Sympathies’ name references a body of work made during a debauched steamy summertime studio session many years ago - once a true sentimental touchstone of identity, and now a long-surpassed, beautifully, blissfully outclassed memory, a pleasant smile in the existential rear-view, a warm breeze in the gale of history. 

Sympathies is a blur of emotions, experiences, sensations, relationships, and the psychedelic fragments between, given meaning through sound waves and motion, through riotous adventures, bright lights, and the unexpected plot twists that shape life.

As a relentless creative tinkerer and underground grand-stander, they have come up in DC’s scene as a prolific, multivariate producer, genre-bending DJ, and underground event organizer. Seeking Brighter immediately ticks up the urgency, but without undue alarm. Pointillistic arpeggios play counter to hazy, woozy see-sawing sequences in a curious, exploratory, and perpetually enticing way, pulling the listener along as mental soundscapes and physical soundwaves rise and fall. Epiphanies in Dreams’ similar irregular teetering arpeggiation is coupled with blurred, winding, ephemeral slipperiness - it’s the sonic texture of the specifics slipping through the fingers of comprehension and memory upon waking from particularly tumbling, tossing, and turning dream-states.

Furtive is a full-gonzo polychromatic rave conjurer and a relentless creative tinkerer. A Philadelphia-based producer, DJ, and DIY underground event organizer with over a decade of experience in the studio, Furtive's production wizardry has allowed them to land releases on a variety of US and overseas labels - including their first vinyl EP in spring 2022, with another coming soon - along with a slew of tracks on VA compilations and dozens of their own self-released cuts. Furtive’s body of work comprises psychedelic warphole-diving techno, quirky and muscular electro, acerbic acid tracks, moving ambient atmospheres, and drum & bass bin-rattlers. Furtive cut their teeth as a DJ and promoter/DIY organizer in Washington, DC’s warehouses, where they also played a turnkey role in putting on some of the District’s zaniest techno parties. They now co-run an intimate off-the-books venue in Philly. As a DJ, they’ve supported internationally celebrated no-nonsense acts and have routinely held court in precious warehouses and dingy local watering holes - always with eclectic selections and a steadfast focus on pacing and dynamics, regularly jumping genres to build moving and impactful sets. Newly minted label Psychic Relief poses up and flexes shamelessly with its inaugural release Muscles Hug Your Bones, a brawny EP of swirling technoid psychedelia, muscular bass-weight, and unabashed sentimentality by Philadelphia-based rave rascal Furtive. 

Bringing things into motion is Convoke, an impellant, rippling track opening with a stalwart kick and shifting, auroric sheets of harmonics. This densely textured wormhole slinker isn’t ostentatious, but its unrelenting progression and deliberate percussive maneuvers will command feet to move, summoning dancefloor supplicants toward pulsing speaker stacks.   

The EP’s title track punches in with a crunchy, energizing bounce - primed to bring packed rooms into full, rocking swing. The immediacy of its peppy, rambunctious groove and rolling, skittering percussion is bound to start frothing things up… and the acid line hasn’t even come in! Once that rippling squelch starts bubbling up, the frenzy of this sweaty, muscular weapon simply has to be felt - it’s a proper belter, while also perfectly arranged for slick and easy playback. Muscles has been play-tested in many packed rooms, and it always does the trick! 

Flipped over to the over side is the crooked drum and bass roller I Always Try To Be This Gentle. Rising out of a gauzy synth sweep come rattling, low-slung bass movements. With precise, tickling percussive hits draped in shifting, foggy textural shrouds, this trippy, higher-tempo track toes the line between enticement and unease with uncanny confidence. 

Closing out the EP is a warmly glowing, meandering, wide-eyed paean to a certain romantic audacity. This is a mix I've sat on for a long time - nearly an entire year! On a hot August day of biking many, many miles, some incidental sweaty hijinks, and after completing work on Sympathies VII earlier in the day, this was recorded during a rampaging late-night mix session at the then still-fledgling Bounce House, Philadelphia. All alone in the sweltering warehouse space, I used the usual dancefloor speakers as overkill booth monitors and romped, recording three mixes in one night, ending with this one. 

This is, in some ways, me operating at my finest, or at least showcasing my best tendencies as a DJ: a wide range of genres, intentional progression in energy and between genres, deliberate selection, seamlessly executed eclectic stunts, a flow-state of three of four decks. It's also special to me because I happened to recreate one such dramatic stunt that I improvised when I had played in NYC earlier in the year for my Mild Fantasy record release party during a particularly emotionally turbulent period of life. The gaping dramatic, emotional moment on the dancefloor shockingly didn't clear the crowd - something that has been instructive for my growth as a DJ. 

This mix is deliberate and methodical in progressing through vibes and genres, beginning with a gentle atmospheric bath and moving into bass and wiggly  material and sunshine-y rollers before settling into a full-tilt 3+ deck techno firestorm and easing back out into some surprises and delights. expect (or don't!) wormhole techno, drum & bass, dubstep, a handful of originals, and even a glint of hyperpop.

Unvanquishable Summer (Furtive // Bounce House, August 2022)

This is a wild, unapologetic, barnstorming ride recorded between 1:00-4:00 on a throbbing dancefloor during the first leg of Nowadays Nonstop on the night of Jan 20. This was a romp of delivering my intentions passionately and precisely, playing many of my favorites, and operating at my very best across genres, traveling through a tunnel of engulfing psychedelic darkness, bass weight, shifting tempos, and beat structures into celebratory light. 

As an artist/DJ, these are some of the moments one lives for. It’s certainly something I’ve dreamed about for years. The opportunity to play in one of the rave’s hallowed halls - one of the most esteemed clubs and my own very favorite - was a dream come true and has been a quiet moment of apotheosis and vindication of years of dedicated, focused work.

About the mix: House music has always struck me as a manifestation of profound, glowing joy and being remarkably human - sometimes in sharp contrast with murkier, shadowy wormhole rave music shrouded in fog and strobe lights - perhaps the dancefloor equivalent of bubbling laughter where other dance music is whispering prayer. It's this quality of warmth that is so exciting and comforting, and allows everyone to groove and celebrate life together, that makes house music familiar and unifying. I wanted to take this energy and sensibility but make it more dreamy, gauzy, atmospheric, and decorated with some twinkling sentimentality - hence dreamier pads, emotive synths, sparkling arpeggios, some trance-adjacent leanings and references. Particularly as the seasons change and we tip over into longer days, brighter light, and the beginning of blooming, I thought to conjure a vernal haze for waking up from cold winds to new, surprising sunrays - music for jostling yourself into big smiles with thoughtful, jubilant company.

Furtive is a full-gonzo polychromatic rave conjurer. A Philadelphia-based producer, DJ, visual artist, and event organizer, Furtive manifests the rave with technoid propulsion and delightfully unexpected whiplash moments of the sentimental and psychedelic. Furtive fosters underground community as a DIY rave organizer, co-running Bounce House - a precious off-the-books venue in Philly.

We're thrilled to have the legend Ron Like Hell guiding us through these emotional eddies. Truly the best of the best, Ron is a musical magician like no other, an unparalleled master of the dancefloor with seemingly boundless energy and boundary-free flow that reaches back decades and stretches forward to the bleeding edge of dance music. We've fallen in love with Ron's sonic sorcery during many truly transformative sets and shared dancefloor moments - all delivered with unparalleled deftness and gentleness - and also with Ron's generous, bubbling personality which extends warm attention and supportive mentorship with a unique graciousness and sincerity. Ron co-runs the legendary Wrecked party - currently in residence at Basement NY - and makes frequent appearances at some of the most esteemed halls and precious holes we couldn't possibly enumerate. In support is Bounce Boss Furtive (whose development as a DJ has in no small part been nudged by the effusive support of Ron, from pandemic-period invitations to The Lot Radio and an appearance at Wrecked's 12th anniversary celebration in spring 2023). This is Furtive's first return to the Bounce House booth in 2024, primed by a recent romping set at Nowadays and more ready than ever to deliver their finest on beloved home turf.

Campout Mix Series: Furtive

Sympathies is a series of self-released EPs by Furtive, showcasing an extensive catalog of production. With his signature understated bravado and studio idiosyncrasies, the DC-based producer reveals seven tracks of tuff drums, cryptic shifting textures, and weird acid on his second personal release. 

The murky, serpentine track Zamenis kicks off the EP with clattering percussion and grinding textures set against a pensive, primordial atmosphere. This driving dancefloor wiggler can be slowed down to effectively add a more hypnotic, trippy mood to a mix.

Void Profusion is a bold, rolling track that pairs a pressurized acid line with veils of mirage-like gossamer pads. This track can serve as a hefty dancefloor cudgel or as cruise control in a dynamic, banging set.

KetAnemone is a scuzzy, slow-burning acid bomb that aptly conveys the stroboscopic propulsion and dissociative warehouse mayhem of powders creeping into the bloodstream 

Sympathies II winds past the bellicose, clanging tones of Soma Vulture, the constricted and gritty synth punctuation of Karada, and Puncture’s malevolent synth stabs and glistening, flickering textures to arrive at Undivided. Opening with a commanding kick and rippling percs, Undivided immediately demands attention, building into a blissful, dreamy haze before slamming right back into a full-tilt acid workout. Too sincere to be over-the-top, Undivided is an exultant, shameless acid anthem. 

Sympathies is named after a series of portraits, experimental photographs, and weird VHS footage incidentally produced together with Furtive’s dear friend Matty during a wild, debauched studio session.

Furtive is a full-gonzo rave conjurer and relentless creative tinkerer, intractably committed to the rave as a Philadelphia-based producer, DJ, underground event organizer, and dancer. A shifting sonic chameleon, Furtive brings a scintillating, sentimental, and psychedelic touch to their artistry, rooted in wormhole-traversing technoid propulsion and dependably delivering riotous, slack-jawed whiplash moments of the delightfully unexpected. Their many polished and focused genre-spanning productions are informed by over thirteen years of experience in the studio, yielding a rich selection of tracks across their self-released discography, vinyl pressings, and contributions to compilations. A veritable product of the contemporary American underground, Furtive cut their teeth as a DJ and DIY event organizer in Washington, DC’s warehouses, where they once played a variety of turnkey roles in putting on some of the District’s more proper techno parties. Furtive co-founded and co-runs Bounce House, an intimate, blossoming off-the-books venue in Philly where they regularly hold court as a resident. Furtive is on broadcast monthly through Ashen Vanity, a radio residency at Philadelphia’s indispensable cultural mainstay Great Circles. As a DJ, Furtive has played hallowed halls (recently rampaging at Nowadays), dingy holes, roaring renegades, broadcast booths, and festivals (The Great Beyond 2023 and 2024, Honcho Campout 2024) - always with eclectic selections and a steadfast focus on pacing and dynamics while regularly jumping genres to build moving and impactful sets, often alongside internationally celebrated, no-nonsense acts. Beyond the fog and speaker stacks, Furtive creates art in a variety of mediums. They're as unapologetic in their sincerity and flair as they are in being a die-hard True Believer in the rave.
