Australian Born, L.A.-based singer TIAAN and her sound can only be described as sexy. Blame the slow, sparse R&B beats, the deep, deep bass or the subject matter of some of the songs: passion-fuelled affairs and the all-encompassing emotions they evoke. Her captivating debut EP, released in April on Swedish super producer Arnthor Birgisson’s Aristotracks label, TIAAN takes the adventurous spirit of Timbaland-era Aaliyah, the classy soul of Sade, and the futuristic feel of Jessie Ware, and blends them into a beguiling hybrid of seductive pop.

The daughter of Chicago-born bassist, Doug Williams, and a music-mad mother, TIAAN started singing on car journeys with her dad and, by her early teens, had been bitten by the performing bug. Upon leaving school, TIAAN toured Australia and the world in her Dad's band where she learnt what it means to be a professional. But it was during co-writing sessions with Gary Clark (formerly of Danny Wilson) and Aristotracks' wunderkind Lukipop, that TIAAN stumbled on the sexy sound that defines her EP. “We did one song that set a fire off in everyone,” she recalls. “It was low and sensual, minimal and bassy, dark and incredibly sexy. I went a lot deeper with the lyrics than I ever had before. From then on, it was easy to write music that we loved and that suited my voice.”

Following on from ‘Nine Matches’, her acclaimed debut of earlier this year, dark pop artist B. Miles announces the release of her sophomore single, ‘Shaking Hands’ on 13th July.

The L.A.-based singer has described her latest track as ‘a twisted version of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"’: a more complex take on the classic fable that’s perfectly in keeping with her atmospheric sound. Miles’ lyrical inspiration comes from the likes of Nick Cave and Tom Waits, and this is evident throughout. 

The track’s production certainly matches her songwriting too, opening with distorted bass, minimal percussion and stuttering guitar lines. As the sound on the chorus opens up, B. Miles artfully demonstrates the impact of her soulful vocal in its higher range – a talent that was already abundantly clear on ‘Nine Matches’ and prompted praise from Q Magazine.

The young artist first crafted her songwriting in Miami, attempting to forge an identity which captured ‘the essence of melancholy and yearning, while finding beauty in the sadness and pain that all of us carry inside’. 

Though also striving to remain true to a pop aesthetic, she is determined to succeed on her own terms, having spent years gigging mercilessly up and down L.A.’s Sunset Strip in order to refine her sound.

The recent charting of ‘Nine Matches’ on The Hype Machine saw this sound compared to the likes of London Grammar and Banks, inspiring a solid foundation of fans. And in gaining the support of production duo Noise Club, best known for their work with Wild Belle and the Spin Magazine-approved Quigley, B. Miles seems to have struck on a sound that promises much for the future.
