Mark Broom's Hardgroove Mix Part Three

For this week’s DETECT, we welcome Manchester’s very own GFA (@djgfa01).

The Belfast born artist has quickly implemented themselves as a stalwart of the North West’s thriving techno landscape, slotting in comfortably on many a line-up in the city, whilst also being a constant, reassuring presence on the other side of the decks. Playing alongside a multitude of internationally-recognised artists, he has more than held his own in those situations, and earmarked himself as one to watch. An artist residency with the Northern capital’s infamous Tiribä collective & event series and a stand out international debut in Tbilisi has further reinforced his exciting future.

Known for his animated and versatile sets, GFA uses an array of sub-genres to explore different emotions, held together with the foundation of techno - expect the unexpected. 

For this DETECT, GFA has emphasised a peak time level of intensity, whilst also drawing upon all the different tastes and influences that form his current musical identity.

Born in a discreet warehouse in San Francisco, Online Narcotics is a duo consisting of DJs/Producers Trauma Unit and Zero Idea. Blending various flavors of techno, Online Narcotics creates dynamic sets ranging from hypnotic and driving to hardgroove and tribal, keeping dance floors on their toes. Known for their unique playing style, namely that both DJs mix simultaneously, it is common for three or four tracks to be playing at once, synthesizing complex rhythms. Online Narcotics is part of the Vitamin 1000 Energy Crew, and have supported acts such as Charlotte de Witte, Fjaak, and Dax J, among others. Together the duo organizes the event series DOMAIN, showcasing underground techno talent from around the globe.

6AM Guest Mix: Online Narcotics

With Ukrainian roots growing up in Berlin, Chontane started playing in his city’s clubs at the mere age of 19. Starting things off with a residency at the Krach nights in Humboldthain and now having played for some of the most prestigious clubs such as Basement, KALT, Tresor, Radion & BRET in Amsterdam, Blitz, Fuse club in Brussels, and RSO in Berlin, Chontane can be increasingly found blurring the lines between techno, breaks, and electro in cities around the word.

Part of the new wave of producers more invested in sound design and razorsharp productions than ever before, Chontane’s early studies in music and sound design allow for surgical precision; his fascination for sound in general can be heard in his records. He gives body to his work and has been pulling together tribal and groovy techniques inspired by the classic 90s and early 2000s club records to create density and effect on the dancefloor. His work stands at a stylistic crossroads between various dance genres, easily slipping into just about anyone’s track list if their goal is to get people moving.

Since his debut release in 2018, Chontane has garnered praise and support, leaving a lasting impact on the industry. Notably, he has released two highly anticipated records on ARTS Records, showcasing his versatility and talent. Additionally, he launched his own label, TANE, and recently released a second EP on the rapidly rising label, Mutual Rytm, associated with Shadow & Obscure Shape.

With his roots grown deep in the world’s techno capital, Chontane’s career is well on its way to becoming international, having joined the Paramount roster this year. Ready to push boundaries and surprise music enthusiasts with unexpected blends to fire off his erratic taste in music, Chontane’s mixes and productions represent today’s necessity for the perfect balance between consistent innovation and guaranteed efficiency

This week on FMB Mixtape Series, we’re happy to welcome the vinyl-only DJ & music producer, Tarkno, hailing from Australia. As always, we first caught up to find out more about the mix & what he’s been up to lately…

I am currently getting ready to head back on tour in Europe and play some exciting events. This means a lot of packing, organizing and planning has been taking place.

The mix was actually recorded back in my home studio, in Melbourne, Australia during my holiday break. This gave me access to my entire record collection, so I made sure to select some hidden gems that hadn’t made their way into my bag yet. 

The idea for this mix was to play strictly old school tools from my personal collection. All of the records resonate deeply with me, embodying the true sound of underground techno. While the mix has a consistent theme I made sure to include a few staple tracks that I have enjoyed playing out recently.
