid only- and the progression as well - a strong and nice build up like I love to do, this is what matter the most imo

➡️ Why do I play vinyl records?

1. I love the raw sound of it and the minimalist way of playing that it needs. I appreciate having no screen while playing. I don’t want perfection, I want the audience to hear that human touch and to feel that there’s life behind the decks

2. Sometimes after listening to the copy I bought from Discogs, another track appears better that the one I bought it for - The listening and understanding of the music gets deeper on vinyl

3. There is a form of freedom in keeping in touch with matter. It's very important to me


➡️ Why do I mostly play music produced in the early 90s?

1. Since I discovered Techno music in 2011 this is the [timeless] sound I've always wanted to listen to in clubs/parties with no chance for it

2. It's also about playing what has a sense to me, what has a story to tell about our world in a more 'spiritual' way. The Techno of the 90s tells us a story, among other things, the story of a youth facing globalisation and the violence of contemporary society

3. I think being closed to the past is as sterile as being closed to the future

4. This music [made with early drum machines] is also interesting for the reason that the instruments [kicks, claps, hats…] are not exactly in time when programed on a drum pattern. This is almost inaudible but there are imperfections in the fitting of the different instruments that creates THE groove. A computer cannot do that. Techno entirely made on computer doesn’t interests me because it’s too perfect, there’s no wildness in it and as it is written above - I don’t want perfection, perfection is boring
