This track was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0522: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.
All sounds were created from the recording of an ice-cube rattling in five different glasses. The inspiration led to this piece, trying to find out how eternal ice sounds.

The Loneliest Pelican (Disquiet0591)

This track was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0604 (details see below): 
My track https://soundcloud.com/rabmusiclab/parsimony was remixed by implementing gates on the different instruments. For each instrument a line was drawn on the cover-photo, and the opening and closing of the gates was determined by the colours of the clouds along the line. 

Since the original track was called parsimony (as a result of Ockham's razor), the title of this track was quickly determined.

Ockham's Cloud Gates (Disquiet0604)

This track was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0608 (see below for details);
A field recording made on an IC train in the Netherlands (and already used for the track https://soundcloud.com/rabmusiclab/aankomst-amsterdam-zuid) was fed into the free transcription tool https://editor.flixier.com/transcribe/. The resulting Spanish text was translated into English. The free text-to-speech tool https://ttsfree.com/ was then used to create the voice pronouncing this text.

The field recording and the voice are accompanied by various instruments improvised to the existing soundscape.

The track-title is one of the translated sentences the AI has thought to recognize from the sounds of the train's interior.

The lyrics created by this magical approach are:

Alicia.

For if we are to what we are.
I have,
I don't know to yes.

Yes,

This track is my contribution to the Asynchronous Drone Orchestra (iteration March 2024), as always mixed and combined by @chelidon-frame.

My contribution is based on two small snippets of a field-recordings I made in Innsbruck. I stood on the Christoph-Probst-Platz on Friday, 16th February 2024 and recorded - among other noises - a short bird call and the noise of a helicopter taking off. I used PaulXStretch to turn these two snippets into several evolving soundscapes. I added additional effects and mixed the sounds to this track.

The beautiful poem by William Wordsworth, set to a musical soundscape designed to enhance the feelings evoked.

This track is a re-recording of https://soundcloud.com/rabmusiclab/dance-with-the-daffodils. I was not entirely happy with the direction that track had taken and wanted to give it a new atmosphere.

While strolling through the quarter Wilten of Innsbruck I had discovered the bookshop Daffodils. It had the last two lines of this William Wordsworth poem printed on the shop window - this was the inspiration for creating the original track.

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud  (Disquiet0641)

This piece was inspired by my wife: She suggested that I set to music the beautiful poem by Dylan Thomas, read by the poet himself.

I felt that I could never do justice to this masterpiece by trying to compose music to accompany it. Therefore I resorted to improvisation. So I let my fingers express my feelings while listening to the recording and improvised the different instruments.

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night

This track was inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project: Putting the ageing of a stone into music.
Stones can live for a very long time, but there are also external influences on a much shorter time scale. In my composition I included the monotonous phases, but also these external events, and tried to put them into appropriate music.

A Day In The Life Of Stone (Disquiet0643)

This track is an alternative version of the track https://soundcloud.com/rabmusiclab/orchestral-meadow and should also evoke the happy feeling of spending time outside, just embracing and enjoying nature.

The sounds based on strings were replaced with sounds based on piano and some effects were exchanged.

This track was created while dreaming about the wonderful holiday we spent in Cornwall this year and the soothing, fulfilling and uplifting walks we took along the breathtakingly beautiful Coastal Path.

This track was inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project. Feeling a bit demotivated about my musical output of the last two weeks, this prompt gave me the necessary impulse, and I created this drone in a creative flow using and manipulating sounds I crafted over the last few weeks.

Mind Textures (Disquiet0675)

The title refers to the Lugger in Polruan (https://www.luggerpolruan.co.uk/). It was named after this inn even before the first note was played, but how the Lugger influenced this track is no longer known.

This track was begun in June 2024. The main elements for an ambient track were used to create an uplifting electronic track. But this endeavour (as well as work on the original ambient track) was stopped in July 2024. In October 2024 I worked on the track again for a short time.

This week's Disquiet Junto Project finally motivated me to put some finishing touches to the track and release it.

The music visualises the different phases of a game played by two people. The emotions and situations change...

All the percussion and drum sounds were derived from recording the shaking of the dice in the dice cup and then throwing them on the board.

Homo Ludens (Disquiet0685)

After watching the wonderful TV series "In My Skin", I tried to compose a track to match this touching story. While playing the piano melody on my midi keyboard, I recorded the mechanical sounds of the keys using a smartphone and a dictaphone.
This recording approach was inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project, but doesn't follow that prompt closely.
These recordings (treated with various effects) were mixed with the piano, and strings and synth sounds were added to the track, all to support the guiding emotion drawn from the story.

In My Skin - the Sound of Sound  (Disquiet0689)

Following this week's Disquiet Junto project this track was created using a historic recording of the Ravel string quartet from 1928.
This is the sound of a dream, dissolved beyond recognition, but still present as the conscious cause of this unconscious music.

The audio was transformed using spectral synthesizers and effect chains to create this dreamlike rendition. No other sounds or instruments were employed.

Sunset Duvet (Disquiet0696)

This track was inspired by a beautiful field recording of birds in the grounds of Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. The recording was made and provided by @the_robocat. 
The composition was developed by improvising on the keyboard while listening to the birds.
The recording of the birds was enhanced, and additional bird ambience is introduced by the strings.

Behind the Window [Extended Version] (Disquiet0701)

This track is my contribution to Cities and Memory's Spring Project 2025 (citiesandmemory.com/spring-project-2025/). I was inspired by Jamie House's field recording, 'The future pasts of the Rotterdam Bridge', and reimagined it as this experimental piece of music.

I accompanied the music with the following description:

Jamie House's field recording, Rotterdam Bridge, reflects the impact of civilisation. There are endless noises of traffic in different tonalities and volumes.
The sound of the bridge itself can be heard, as well as the sounds of nature — birds, water and the sea beneath the bridge.

The track "Rotterdam Dystopia" attempts to translate this complex system into music. Everything in this world is based on the sea, which therefore appears in the track.

The rhythm of modern life is played by percussion instruments derived from snippets of sound from the field recording, which are sometimes transformed.
The musical content is also completely derived from the recording — chord progressions and notes were extracted and only adapted to fit the musical scales.

The track was built using these materials with the aim of conveying the disturbing and sometimes dystopian feelings already present in the field recording of the modern world.

Rotterdam Dystopia

One of my favourite books is the novel "The Light on the Mountains" (Birtan á fjöllunum) by Jón Kalman Stefánsson. It starts with the sentence 'Sometimes it is as if everything in the past becomes poetry', which is my translation of the German phrase 'Manchmal ist es, als würde alles Vergangene zu Poesie', as written in my German edition of this Icelandic novel.
I tried to set this sentence to music as part of this week's Disquiet Junto project.

Taking inspiration from this week's Disquiet Junto project, I created this ambient track using recordings of my own voice.
I sang some sustained notes, recorded them, and used granular and spectral synthesis, as well as applying many different effects, to create the soundscape and the more vocal-like sounds. Everything is really based on my voice.

La Voix du Rêve (Disquiet0708)

This track was inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project: The barcode of the softcover Penguin edition of Daniel Kahneman's "Thinking, Fast and Slow" was used as the timeline for the rhythm, and the track was created with this beat as inspiration.
The other elements followed, found through intuition or happy accidents.
The result is a far groovier track than I initially assumed.
