this mix is the first of eight that have been used in a clinical setting by SABI Mind for over three years now. it has also been used by close friends and myself, many times over too ..over and over, as it was carefully designed for repeat use. to entrain to. to reach for as a reliable tool. for the purposes of meditation, clearing, unwinding, calming, relaxing, deepening, inner explorations & journeys, grounding, centering, focusing, resting, drifting, quieting, sleeping, transforming, transporting, healing and other related purposes.

it stands on it's own as a contemporary ambient mix and also fully functions in the sound wellness realms. it keeps the promise of holding space for the listener the entire time, without any blips or trips or artful overly expressive side-quests, just slowly and reliably modulating and evolving and unfolding.

it's called classic abstractions because, it being the first mix in the series, we start at the beginning and honour the foundations and feelings of classic ambient music ..as we also abstract from them (staying present in the now, not just in the past). many thanks and acknowledgements to the absolutely perfectly executed music made by all the artist's in the mix - a decent handful of them being local as well.

Son Of Chi: I always make live sketches. This time for my performance in Athens (scroll down for more info). Not sure if I will stick to them, but they give the right impression of the atmosphere i would like to create. The opening words by Kain The Poet reflect the times we live in and the challenges we are facing. I will end with a piece from “The Fifth World Recordings”.  

According to the Hopi prophecies we are now living in the transition years, moving from the fourth world into the fifth world. As they say: “times of earthquakes, floodings, fires, pandemics and wars”. The Hopi believe that in this period you need to be careful where you stay, who you stay with and what you do. Keep practising the holy rituals. Respect nature, the earth, the universe and be good to your fellowmen and all living creatures.

As the Hopi say the fifth world  “represents a spiritual awakening, an evolution in understanding the interconnectedness of all beings and the universe”. We are in the middle of this transition. All we can do is stick to our rituals.

Or as Hazrat Inayat Khan says: “The further we advance, the more difficult and the more important becomes our part in the symphony of life. The more conscious we are of this responsibility, the more efficient we become in accomplishing our task”.

Recorded on a farm in Rotterdam (Kralingseweg 393). Released on limited cassette in 1987 (100, sold out). Solo recordings by Hanyo van Oosterom (Chi Factory, Son Of Chi) on 4-track cassette (Tascam 234 Syncaset). Originally recorded as sketches for a new CHI album.

All instruments by Hanyo van Oosterom: Roland Juno 60, Ensoniq Mirage sampler, Roland SVC-350 vocoder, damped piano, bells, bass, guitar, bamboo flutes, percussion, field recordings. 

Original final mix by Jurgen Brouwer. Remastered and remixed by Hanyo van Oosterom in 2025. All rights reserved. 

Inspired by the novel 'By The Body Of The Earth' by Satprem. A book of the voyage of the soul, which others call reincarnation, a perpetual story which unfolds itself in three cycles or three lives, three islands which are situated in "this land here or any other", apparently in India, Egypt and the frozen lakes of Norway. 

The main charcter - Nil - always in quest of "something else". A new state upon earth for man, free from mechanism and the laws of the mind, who had cast away all for this, given up the world for that of a mendicant Sannyasin. 

After a long and sometimes hard journey he finally discovers a vaster, cosmic consciousness and new perceptions, but finally he realises that he had perhaps gained the freedom of the heights, but lost the earth.
