'Myths of East' is the debut EP by Vuta, producer from Belarus. Different cultures, orientalism and ethnic flavors inspire him to develop his own sound. The three tracks that make up the release blend sampled vocals, organic rhythms, and mysterious melodies with references to sounds from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. His music transports us to exotic scenarios of vibrant energy, making it great for smoky dance floors.

After a little hiatus we’re back with another addition to our mix series courtesy of Behrang Mohammadi, who you may remember playing with us at Frappant in late-2019. The Malmö raised and Berlin-based Swedish-Iranian DJ serves you a seamlessly blended cosmic disco selection with a few sprinkles of dissonant weirdness that eventually evolves into faster-paced italo, disco, and synth-pop territory. Be sure to check out Behrang’s label ‘The Transient Nature of the Disco Business’ too. We hope to be able to share a dance floor soon.

Isle of Wax is a Hamburg formed DJ collective consisting of four music lovers Davin, Gilberto, Naama, and Kevin. Active since 2014, the crew explores dance music in all its groovy, quirky, and obscure notions by organising events and parties in some of Hamburg’s venues such as Golden Pudel Club, unearthing and rediscovering musical gems on their Instagram and YouTube channels, and inviting other DJs for their Isle of Wax mix series.

Lucas has delivered us a smooth two and half hour ride that moves through downtempo, street soul, experimental, ambient, electronic, and jazz obscurities pulled from seemingly all corners of the world. We'll definitely be playing this one all summer.

We're changing course from our regular format to release a very special mix by our friend and previous guest @rupert-marnie, label boss of the Hamburg-based imprint @ThePressGroup. Marnie has just released his latest album "Evocative Rhythm Experience" on The Press Group and to celebrate this occasion, he has created an ambient mix using only the tracks from the first record of the double LP. The mix is the perfect companion for relaxation and introspection, and it's the perfect mix to supplement your chill-out sessions. 

To enhance the listening experience, Hamburg-based cinematographer Lars Zimmermann has created a meditative video that perfectly complements the music, which we have premiered on our YouTube channel. The video is compatible with unwinding down after a long night out, having a lazy Sunday afternoon, or just zoning out with some lovely images.

Isle of Wax is honored to present a track off the long-awaited, delicately crafted LP from YS, Brutal Flowers. 

Putting a pigeon amongst the cats we are back with that good shit. An out of step, incidental artefact of peaceful sophistry: YS - Brutal Flower (2 x “12 LP). A no airs and graces piece of cool future-proof ambience. A modern ballad for brave young clubbers, local pubbers, slipstream warriors, and emotional doggers.

The distinctive aesthetic hallmarks of YS are all here: slabs of urban flavour from emotional interior; raw data straight from the interface. ‘Untethered’ and ‘Down’ are chopped-up cuts of searching R’n’B - jaded jams of lustful erasure. On the flipside, blunted desire lingers in ‘Fading
Memory’. Both hopeful and mourning: this is the lay of the land in Brutal Flowers sharing that rare strain of underground synesthesia best located in dark undercurrents of early Mo Wax.

The orchestral ambience of ‘Autumn OST’ is a potent stupor of end credit cinematics. Coming up for air. It feels young in an ancient sort of way: pure as first snow. And from here in the album unfolds with the patience, tranquility and the expansive poise of a work that is for now and always. Pulsating gently to assured ending with ‘Be Together’ - a flickering skyline, swarming with warm memories. In between there’s flashes of heartbreak reminiscent of Beltran's Ten Days of Blue and Blunt’s Stone Island (‘Look Up’ feels like a sort of spiritual successor to ‘Wake up’), that being said, when push comes to shove it only it ever flirts with its own reality.

An aesthetic reflection of a creative process that is delicate and restless. Created in the edges, where long distances, fast cities and global melancholia are wrought large. Burning the midnight oil Berlin-Singapore style: from real to reel. A sentimental exercise of modern faith by old
friends. With a nudge and a wink, Brutal Flowers is a (de)coded map of memories wavering with familiar intrigue. Patient listeners and the already initiated will be rewarded on re-visits - as playful & profound as you please, as deep as the heart.

The scathe that cuts is clean and deep. There are no sleight of hands to be found in this opus, only hearts are worn on the sleeve here.

We've made it to Isle of Wax Mix number 20. This one comes courtesy London-based, Fujian-born DJ and producer Stella Z (@stella_zheng).  Her first single was released on La Bonne Musique (@lbmldn) in 2021 and earlier this year she released her excellent debut LP, "In The Woods, Will Be Late," on @thirdplacerecords, which features captivating soundscapes spanning downtempo, cosmic, and tribal genres, inspired by her mountainous seaside hometown.

Stella has been actively sharing her music as a DJ, bringing her unique selections to clubs and listening bars. Moreover, her skills and taste have earned her invitations to showcase her mixes on renowned programs like Dream Chimney, Friendly Potential, and more.

Beyond the stage, Stella showcases her curatorial passion as the host of "Mars Weather Today" on Threads Radio and "QUIET CHAOS" on Baihui.live, solidifying her versatility as a selector of both uptempo and downtempo sounds. Stella's talent and artistry have earned her a spot as one of the six Future Proof artists by the formidable Rhythm Section.

Needless to say, we're stoked to have her on board for number twenty. Tune in!

Based in the charming city of 's-Hertogenbosch, Rosa has become a well-known face in the south of the Netherlands, by throwing free outdoor parties and founding the 'Rooibosch' collective. When she's not throwing parties, she organizes free music production courses and DJ lessons.

Rosa's musical identity defies easy categorization as she draws inspiration rom a diverse array of rhythms and genres. Her journey began in her late teens, curating a wide-ranging collection of world music records. When performing, she seamlessly blends this early passion with bass-heavy, percussion-driven electronic music, crafting sets that pulse with dynamic energy shifts.

Burn is the second YS album and written as a direct follow-up album to Brutal Flowers. If their first album was an exercise in the incremental, a construction of poise and patience, Burn, should be taken way the fuck at it’s word: it quite literally finds catharsis in twisted reverse. Birthed out the malignant kick found in deconstruction and chaos. Evil twin, psychotic younger sibling, call it what the hell you like. It might take you a moment to get the lay of the land in this darkly mutated world. Like a bug eye’d native first confronted with a zippo, the hit is radical and instant: a new way for the world to go up in smoke.

Splice the Seattle slacker scene with the spliffhead soundsystem culture of the '90s Bristol trip-hop scene, then cross-breed that with the DIY optimism and glee in creation found in the cut-and-paste worlds of skate, graffiti and hiphop, now run that through the skitzo basement mind of John.T. Gast and you’re close to the kind of scorched earth and spiked suburbia that birthed Burn.

Dunno quite what YS have been ingesting of late, but this massively twisted LP touches on a host of gloriously fucked totemic underground sources while not sounding much like any of them. It has the ballsy swagger and hard flipping of the script as Massive Attack’s seminal Blue Lines. Indeed, the eponymous album tracks sound similar - the opener ‘Burn’ is like a hard-nosed, jammed-out redux of ‘Blue Lines’. Getting into a kind of slow-spinning overdubbed maximal euphoria ending with mumbled downer vocals, struggling to conceal their tongues in their cheeks, there’s an air of paranoia and proto-conspiracy theory. It’ll leave you scratching your head, feeling like you’ve stepped into a New World Order governed by a cacophony of dropouts, dope fiends, and apocalyptic stoners. A cracked-out world somewhere between Richard Linklater’s movie Slacker (1990) and Marc Singer’s Dark Days (2001).

The rest of the album parts like a tongue on a wine glass: Smith and Mighty, Bandulu, ambient Luke Slater records, Wah Wah Wino, Nurse with Wound, Land of the Loops, Placid Angels, Adrian Sherwood, Urban Tribe and DJ Shadow can all be heard in momentary splatters - but Burn like other works by YS, is its own ritual beast. ‘Moth’, a track that has been circulating the underground DJ circuit for many moons, is a raw, chopped, and screwed slice of stoner erotica that reeks of obsession and unrequited desire. Elsewhere, on tracks like ‘Switch’, ‘Trying’, and ‘Drift’, the throughline from Brutal Flowers can be heard. Underneath the driving heavy gravity, the trademark emotional intimacies of YS linger: eternal recurrence, ghosts of static and shortwave, worn memories of the playful and painful sort. The brief moments when flashes of orchestral ambience emerge from beneath the swagger are so pure, personal, and unguarded that, for a moment, they leave you completely alone. In the album’s closer ‘End’, you can hear the fleeting promise and DIY possibilities of an analogue world and embers of ash that flutter in its wake: where it seemed, for a brief moment, that collective of DJs, engineers, rappers, graffiti artists and skate crews were emerging from the streets, giving the middle fingers to the system, before just as quickly disappearing back to the doldrums of obscurity. ‘End’ is a bittersweet ode to early soundsystem culture, MCs and pirate radio - an out of step time where for a moment the underdogs and weirdos seemed to be kicking on the door of something bigger.

A veritable teenage doof suite dosed with desire, claustrophobia, and deviance. Burn is a good old howl at the moon: lonely, raw, and out for blood; basement style exegesis at its best. A thump to the gut, a stud through your blood. A dubbed-to-death classic straight out of the annals of nowhere. A perfect postcard from oblivion. A bleak, bold, and personally ferocious vision of tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.

In 2015, Nic and the rest of the SSG crew began as a DJ collective to bring the Balearic Sound to the clubs and bars around Munich and to the natural beaches of the idyllic Ammersee, where he is based.  They have since started a monthly show on @radio80000 and have plans to found a record label. 

In his free time, Nic enjoys cruising around on his vintage motorcycle to scan the thrift and record shops of the backland for musical gems and scouting for cosy party locations at the lake where people can wiggle in the water at one of his summer get downs.
