The saying good things come to those who wait has never been truer that the brand new Paper Cut EP which is out this week via @freerangerecords. Indeed it's been 15 years since the EP collaborators @shurikan and @miltonjackson last teamed up to release on Freerange.

Paper Cut captures the essence of both producers, it's deep, lush, jazzy in places, electronic yet soulful and packed with club know-how.

To celebrate the release we have a full interview incoming later this week with UK deep house don Shur-I-Kan. The next label to feature in the SB guest mix series requires little to no introduction. Minted 25 years ago by high school friends, Jamie 'Jimpster' Odell and Tom Roberts, and having amassed a mighty 412 releases (listed on discogs anyway) we welcome Freerange Records to the fold. 

With a discography as deep as the music therein, Freerange member, Conrad Lee has elected to "dig through the lesser explored corners of the back-catalogue, picking out tracks that still feel relevant today and pairing them with some, but not all, of my favourite releases from my time from starting as an intern up until now. So expect tracks from Jimpster, Shur-i-kan, Crackazat, Ewan Jansen and Ron Trent among others."

As the title suggests it's another love letter to one of my favourite labels of all time, Strictly Rhythm. This time it's a little bit trackier than before with a few more hidden gems and also a few you might know again. There's some jacking from Sneak, some vocals from Mone and some wild pitch from DJ Pierre. In fact there's a couple of longer tracks to get lost in to at the end as was the Wild Pitch way back in the 90's. It also meant I could be a bit lazy, play less tracks and rest my old bones. Win win!

@rhythmrobot is the alias of Chicago producer Ryan Gilhooley, specializing in the styles of Acid, Techno and Deep House. Making tracks since the early 2000s under the name "Hardware," Ryan took a break between 2009-2015 to focus on his marketing career. For therapeutic reasons, he started producing tracks again in 2015 as rhythmrobot. In 2016, Ante Recordings put out his first label release, "Drum Hop," followed by Owen Ni aka Pan!k, who put out his second EP,  "Chapdr3" on Run on Recordings. Since then, Owen and Ryan have teamed up on a number of projects. Together, they have released music on Ante Recordings, Snail Juice Records, Bang Le Dex, Run on Trax and AcidWorx. 

The highlight of rhythmrobot's music career came when Posthuman played his track "Urges" at I Love Acid in October 2020. In early 2021, rhythmrobot collaborated with Owen Ni on the "Crate Diggin'/Rung" EP. "Rung" was picked up by multiple Spotify editorial playlists which allowed their music to be heard in 138 different countries that year. To date, rhythmrobot's music has been remixed by dyLAB, Owen Ni/Pan!k, Raytek, Master Master, Yokushe, JAK, Distortion Inc., Pat Foosheen and Mark Ryal.
