The Foghorn Project EP [CYH32]

Following up from 2017’s “Tribute To Eddie EP”, a tribute to the late great Eddie Kendricks of The Temptations, Lorca returns with the “Tribute To Larry” EP on a similar tip.

Larry Levan was known for his decade long stint as resident at the legendary Paradise Garage in New York during the 80s. He has since become known as the prototype for modern dance music DJs. His sets were well known for ushering in an electronic, post-disco sound that presaged the ascendance of house music.

It is this sound and era that influences the music of this EP. Taking inspiration from tracks Larry would regularly play in his sets, Lorca brings them in to the now, bringing new life to 2 classic disco/motown cuts that would regularly send the dance floor into a frenzy.

“Larry’s Bomb” takes chops from Dee Dee Bridgewater’s fervent “Bad For Me” taking key elements from an epic 8 minute builder and making them work in a classic four to the floor format. “Look What You Do” follows in a similar fashion but this time loops the belting vocal intro of a Barber Holloway classic under rolling kicks, claps, live guitar and cowbells.

With his second full EP on Will Saul's Aus Music label, Damiano von Erckert rings in a housey summer with a partly imaginated vision of opened clubs and a reality that mostly belies these expectations. However, DvE's latest three tracker Pete is meant to be for the floors – as the artist himself visualized this surrounding when producing the tracks – and is dedicated to all those people filling the latter with joy and happiness. The EP's title track Pete is an uplifting almost mental or cosmic House take, which has a tremendous and intriguing groove which is later on in the track even more supported by a vocal that it has the momentum on its side. After his remix for Cinthie's City Lights, Pete (maybe a shout out to Mr. Tong?) itself musically follows in the steps of the artist's contribution Hideaway to the Live At Robert Johnson compilation Lifesaver Vol. 4, which was out at the end of last year – just with a slightly more dreamy and summer-ish note and probably Damiano's gift to a clear blue sky.

If you know Dervaig is actually a small village in Scotland you begin to understand why the opening track of Sigward’s Balmung Beam EP sounds a bit eerie and dark. Long, long ago the Vikings came ashore at Dervaig (the word means ‘small inlet’ in Norwegian) but in the winter of 2019 Dutch producer Sigward uses it as a passage way to lead us into his new record.

Balmung Beam is Sjoerd Sigward’s second EP for SoHaSo, the follow up for the well received Black Mambo-single from 2014. In the meantime Sjoerd moved from Holland to Germany, where he now resides in Berlin. This step has provided him with a cinemascope view on dance music, as his new EP clearly illustrates.

Italo-esk flavors on the title track, meditative pulses on the beautiful Woodland Wells Inc and spacious Andy Stott-like tension on Jettison. DL/MS take Balmung Bean to new wave territories on their slumbering arpeggio-driven remix. You might just stick around in this small inlet.
