The world can be an enchanted and formidable place when you’re a kid. Although poets, composers and novelists have tried to capture the weirdness of childhood for centuries, it’s territory that few dance music producers ever explore. But that’s a trend that Sanoi is comprehensively bucking on his latest single, ‘Castle on the Hill’.

Sanoi (also known as Jonas Fisher) is a Berlin producer who currently calls New Zealand home. During his last two years in Aotearoa, the young producer has spent his time cooking up festival ammunition for labels like Traum, Bar 25 and Beat & Path. While his previous discography has followed a theme of desert enlightenment (calling to mind artists like Acid Pauli and Bedouin), Sanoi’s latest release for Beat & Path takes a more introspective route.

‘Castle On The Hill’ (the first single from Sanoi’s upcoming self-titled album) is underpinned by long Moog-style bass tones. At the same time, shimmering highs and halting, broken piano chords call to mind a young Jonas Fisher’s daydreams, evoking wispy, palatial images. Both these elements combine to create the unusual and powerful sensation of dancing your way through the artist’s autobiography, an effect that he’ll go on to explore at length in the upcoming album.

On the B-side, Switzerland’s Kellerkind has chosen to accentuate every hint of grandeur in Jonas’ original piece, heating up the kick drum, increasing the bassline’s mischief factor by 40%, and carving out plenty of space to let the main elements ring out. There’s also a new sense of urgency in the track’s shuffling shakers and low-end motion. All of this makes for a decidedly dance-oriented track, with a chunkiness that will appeal to fans of Systematic Records.

‘A Moment in Time'  the innocence of Sanoi’s younger self has all but evaporated, and we’re in a new territory of breakbeats, sinister acid lines and weighty chord progressions. The track might call to mind your first experience standing alone in a big club full of sweating strangers and earth-quaking beats. As thrilling as it is, coming of age can be a daunting experience.

By the sixth track (‘Asmodi’), the strands of the narrative are starting to come together. In the Avestan language, Asmodi is the demon of wrath, and you can hear Sanoi battling that demon in the twists and oscillations of the saw wave bassline. And even as they fight, there’s a sense that the protagonist is discovering a way to tame this demon. As he gains his balance, flickers of innocent joy start to show themselves again; piano hammers and crisp pitched percussion cast sunlight over the battle scene."

Sanoi’s new self-titled album is a bildungsroman in deep house form, tracing the artist’s growth and fall from innocence, his confrontation with reality and eventual reconciliation with the vastness of the universe. 
 
This isn’t Sanoi’s first venture on Beat & Path. In 2019, the Berliner released a low, chugging EP through this label, a glowing debut entitled ‘Drive’. Then late last year, he followed up with a Jodorowsky-channelling festival anthem, ‘Walk’ (in collaboration with Jake Rattler). But where these releases were playa weapons, Sanoi’s newest enterprise is an autobiographical concept album, taking us into a more vulnerable part of the artist’s mind. And unlike many concept albums, this one is consistently danceable.

Right from the start, there’s a fine balance of soul searching and bottom-end sway. ‘When I Was A Little Boy’ (track one) opens with the sounds of children playing, while organic percussion quietly swings its way into the frame and leads us into a subtle, nostalgic deep house number. The low frequencies are growling but restrained, while the high end is celestial, bringing Sanoi’s fellow Berlin-resident Powel to mind. In psychedelic states, life-scenes will sometimes project themselves onto a backdrop of patterned visual motifs. In a similar way, Sanoi projects childhood scenes onto the constant four-four of the beat here, and the result is hallucinogenic and personal.

Sanoi - When I Was A Little Boy [Beat & Path]

Berlin-based storyteller Powel has spoiled us.

He delivers four completely unique records, each knocking through the speakers with fierce percussion, and melodies that glide and fly, carrying the listener off to somewhere else. On each cut, he exhibits his mastery of joyful keys and exquisite drum programming, never missing the opportunity to craft delicious, exciting grooves that are sure to ring out around clubs worldwide.

The title track, RAD, shares the same name as the 1986 film, which inspired the EP, and it takes us on a progressive journey, with beautiful synth pads and subtle vocal manipulations layered over a strong, knocking drum beat that builds in intensity as the track progresses.

Not content with stopping there, Powel cuts in and out with stunning synth lines and a snare drum that instantly makes your head bounce — a statement of intent for the quality of music that is to follow on this EP.

The project's second song, Out Of Fashion, instantly catches the listener's attention with a stiff, marching beat, eerie stabs and a manipulated vocal sample that swings around the drums. But quickly, the vocoder melts into a gorgeous, pulsating synth line that is urgently propelled along by the percussion towards its crescendo.

Then we're transported deep into Powel's mind for the third cut, where he treats us to a gorgeous slice of melodic goodness on Wine & Cigarettes. It is good-natured and has an old-school groove that grips you and promises to never let go.

And suddenly, just like that, we reach Ode To A Carrot, which takes the form of a euphoric dream, set in a warehouse party in the 90s. Powel serves us a fat, squelchy bassline that is unlike anything else we have heard from him before.

Meshed with wavy pads and a pounding kick drum to create a funky dancefloor anthem, this acts as the perfect closer for a body of work that speaks volumes about a producer who seems incapable of producing mediocre music.

As if that wasn't already enough, the EP is complete with a remix package featuring Haider Uppal and Timo Chinala, Mark Slee, Lauren Ritter, and Brigade. Again, each remix takes the original track in a completely unexpected direction, delighting the listener and highlighting every moment of joy from Powel's original creations.

SANOI is a musical magician hailing from Germany.
Jonas was bitten by the electronica bug at a wholesome age of fourteen and after studying music it was not long before the hedonism and creativity of Berlin came calling.
Plunging through techno genres his thirst for fresh brought him to N.Z in 2015 and has been impressing ever since.
Constantly developing as an artist and finding expression through music are some of the key factors that drive him, whether it be in the studio or behind the decks. Jonas's Love for all things electronic shines through.
Sanoi has used the last year to bring all his skills to the table, Playing major festivals, putting the name Sanoi on everybody's lips with his meticulous club sets...providing the soundtracks to peoples lives with his in clubs and festivals and unleashing his well honed production skills on labels like Bar 25, Beat & Path, A Tribe Called Kotori and Zehn Records.
Sanois productions are Groove laden, organic,melodic, mischevious, and fun. The type of music crowds want to hear and Djs want to play.
