Entry to Beat Battle BB86 - Retro Synthwave by Paid Basset.
This challenge was about time for us all to go retro-futuristic!
Paid Basset wanted us to bring the sound of the '80s into the future, for all the fan of neon sunsets, dreamy synths, and driving beats.
We had to create an original Synthwave track not longer than 4 minutes using at least 2 samples from the provided sample pack.
The track should capture the essence of synthwave: heavy synths, retro drums, and nostalgic vibes BUT with a modern twist.
We could add our own instruments, synths, and effects, but the samples from the pack should be prominently used in the production!

This week’s @disquiet project has been very useful. I’d been meaning for months to teach myself how to create scores in Sibelius. For this exercise I exported MIDI from a composition called “Group Manifestation” (which I originally started in Logic) and imported it into Sibelius to produce a score for an open-call submission to the Contemporary Music for All collection. An unexpected benefit was that I could go back into Logic and audition how the parts fit together. That playback helped me refine the performance instructions for the piece.

4 Post-apocalyptic Minimalist drones

We are continuing our collaborative relationship [Metalogue & Fluff] with 'Tephra', a brand new track featuring prominently on Metalogue's upcoming album 'Anomaly' (Combat Recordings). 

This time, we've pushed the boundaries quite a bit and experimented much more with concept and abstraction - something already hinted at, but never pursued to such an extent in our previous album 'Slate Horizons' (2018).

Relentless percussion and manic vocalisations contrast with ethereal voices and a mesmerising piano modulation based around the recurring melodic theme of the album.

Partly inspired by a freak volcanic winter event in 1816, 'Tephra' ties in with the overall album theme - a fascination with sci-fi and mysterious 'zones' - and plays with the juxtaposition of disaster and chaos vs. stillness, ruins, and the long forgotten.

As with all tracks on 'Anomaly', Metalogue recombined elements of 'Tephra' into the other album tracks, whilst mangled excerpts of 'Tephra' also resurface in Monster X’s cataclysmic 'Anomaly' remix.

'Anomaly' is available now for digital pre-order, and members of Metalogue’s mailing list will receive a free download code for the entire album a few days before official release in February 2020.
