Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Aspiring multi-hyphenate : )

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. I moved to NY in September of 2021. I had started to meet the seedlings of my now friends and budding community when I played here earlier in the summer of 2021 and before that, when I went to Sustain in 2019.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. This mix is:

1/2 the sequel to my beloved Honcho dubstep mix from 2021
1/2 a mix of music I would have shown to my baby stoner self in high school, instead of the carefully curated Majestic Casual-ridden playlists she was dutifully crafting at the time to accompany her equally intricate apple pipes.

This is a wild, unapologetic, barnstorming ride recorded between 1:00-4:00 on a throbbing dancefloor during the first leg of Nowadays Nonstop on the night of Jan 20. This was a romp of delivering my intentions passionately and precisely, playing many of my favorites, and operating at my very best across genres, traveling through a tunnel of engulfing psychedelic darkness, bass weight, shifting tempos, and beat structures into celebratory light. 

As an artist/DJ, these are some of the moments one lives for. It’s certainly something I’ve dreamed about for years. The opportunity to play in one of the rave’s hallowed halls - one of the most esteemed clubs and my own very favorite - was a dream come true and has been a quiet moment of apotheosis and vindication of years of dedicated, focused work. 

There are many nods and treats in this set: tracks shown to me by friends, absolute hypnotizing favorites and gems I’ve held onto, the voice of my true love, and (for those following my lore closely) the magic of opening with Phil Elverum’s work. Tracklist below:

"Space is something I'm really developing in my music," she explains. "Often I get inspired by surroundings," she continues. "When I'm in a certain place, and there's a certain smell or atmosphere, that really inspires me. So sometimes when I make a track, it kind of resembles this moment I had in this specific place."

upsammy (@upsammy) was a resident DJ at Amsterdam's much loved De School nightclub and words like "adventurous" are often used to describe her sets. As electricity blossoms and leaves glisten, upsammy creates interpretative space, cleverly paradoxical in its concurrent comfort and desolation. Known for her keen ear for crystalline melodies and intricate rhythms, her name is Thessa Torsing; she transcends traditional genre boundaries, creating a space where the digital and organic harmonize.

In very loose terms, James K's (@jamesk_1) music operates at the fringes of the pop world. It is experimental and industrial, packed with hooks and riddled with dreamy textures that show off her mastery of synths. She has released it in album form with Dial and Incenso, dropped EPs on AD 93 and collaborated with the likes of Drew McDowall and Stefan Maie, and always manages to imbue her adventurous arrangements with real-world emotions and anxieties. This year she will join us at Dekmantel Festival but not before serving up this week's podcast.

It's the sort of rhythmically thrilling workout that has always stood James apart: jittery drum patterns and kinetic grooves that unfold at 100 miles an hour as a barrage of caustic motifs, hypnagogic melodies and hyper-real colours all bounce about the mix. There is an ever-present sense of tension in the way things are assembled - it's as if they might implode or explode at any minute, and it all sounds fantastically futuristic.

We continue our six week run of weekly SORRYMIXs with an absolute barnstormer set from "singer, seamstress, dj, and party girl" Maenad (@alana_maenad) recorded live from 7am to 10am at @tossdbk in Brooklyn back in July. 

I met Alana on the internet back when she was living in Pittsburgh. We bonded early over Jimmy Buffett, house history, and big vocal dance tracks. She's since relocated to New York City and I've really enjoyed getting to know her and her boyfriend Gabriel ever since. We did a super fun episode of BOYDZONE together on @8-ballradio but I had somehow never seen her DJ for a crowd until this set that just destroyed me it was so good 😊

tossd is a really killer new-ish DIY party run by Will Jack (@willjackthedj) and Perfect Health (@perfecthealth) that has been putting together some super sweet and intentional local focused lineups lately that are a real treat. I was thoroughly impressed by the scope and attention to detail of their party and absolutely blown away by Alana's joyous butt movin powerhouse of a set, paired with great sound, wicked lighting by pal @violet_flux, and a much appreciated padded dancefloor. Furtive is a full-gonzo rave conjurer and relentless creative tinkerer, intractably committed to the rave as a Philadelphia-based producer, DJ, underground event organizer, and dancer. A shifting sonic chameleon, Furtive brings a scintillating, sentimental, and psychedelic touch to their artistry, rooted in wormhole-traversing technoid propulsion and dependably delivering riotous, slack-jawed whiplash moments of the delightfully unexpected. Their many polished and focused genre-spanning productions are informed by over thirteen years of experience in the studio, yielding a rich selection of tracks across their self-released discography, vinyl pressings, and contributions to compilations. A veritable product of the contemporary American underground, Furtive cut their teeth as a DJ and DIY event organizer in Washington, DC’s warehouses, where they once played a variety of turnkey roles in putting on some of the District’s more proper techno parties. As a DJ, Furtive has played hallowed halls (recently rampaging at Nowadays), dingy holes, roaring renegades, broadcast booths, and festivals (The Great Beyond 2023 and 2024, Honcho Campout 2024) - always with eclectic selections and a steadfast focus on pacing and dynamics while regularly jumping genres to build moving and impactful sets, often alongside internationally celebrated, no-nonsense acts. Beyond the fog and speaker stacks, Furtive creates art in a variety of mediums. They're as unapologetic in their sincerity and flair as they are in being a die-hard True Believer in the rave.
