Second Chance Beer Co is celebrating their 8th anniversary and Brewmaster Paul Segura, Marty & Danielle kicked off the celebration with Beer for Breakfast on 91X.  First up: Suns Out Buns Out. This 5.5% ABV summer ale is lightly dry hopped and uses Chinook, Cryo Cascade, & Cryo Citra hops. Next the Beer for Breakfast crew sampled Dawg Daze 8th Anniversary West Coast IPA, a collaboration with Artifex Brewing. Dawg Daze comes in at 6% ABV utilizing Citra, Mosaic, & Strata hops and is available in both tasting rooms (Carmel Mountain & North Park) on draft and in cans.

How I Remember It - September 11th, 2023

The 91X Beer for Breakfast crew are celebrating Oktoberfest this week. Oktoberfest officially kicks off this weekend in Munich AND San Diego. Societe Brewing is celebrating Oktoberfest today (Saturday) so Brewmaster Paul Segura thought it was the perfect time to enjoy their Fest Bier Oktoberfest Lager (4.6% ABV). Fest Bier is crisp and clean with floral & mineral notes, plus a touch of lemony citrus zest. They then compared the Fest Bier to Karl Strauss Brewing’s Oktoberfest Marzen Lager. KS Oktoberfest (5% ABV) has a darker color and has a maltier taste from the Vienna and Munich malts.

Brewmaster Paul Segura brought in one of San Diego’s OG breweries on Beer for Breakfast this week: Coronado Brewing Co.
They start things off with NADO (4.5% ABV), a Japanese-style lager brewed with jasmine and toasted flaked rice. NADO Japanese Lager has an upfront bitterness that fades into a light grain and rounds out with a dry, subtle finish. They then move onto Big Weekend Double IPA (8.9%ABV). This double IPA features a variety of hops like Mosaic, Citra, and Simcoe for a burst of sweet pineapple and grapefruit flavors to establish a bright tropical bitterness.

How I Remember It - September 26th, 2023

Brewmaster Paul Segura & Danielle from 91X traveled to Denver for the Great American Beer Festival and shared some winners with Marty this week on Beer for Breakfast. San Diego breweries brought home 18 medals from the largest beer competition in the United States. 
They start things off with Belching Beaver’s Tropical Terps IPA that won Gold in the Experimental India Pale Ale category. This 6.6% ABV IPA has all the 420 flavors without the effects and has a unique, fruity, & tropical taste. They then move on to Modern Times Mega Devil’s Teeth: Double Dutch S’mores Edition that won Silver in Dessert Stout or Pastry Stout category. Coming in at 14.4% ABV, this Imperial Stout is aged in Bourbon Barrel with vanilla, coco nibs, & vegan Stroopwafels. 
Congratulations to all of the San Diego breweries who brought home medals!

Beer for Breakfast: Great American Beer Festival

It’s the freshest season of the year: Wet Hop Season! Brewmaster Paul Segura brought in a couple wet hop beers from Nickel Beer Company in Julian for Marty and Danielle to sample.
Overnight to Julian (6.7% ABV) is brewed with fresh picked Cascade and Chinook hops from Chico, CA and is then dry hopped with wet hop steam distilled oil. My Way Wet Hop IPA (6.4% ABV) is brewed with fresh picked Strata hops from Oregon and has tropical flavors. 
Wet Hop Fest is coming back to Obriens Pub October 13 – 15 and will feature countless wet hop beers from Nickel Beer Co & other well-known breweries on tap.

A special guest joined Marty & Danielle on 91X Beer for Breakfast: Jeff Lozano from Ballast Point Brewing! Jeff sat in for Brewmaster Paul Segura this week to fill them in on the Ballast Point Brewing Little Italy 10th Anniversary party happening Saturday, October 14. 
To celebrate the milestone Ballast Point Brewing invited BP AlumniBrewers who have moved on to other breweries in San Diego to collaborate on small batch beers for the anniversary including Colby Chandler (Former VP of Specialty Brewing), Nathan Stephens (Eppig Brewing), Aaron Justus (East Village Brewing), and more. 
Jeff brought in a couple of beers that will be featured at the anniversary including Hop Soda Brute Session India Pale Lager (5.4% ABV) & Barometer Drop Baltic Porter (8.5% ABV) for Marty and Danielle to get an early taste of.

Beer for Breakfast: Ballast Point Brewing - Little Italy

Brewmaster Paul Segura brought in a couple tasty brews from Original 40 Brewing for Marty & Danielle to try on this week 91X Beer for Breakfast. They start with Fresh Hop Special Lager, a collaboration with Viewpoint Brewing in Del Mar and Seek Brewing in North Park. Coming in at 5.8% ABV, this special lager has loads of fresh picked Centennial from Crosby Hop Farms in Oregon and showcases the bright and fresh aroma of the Centennial hops that you would normally get in an IPA. 
They finish things off with Small Worlds West Coast IPA. Small Worlds (7% ABV) is full of flavor and utilizes Mosaic, Strata, and El Dorado hops.

Beer for Breakfast - Original 40 Brewing

It’s the final Beer for Breakfast for Danielle on 91X so they ended with a banger: Pizza Port Brewing. They kick things off with Bressi Ranch 10th Anniversary NZ Hoppy Lager. This 5% ABV lager is hopped with Nelson, Mosaic, and Phantasm. They also enjoyed Finding Paradise IPA. This new seasonal IPA comes in at 7% ABV and utilizes Citra, Nelson, El Dorado, and Centennial hops.
