Recorded live from Fusion Festival 2023 | Räuber*innenhöhle | Fr. 30.06. 02-04 AM 💖

TL;DR: After years of going to Fusion as a raver, I was super excited to finally have the chance to play there thanks to the @menschmeier_berlin team, who are curating a part of the lineup of the infamous and beloved Räuber*innenhöhle floor. But I was also anxious before the festival because the gig happened at one of the most challenging times in my life — mental-health-wise. However, I pushed through and the warm welcome of the whole festival team and to see literally all of my friends who were at the Festival in the crowd, dancing, smiling and shouting, gave me the bestestest feeling. 💖  

After the gig, I unplugged my recorder without saving the file.🤦‍♂️ Luckily I found a hack online that allowed me to restore 2/3 of the set — the rest will remain saved on our internal hard drives. While restoring the data, I manually had to insert the lost half of the first and last track of the recording, so I let my perfectionism take over and cut out a ruined transition in the recording ☠️🤝 So here’s to about 90 minutes of 140 BPM+ groovers between driving dub, hard groove, and Detroit techno. 🍉

We have great groovy remixes by italian powerhouse Hertz Collision, OFF / GRID from Hamburg who had a meteoric rise the last few months and is still hot from his Planet Rhythm debut a few weeks back, Berlins Black Mirror Park is on point as usual and had great releases lately as well on '...is serving' or KONFLKT and label boss Ackermann turns in a floaty old school dub techno 'loose fit' edit.

I’ve been DJing for about 9 years now. Mostly vinyl, sometimes digital, always techno, sometimes with an acidic and/or dubbed out twist. I’ve played at clubs and parties like ://about.blank, Arena Club, Mensch Meier, Rote Flora (Hamburg), Institut für Zukunft (Leipzig), Sa Terza Metra Festival (Sardinia) etc. and with my collective called Sonntagsinstitut we’ve been hosting parties in some of the above mentioned locations, doing festival bookings and we also have our own monthly radio show. One thing that’s always been important to me as well as our collective is to take the political dimensions of nightlife into account and support struggles against discrimination. In my humble opinion, these efforts have been a part of techno music & culture ever since. With our collective, we’ve hosted a variety of solidarity events in support of political groups fighting against racism, antisemitism and gentrification. We always have a diverse booking with at least as many non-male artists as there are men on our lineup and we always have a political block with interviews in our radio show.

Regarding my music production: Some time after starting to DJ, I also started to produce my own tracks and have been doing it almost every day since. I have quite a variety of sounds I make when I produce, from tool techno to dreamy stuff. But generally speaking, I’m a big fan of the classic techno instrumentation with Roland Drums & stabby, dubbed out synths and/or uplifting pads. 

At the moment, I work with an analogue TB-303 clone by acidlab, an Arturia Microfreak, a TR-8, an MC-505, a Korg Volca Beats plus a few other little gear pieces, my own field recordings and foley sounds recorded with my Zoom H4N, and an extensive library of plugins in Ableton Live Suite 10.

Black Mirror Park is a DJ, producer, and live act based in Berlin. With over a decade of experience, he has been a key figure in several cultural and musical collectives in the city. His productions have landed on labels like Planet Rhythm, Different Sound, and KONFLKT, while his performances have taken him to some of Europe’s most respected techno venues, including Fusion Festival’s Turmbühne, Grelle Forelle in Vienna, Tresor Berlin, and Leipzig’s Institut für Zukunft. His collaborative live project with O/Y has seen the duo perform at Sisyphos’ 16th Birthday, a self-curated two-floor event at Südpol Hamburg, and a tour of Switzerland in 2024.

This mix takes a step back from high-intensity layering, instead reconnecting with his musical roots and adapting them to a modern, uptempo setting. Introspective sounds, melodic elements, and a touch of eeriness come together in a mix that allows each track to breathe and stand on its own.

BCCO Mix Series 529: Black Mirror Park

The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere a new track Myles Sergé. "Shoplifter (Black Mirror Park Deep Mix)" comes off the new release of the same name forthcoming on the artist's signature imprint. Hailing from Michigan, USA, vinyl and digital techno label (MS) is the creation of Myles Sergé, and it usually focuses on his own original works, but has also featured quality music from artists such as Gonzalo MD, Philippe Petit and Rennie Foster.

Now the label boss has put together a new remix package for the recently released track "Shoplifter," and his back catalogue includes appearances on labels like Zenker Brothers' Ilian Tape, Dan Curtin's Metamorphic, Dense & Pika's Kneaded Pains, and Esther Duijn's Another Earth, to name only a few. The original "Shoplifter" is a stripped-back and jackin' cut with a tool-like style and immersive, hypnotic style that's totally club ready. 

Rouding off the remixes, Berlin's Black Mirror Park is a member of Sonntagsinstitut Collective, and lists works on Robert Hoff's trau-ma, dotwav's KONFLKT, Planet Rhythm, and DifferentSound. His remix closes out the release with a twisted and hypnotic rework that uses suspense and dubby tones to a create a contemporary piece with depth and soul intertwined to perfection.

Here's a short livecut of my closing set at Sonntagsinstitut's [wyst] party at Humboldthain Club. The first track of this recording was the last track of the previous set that night, played by the great Anja Zaube back to back with Caleb Esc.

Here's a live cut of the Saturday Night peaktime set I played single-handedly (literally. ha ha.) at Mensch Meier's Mein Floor at the Pommes mit Eis Festival. 

Equipment: CDJs 2000, Technics 1210, Allen&Heath x:one 92, Zoom h4n Recorder. Digital & Vinyl in the mix. I don't sync so.

BMP 015 - One Handed [Livecut Mensch Meier 26. 08. 2017]

Polyvinylchlorid (PVC)is a synthetic plastic polymer. It was first used for record pressing in the second world war when the US Army dropped the so-called "Victory-Disc" records from their airforce planes so that the ground forces would have some motivational music to listen to whilst fighting against the nazis. 

In 1948, Vinyl records became available in the entire US and three years later, the first Vinyl LP hit the German market. For the following decades, Vinyl records were the primary medium for music enthusiasts and the upcoming scene of disc jockeys and turntablists until the CD ended the height-flight of the "black gold". 

Nowadays, record sales are on the rise again. While some might consider collecting Vinyl an odd anachronism in the digital age, others claim that the medium has- to quote Ostgut's infamous resident Steffi - "warmth that its digital counterparts lack". The only thing certain in this discussion meandering between analogical nostalgia and cultural optimism is the following: Vinyl records are certainly fun to play with. And nothing else matters.
