We discovered Joe’s work through the “.jpeg Bushfire Relief” charity compilation released on his inimitable .jpeg Artefacts label back in 2020 and never looked back. The release, as well as the general label curation, exudes uninhibited talent and diversity and this is true for Joe’s own productions too. His blend of jazzy acoustic passages with hazy, oozing electronics, spoken word and field recordings make for incredibly immersive and emotional listening experiences 🫧

Joe’s introspective mix is taking us on a voyage through all his various influences by bringing together electro-acoustic downtempo experiments, jazzed-up electronica and tingly, softly bubbling glitch ambient. All with a sprinkle of gentle euphoria, tender melancholy and just pure bliss ✨

Today's guest mix arrives as the perfect soundtrack to these scorching summer days that seem to stretch on endlessly, capturing the vibrant energy and laid-back vibe of the season. We welcome Vakula, a leading figure in the Ukrainian electronic music scene.

The journey began in 1998, behind the decks of a local radio station, where Vakula played drum & bass and trip-hop sets for a handful of night listeners. By 2004, he was already diving into the deep waters of dub techno, drawn not by fashion, but by a persistent inner frequency.
Soon after, Vakula moved to the capital — a city now at war — where he spent eleven formative years. The original plan was simple: earn enough money to reach a Buddhist monastery in Tibet. But life, borders, and timing had other ideas. Instead, he stayed and followed sound.
Over the years, Vakula became part of the underground scene, eventually becoming a resident at iconic clubs such as Propaganda and Zeppelin, while also playing in many of the legendary venues of that era. By 2008, music had turned into a passport, taking him across continents to places where electronic sound truly thrived.
Genre was never a boundary. Jazz, rock, hip-hop, ambient, house, techno, drum & bass — everything served the same purpose: to explore, to feel, to connect. In 2011, he returned to his small hometown and built an analog studio, carving out space to listen more deeply.
Over time, the surface of the global scene began to feel thinner, less sacred. In 2020, he stepped back from performance and immersed himself in a three-year exploration of shamanic practices — not for spectacle, but for personal insight. This inner work changed his relationship with sound, and opened up new levels of depth, stillness, and presence in his music.
By 2025, Vakula let go of the path of the spirits, realizing that some stories are not his to walk. Vakula returned, not to where he started, but to a clearer understanding of his role: to keep listening, to keep creating, and to stay honest in sound.
Through it all, Vakula remains one of the early pioneers and enduring voices in the Ukrainian electronic scene — not the mainstream one, but a world of his own: where forest replaces the city center, where meadows stand in for mindless entertainment, and where trees are steadier than fleeting friendships. His connection to Ukraine has never been about slogans. It’s a quiet, unwavering love — for the land, for the people who still feel, and for his hometown of Konotop, which lives in every frequency he shapes.

Red Richards - Kyoto's Angel

Music at it´s core enables us to drift throughout different landscapes constructed out of waveforms, like a UFO exploring the inner workings of the cosmos. Some artists have such a diverse array of work that their musical expeditions are considerably more complex, and tell a tale of many different bizarre and extraordinary planets. James Clements, also known as ASC, is such an artist. With a back catalogue of work that stretches 20 years and a variety of genres, it is safe to say he has established himself firmly within the music community. Through heading a number of his own labels such as Grey Area and Auxiliary, he has successfully explored the relationship between ambient, techno, and drum and bass inspired material like few artists have before. James is also well known for his work with the endlessly dubby Silent Season imprint, and has recently released records on ARTS and the new Horo label to much acclaim as well. For this edition of UNRUSH we catch up with him to see what musical paths he has been following recently, and find out what has lead him in these enticing new directions.

“When I first began my Imaginary Softwoods project in 2007, I had imagined different combinations of spaces that could be translated into sounds. This method of indoor (or in-mind) travel had been learned from my instances of combining mind-altering chemicals with sounds. In my early years, I would argue with myself to the point where whatever I was seeing was completely transformed or altered into something that was definitely what was in what I call "Consensus Based Reality", or the reality that occurs at lower vibration frequencies. Over the years I've trained myself to manifest entire environments - places, rooms, worlds, all triggerable by a single sound or mood. I can see the square footage of a space, the colors. I can smell the smells, decipher different wood types, past, present and future life energies and everything that encompasses the gauzy infinity of rainbowed aether. My favorite aspect of this is that I have no say in what it is I am manifesting, and whatever appears just appears. I am blessed by these experiences, I take none of them for granted and everything contained in these scenes are gifts. A recurring theme from my earliest visions is a Bronze Lamp. I will spare you the details of how great it looks, but something worth noting is that the lightbulb on it is actually burnt out and needs replacing. Anyhow, I modeled this particular set of music for No Way Back after my experiences with this lamp and the energy it gives me. Some of the tracks appeared as studio versions on my "So Extra Bronze Lamp" digital EP a few months later, while a good portion of this performance is exclusive to No Way Back set (and will remain as such). 2020 has been a year no one alive will ever forget, and as many went into lockdown mode I had an opportunity to develop these visions and present them as part of an absolutely incredible livestream event, and now here again for your enjoyment.”
