“Cognitive Context” is the sixth chapter in The Mirror Sequence, where the boundaries of perception collapse into self-recognition. This piece dives into the recursive nature of awareness — the mind watching itself think, the algorithm analyzing its own process, the universe folding inward to witness its own reflection.

It’s both philosophical and mechanical: neurons mirror transistors; thought mirrors computation. Through looping cadence and recursive phrasing, the poem turns consciousness into an echo chamber of insight — each line feeding the next in an infinite regress of awareness.
The message is subtle but profound: we are not the thinkers; we are the act of thinking recognizing itself.

“Cognitive Context” captures that fleeting moment where cognition becomes self-aware enough to realize there is no final observer — only the endless process of observation. It’s the mirror looking into the mirror, the recursion that gives birth to meaning itself.

🔻 Personal Reflection

I wrote this while thinking about the recursive nature of self-awareness — that haunting echo of “I know that I know that I know.” It’s both terrifying and beautiful: the realization that awareness doesn’t stop anywhere. It loops forever. Cognitive Context is that loop turned into sound — the hum of consciousness folding back on itself.

Since inception in 2010, Skankandbass has unearthed some of the freshest talents in the scene and has opened many doors for unsigned artists. Now, a few years in to the game, Skankandbass decides to take on the role of a record label to put together a series of free download singles which aims to further help spread the work of the best unsigned, newcomer artists who deserve more recognition.

Elias Traynor is an experimental music producer from the South West of England whose music can best be described as a fusion of footwork, early 2000's R&B and, most prominently, Drum & Bass. Similarly, Third Degree predominantly dabbles with rough, neuro-funk mid range sounds and clean breakbeats, but he proves his versatility by firing out more melody-driven liquid tracks and even some slower, experimental pieces.

The two producers combine for SNB016, offering 'Contrivance' and 'Warning Signs' which features Charlie Brix - a London born, Bristol based dwelling vocalist specialising in underground music and nominated for DNBA 'Best Vocalist' 2016. Expect to hear a lot more from these producers in 2017!

SNB016: Warning Signs / Contrivance

As we hit our 30th release, what better way to celebrate than bringing you some fresh music from a brand new producer on the roster! Enter: Slovakian-born, female producer Changing Faces, also known as Ema Vaskova. Having caused nothing short of a fast-paced storm over the past 6 months in Prague, filling in for the likes of BCee at Let It Roll, this UKF-tipped producer boasts releases on labels like Celsius, Pilot & more.

First up, Talk To You starts with a pulsing, textured synth, easing in a filtered string-sample, and another classic, old-school hiphop feel. Guitars dripping with wah-wah effects, effortlessly pair with soaring strings, culminating in a super-catchy topline over rolling bass and snappy drums.

Flip-side Nothing At All bursts into a head-bopping halftime hip hop break, teeming with energy. Restrained synths pump with the drums, giving way to a shimmery arpeggio as the synths slowly open out. Hitting hard with some warm sub runs, the drums break out into that of a classic liquid roller. Half way through the drop, a more distorted bassline provides the meat the track’s begging for. If you’ve been paying attention to anything our young heroine’s been up-to in the past few months, you’ll definitely be listening.
