This week, we're excited to present a synth-laden, 80s-inspired mix by special guest @simfossil:

“The theme of this mix is a certain new age sound and flavor from 80s recordings. I traced this sound through the work of many Japanese artists (hence the Shibas on the cover) and I would say this became the backbone of the mix: music by the legendary Haruomi Hosono, Yuji Toriyama and many more. The vibe is unique and experimental, a new age-y, jazz-rock-y type of deal. I’ve been quite inspired for a long time by the character and creativity of this era; something about the guitar and instrumentation gives it that special touch. Personally, as a producer, I’m a big fan of Yamaha instruments, in particular the DX7, which I’ve come to associate with this time in music. Though Japanese artists are the central thread, I’ve made a kind of fusion of many different things that to me capture this special flavor.”

To rust, being an old swing, lonely standing in a deserted courtyard on the outskirts of the city.

To lie down, having turned out to be the empty beer bottle, forgotten on the shore of a muddy lake.

To buzz, becoming a 50-cc engine of a scooter rushing through the Veshnyaki district at three in the morning.

To rejoice, having turned Tijani Babangida, who scored the single goal into the gates of the hated Danes on a hot June evening in 1998.

All those little moments should be experienced to the rhythms of the languid house mix of Phil Anker, our buddy from Brooklyn, that he put together for the 5/8: radio.

Serafima tightly squeezed the hand of Leonid Borisovich. It almost instantly became wet either from the August heat, or from the excitement of the moment. Looking at the pond, which reflected a twelve-story panel building called the "candle" by the locals, she asked: "Lenya, would you also want all of this to last forever?".

At first Leonid Borisovich wanted to nod as a sign of agreement, but then he remembered everything that he could not really accept the finiteness of: like a trip to the nudist beach "Little Banana" on the island of Skiathos which was full of surprises, or the promising career of Stefan Bellof, which was ended with a crash into a concrete wall in Belgium, but above all of this – the mix of Istanbul rhythm-caster Ali Riza Firat, created for 5/8: radio.

Tonya was twelve years old. On the small screen of the «Toshiba» color TV were corrugated potato chip floating in zero gravity, news anchor Ken Brockman went nuts and welcoming a race of giant ants to Earth, and a drunken Barney Gumble flew off on a jetpack stolen from NASA with a bottle of champagne in his hand. Glasses clinked in the kitchen. Father received a prepayment and brought Turkish sweets with marmalade inside. Mother opened a bottle of champagne and thickly painted her lips with the lipstick bought in Bulgaria last summer. Outside the window, in the dim light of the loneliest street lamp, there were falling large flakes of January’s snow.

Tonya somehow felt surprisingly good, but she had no idea that she would feel just as good only after 23 years, when she decided to turn on the Safronel mix for the 5/8: a radio, inspired by the «Deep Space Homer» episode, in which Homer Simpson goes to space.

Radio Sofa sets its Méridienne on the roof of the Point Ephémère for a summer radio residency. In this transitory studio, oriented towards non-dancing phonic universes, we will receive guests and residents for exploratory sessions to be listened to sitting down.

La Méridienne intends to mix zenithal light and sonic poetry for a few afternoons. The selections of our guests will be open to public and broadcast live on our airwaves from the rooftop. Lovers of haunting atmospheres and voluptuous rhythms, La Méridienne opens on the 3d of July.

Mikhail Alexandrovich opened his eyes with an effort. During the night his apartment became so cold that his face felt like a heavy ice mask. The smell of rain and rotting leaves wafted into the bedroom from the open window.

Everything inside Mikhail Alexandrovich crumpled because of the mere thought that he would have to get out of bed in all this September nightmare. He imagined his cold hands, puddle-stained boots, a terribly prickly sweater, and smoking breaks under the drizzle. It was too much.

The only thing that gave Mikhail Alexandrovich strength to finally pull his shaking pale body out from the blanket was not the prospect of being under boiling water in the shower, not a cup of hot instant coffee, and not even a trip to Tunisian Sousse bought for October. It was the 200th anniversary mix from 5/8: radio, recorded by Sasha Shuliko, warming like the July sun
