Excited to announce the return of the EE Polish series in conjunction with Unsound Festival, Krakow.
Highlighting Polish musicians, DJs and producers from thwe local scene - all of whom performed at this year's 2018 Unsound Festival.

EE 506 | Resina        -  [album on Fat Cat this year]
Resina is a Polish cellist and composer signed by Fat Cat’s imprint 130701, which has now released two of her solo albums, including this year’s Traces. She’s very well known on local scene as a frequent collaborator of many artists in different genres. Solo, she’s carving her own way in modern classical indebted ambient music. Her second album Traces sees her expanding her sound palette, employing not only otherworldly soundscapes created from heavily looped and processed cello, but also wordless vocals and rhythms. These take inspiration from an obsession with damaged sacral objects, memory, survivors of violence and the ravages of time.

Co-runner of Intruder Alert label, best known for her intense "all or nothing” sets. This year KRY played shows in London, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, Osaka and Budapest and been working on her debut EP for Intruder Alert teasing the release with her latest track "Lost".

Unsound - Electronic Explorations Polish Special 2018

2019 marks the 10th edition of the Bangface Weekender, which has hosted weekend-long raves in Pontins Holiday Parks throughout the UK. Bangface began as a small underground party in London in 2003. It has since hosted stages at Glastonbury, Glade, Dour Festival as well as parties in Belgium and the Netherlands. Every event delivers a singular Neo-Rave explosion of acid, jungle, rave hardcore, drum & bass, breakcore, bass, techno and electronica. Remarc and The DJ Producer have been Bangface resident DJs for many years.

Zeitgeber is the duo of Speedy J and Lucy. Both renowned techno artists in their own  right, they’ve teamed up together to create a spellbinding album of abstract electronics. As  the owner of Electric Deluxe, Speedy J has overseen one of modern techno’s finest  imprints. He was there at techno’s beginnings as a DJ and producer, and he continues to  stand at its avant-garde, pushing his artists and himself to continue to innovate.

The same  goes for Stroboscopic Artefacts head Lucy, whose young imprint has never failed to  impress in its ambition and output. Lucy has a clear vision of what he wants with his  imprint, and across the label’s three album releases you can see that it has been  achieved. Zeitgeber marks a new era for Stroboscopic Artefacts. “I recorded this mix on a Thursday a couple of months back.  The sun was shining, my windows were open and I was practising for a gig in London that weekend. I thought it would be the perfect day to record a vinyl set, so I gathered up a few records around me, new and old, just ones that I love, and I went to work. Perhaps truly haphazard behaviour on my part but, truth be known, I don’t always plan out my sets when recording them, I just let the music be my guide.  In this case this mix just seemed to really come together, and when I listened back, I hoped it would be worthy of the great Electronic Explorations.  Thankfully, it was!  * I send my apologies for the skip at 17:52, my cat Bear came flying past and clipped the deck on his way out the window.  miaow.  Enjoy!”

“For this mix, Rob handed over some tracks, and I added some of my own. These were all tunes we agreed kept to the vibe of that party – brooding, dark, insistent, hard and a bit twisted. I especially like the Violetshaped remixes, we’d discovered them via some friends in Serbia, and they certainly blow a lot of other stuff out of the water. Broken and syncopated. Some pads and strings were added to make the mix more interesting, to give some contrast with the brutal beats. There’s a few non-techno tracks in there as well, including a snippet of an acid track due for next year on Combat (“Rebuild”). Hope you like.” ~ Stormfield

“When Rob asked us to provide a warehouse mix for Electronic Explorations, we were very excited at the possibilities of which tracks to use for the mix. To us a warehouse rave is all about big sounding records, industrial venues and a crowd that are totally up for it. So when we recorded the mix, we gathered a selection of old tracks that have a lot of inspiration for us and new tracks that we think have a similar aesthetic and attitude. We wanted the mix to be dark and driving, with a movement between the more percussive, rhythmic and melodic sounds within techno.” ~ AnD

The main themes in the mix centre around wood percussions, thunderous synth pads and chopped Zulu vocals - creating a kind of dark atmospheric sound. It is anthem like, vivid, tribal, abstract in parts and yet specifically dramatic. 

The sound reminds me - in part - of techno in the late 90s where my dj'ing journey began at 'Teknival' and illegal rave party but also has elements of early dubstep which was deep and mystical.

Most of the tracks were new releases that came out of my recent trip to Durban as well as tracks recently sent to me via whatsapp.
 
The mix is a tribute to the artists of my label Gqom Oh!, their crews and friends. It also includes a handful of exclusive tracks from the next release "Gqom Oh! X crudo Volta Mixtape".

It is Rough, rugged and raw. It's riot music.

Yousuke Yukimatsu was born in Osaka in 1979 and started DJing in 2008. He got his first big break in 2014 when he played with DJ Nobu and NHK'Koyxen. From then, Yukimatsu soon had the chance to play at Future Terror and Dommune, as well as supporting many of the most interesting names coming through Osaka, such as Cut Hands, Adam, Marcel Fengler, Oneohtrix Point Never as well as playing at the PAN records showcase. In 2016 Yukimatsu started his own party called “Zone Unknown”, which has invited people like Shapednoise and Imaginary Forces. He also helped in the compilation of tracks for YPY’s album, Zurhyrethm, on EM Records, and has released a mix CD entitled ‘Lazy Rouse’ through Black Smoker records.
 
2008年 大阪atmosphäreでのSPINNUTSとMITSUKI主催『KUHIO PANIC』に飛び入り参加して以降DJとして活動。 THE NAMINOHANA SPECIALでのKEIHIN、DJ NOBUとの共演から親交を深め、2014年春、千葉FUTURE TERRORでプレイ。 2015年は2度のDOMMUNE出演、goatのサポートを数多く務め、PAN showcaseではLEE GAMBLEとB2B。Oneohtrix Point Neverの前座を務めるなど、活動の場を拡げる。 2016年2月、SHAPEDNOISEをゲストに迎えてPARTY『ZONE UNKNOWN』始動。 5月、BLACK SMOKERよりMIX CD『LAZY ROUSE』をリリース。

Electronic Explorations – Japan special
 
Japan has long played a fundamental role in electronic music, from being the home of many of its defining instruments to the early contributions of artists such as YMO, then Fumiya Tanaka, Keni Ishii and DJ Krush, amongst others. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in the country as another generation of artists has come to the fore, with artists like DJ Nobu, Ena, Ryo Murakami and Goth-Trad gaining international recognition. 

Electronic Explorations has recently featured mixes previously from Japanese producers such as Wata Igarashi and Katsunori Sawa. But geography and language barriers mean that some of the country’s talent is not seen. So for this series we wanted to put the spotlight on the next wave of artists in Japan. All are primarily DJs and at different stages of their respective careers, but each has a distinct and interesting take on electronic music.

Monday (月) – Yousuke Yukimatsu (Osaka, Japan)

Surgeon once used the tag ‘drone and bass’ to describe one of his sets for Boiler Room, and that is also a pretty accurate term to use for Zodiak’s mix. It resides in the gray zone between techno and experimental, the kind of set you might expect to hear Atonal festival. What distinguishes Zodiak’s approach to this style of music is his restraint, it is a considered mix that explores darker sounds without becoming oppressive or alienating for the listener. - [Words: Chris SSG]

Bio:
Zodiak is a DJ and graphic designer based in Osaka. His design work is featured regularly in the music scene, and he is currently in charge of the art direction for Pulp Gallery. As a DJ, he can regularly be found on the lineup at some of the most interesting parties in Osaka. In 2015 he released a pair of mixtapes with MGMD: “Serious Killer” and “Techno Allergy”, and he has “Urges”, a split tape with Yousuke Yukimatsu, forthcoming on Depth of Decay.

Lynne provides a mix firmly located in the in-between zone labels like Samurai, Hidden Hawaii and Auxiliary have been exploring, building out of drum & bass and connecting to more interesting strands of techno. She delivers a tightly structured set that pushes and pulls in all the right places. Still a relatively new DJ, Lynne demonstrates she has a deft ear and touch on the decks, with a mix that echoes the vibe you might expect from someone like ASC. Lynne (real name Rin Miyamoto) is a female DJ based in Tokyo. She started exploring drum and bass sounds around 2010, and subsequently became more deeply involved in music as a result of of a period spent living in London. Since returning to Tokyo Lynne has become active as a DJ, playing at a range of events including at Goth-Trad’s famed ‘Back to Chill’ party. In 2015 she gained more attention through an impressive mix that placed her as a finalist in a Samurai Music mix competition. In her sets, Lynne is interested in exploring experimental 170bpm bass sounds building out of drum & bass.
 
Lynne(本名Rin Miyamoto)は東京を拠点として活動する、日本人女性DJ。
2010年にBeatProxy(現在のO-MA)と出会い、彼のmixに感銘を受け、ドラムンベースを中心にベースミュージックに傾倒していった。
その後渡英し、ロンドンでの音楽体験を経て、帰国後にDJ活動をスタート。
ドラムンベースから派生した170bpmの実験的なベースサウンドを自在に操り、
エモーショナルなグルーヴに昇華させるのが彼女のプレイスタイル。
2015年3月に行われたSamurai Music DJ Competitionでは優勝し、ロンドンで行われたSamurai Musicのレーベルパーティーでプレイする。
国内ではGoth-trad主催のBack To Chillなどに出演している。

DJ Yazi is a fixture of the Tokyo scene, someone who has been quietly honing his craft for many years. But for whatever reason, it took me a while to discover his abilities. What did it was hearing him in warm up mode. In a slot that too many DJs get wrong, Yazi showed a deep understanding of his role and played beautifully. A similar sense of care and patience is on display in this mix, with Yazi perfectly building the energy as he moves from more abstract sounds into a very heady brand of techno. – [Words: Chris SSG]

DJ Yazi has been active since the mid-1990s, drawing inspiration from across the musical spectrum: the mentality of hip hop, the ferocity of dub and jazz, the intensity of techno and the euphoria of house. As a DJ he moves fluidly across styles, with his sets connected by a strong focus on deep and tripped out grooves. Yazi is a core member of Black Smoker records and has appeared at the major clubs in Tokyo and parties throughout Japan. He also performs with Haruka as Twin Peaks, an improvisational live act.

Haruka has been associated with Future Terror for a long time, but in recent years he has stepped out from Nobu’s shadow and firmly established himself as one of Japan’s leading techno DJs. A clever DJ with a strong sense for the dynamics of the dancefloor, Haruka is adept at locking into a groove and keeping the energy going. This is reflected in his mix, which is a strong demonstration of the kind of deeper take on techno that Japanese crowds gravitate towards. In recent years Haruka has established himself at the forefront of Japan’s next generation of techno DJs. Since moving to Tokyo at the age of 26, he has honed his skills as a DJ through becoming a resident DJ and co-organizer of DJ Nobu’s infamous Future Terror parties. He has played throughout Japan, including appearances at most of the major clubs in Tokyo – such as Unit, Contact, Dommune  – as well as at the Fuji Rock and Rural festivals. Haruka has distinguished himself through his versatility as a DJ, with the ability to play carefully crafted opening sets, driving and powerful techno in peaktime slots, as well as afterhours sessions or more experimental explorations. These skills have also been displayed on mixes for the Juno Plus and Clubberia podcast series. In addition to his DJing, Haruka is half of Twin Peaks, an improvisational live act he does with DJ Yazi. Haruka commenced 2016 by playing an extended closing set at Future Terror's New Year's Eve party, an important moment in defining his musical trajectory for the year to come.

Jóhann is a figurehead in a dynamic and developing scene of composers who move freely and inventively between film scores, minimalist classical, ambient and electronic music. He is equally at home writing commissioned works for the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, Bang on a Can and Theatre of Voices ensembles, as he is collaborating with Tim Hecker, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Pan Sonic, CAN drummer Jaki Liebezeit, Marc Almond, Barry Adamson, and Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))).

Requests from filmmakers to use Jóhannsson’s music in their films has led to a flourishing career in writing original music for more than a dozen movies. Jóhannsson was awarded a Golden Globe in January 2015 for Best Film Score for The Theory Of Everything, directed by James Marsh, whilst his music for the film also earned him both Oscar and BAFTA nominations for Best Original Score.  Jóhannsson’s score for Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario was similarly honored with a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination in 2016.  

This year will see two major films featuring Jóhann’s original music: Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and James Marsh’s The Mercy starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz.

Parisian based DJ and producer and resident of Blocaus in Paris, Anetha has quickly become a prominent figure in the Paris underground music scene. 

Oscillating between acid lines, melancholic melodies, hypnotic patterns and strong grooves, Anetha also likes to mix her sets with a sprinkling of 90’s tracks offering a deep and pulsating journey. 

Production wise, Anetha made her debut on November 2015 with an excellent EP on Spencer Parker’s imprint Work Them Records. Also, released on June 2016 a track called Tomorrow’s DNA on Reclaim Your City on the Paris – Berlin 2.0 EP alongside Francois X, I/Y and Abayomi. 

In October 2016, Anetha and the Blocaus crew presented their new imprint ‘Blocaus Series.’

Recently Anetha signed her first track to Clone Records’ affiliated imprint Anagram "Acid Train" alongside Sinfol, Elad Magdasi and Dävide.

Recording Podcasts, in my eyes, is in most cases something that only transports bits of a story - leaving out the full picture. If you record a DJ set at a club, you ideally will create a narrative that fits the people and the room you are playing for. However, listening back to that recording will leave this important detail out of the picture. Of course, you as the DJ and people that were there that night will "get it", but if you were not there you might be wondering why the DJ played that song, why s/he played softer or harder than usual - it is not clear. 

Recording a mix at home comes with similar problems: Where do you want to take your listener? If you want to deliver a club set, it will not be an authentic recording in the end - I can not record a club set at home, with only my dog in the audience. The energy will never reach the energy a recording from an actual club night will be able to deliver.

For this Electronic Explorations podcast, I recorded two mixes in a way, in which I would play my DJ sets in a club. The results lacked the pressure, the urge and the spontaneous creativity I'd let myself be led by in a sweaty DJ booth. This led me to this conclusion and eventually, I decided to delete both of these recordings and start over.

So one night I went to bed and turned on the radio - Deutschland Radio Kultur, which is a German culture radio station. And they were broadcasting the audio drama "Mein Herz ist Leer" ("My heart is empty") by Werner Fritsch. A dark, possessive voice was reading stitched-together haikus and thereby telling a story of a struggling monk buried in sound-design by Miki Yui. I loved what this story did to me before falling asleep and I could not wait to get up in the morning to try to create a podcast around this story.

My idea was to keep the story alive and become its music supervisor, trying to choose tracks that I loved in 2017 and using them to tell the story, even if you do not understand the German narrator word by word, I was aiming to select sounds, that will, in combination with the ever-present voice of the narrator, drive the story just through the music. At the same time, I tried to create a listening experience that sits between soothing calmness and chilling shudder - just like some of the old Eastern European Christmas tales I've been listening to when I was a child.

I've done a mix like that before at Dommune in 2013, where I took an old Japanese horror story and used the music to drive the story itself. Technically I did it the same way here: Mixing with records and Traktor and using a sampler to launch the bits of the audiobook at the right times.

This mix is a slight departure from my usual ‘tried-and-tested’ format. I wanted to play with a steady 140 BPM throughout, letting melodic elements and sound textures control the flow. It features a blend of recent vinyl releases and some of my digital-only favourites found on bandcamp, as well as a track from the new label I’m starting (Intrepid Skin) and a track my friend Nikolaj exported the very same day I recorded this (Sugar - Dark Side Of The Spoon).

Tailgating SPFDJ is no easy task. Her sharp ascent is born of a taste for dynamics that approach and bank with ecstatic momentum. Occasionally working at vicious speeds, acidic techno climes are funnelled through kaleidoscopic wares from the wealth of high-energy
outposts found across dance music today.

Though hailing from Sweden, SPFDJ’s beginnings were in London as part of the infamous collective Universe of Tang, an ongoing club operation steeped in DIY means and mystifying aesthetics. Then a relocation to Berlin prompted a new chapter of projects and activity, and the chance to import her affiliations. With sprintf, she runs the Cranial Handles transmission as well as the System.out sound system. Power Play is the latest party coerced into life by SPFDJ, sprintf, and others.

Imogen is already seen to be shaping the next generation of Electronic music. Originally from Southampton, Imogen moved to London to study music production and then put her own parties on before she was 18 just to be able to play in the clubs. She first created a platform with her radio residency to showcase already legendary and rising talent, since then things have moved pretty fast for her already playing at Berghain and opening The Moat for Dimensions festival.

Now the winter is approaching Imogen has a string of releases in the pipeline; her first release is coming out this month on Sunil Sharpes label ‘Earwiggle’ along side Giant Swan, Delta Funktionen and Autumns. There is also another piece from her on Mumdance’s Shared Meanings VA out later this year.

The Electronic Explorations podcast series has become a much loved and influential archive of dance music’s evolution over the last 11 years. Despite starting way before the medium exploded, and years ahead of the online radio explosion, it has remained utterly vital to this day. It is perfectly fitting, then, that the rather monumental 500th episode is taken care of by Paul Woolford, a producer who has been around just as long and is arguably more relevant than ever. He is a meticulous producer whose music is deeply layered, with finely crafted synths, devastating drums and perfect mix downs. From big piano house to vocal classics via twisted techno, he is impossible to pin-down and, frankly, a wilful contrarian.

The Special Request project started out as an ode to the youth of his pirate radio, to the sheer thrill of illicit raving and the raw power of the breakbeat. By now—two albums and countless EPs on Houndstooth and its own eponymous label later—it is about so much more: it is cinematic sound design, striking ambient, futuristic electro and IDM, soulful 2-step and whatever else Woolford fancies, all crafted to a dizzyingly high standard.

And, predictably, it’s the same story with this podcast, which is a storytelling one hour 45 minutes with a number of different chapters. Starting off as an ambient soundtrack with spoken word snippets and space travel motifs, it could be the recording of a cosmic exploration. 20 minutes later, you’re welcomed to the heart of smoky, strobe lit, euphoric dance floor and taken on a breathless trip through all the unadulterated, heart-on-sleeve and sweat-on-brow sounds that make Special Request such an utterly thrilling project.

“I started to work with Rob Booth on bringing the Special Request project to wider attention through signing to Houndstooth in 2013. Along with Rob Butterworth at the label, the three of us forged a clear connection based on mutual respect and a shared passion for spannered tracks of all persuasions.

“During the first conversation I had with Rob Booth in December 2012, I said to him how much I loved and respected the Electronic Explorations podcast series. The depth and detail in this vast archive of mixes is testament to Rob’s tireless and never-ending quest to look under every possible rock and boulder to see what emerges.

“His obvious delight and enthusiasm in the process is as engaging as it is a joy to behold. Once we had the Soul Music album completed, Rob started to ask me for a contribution to EE, to which I always said, “we’ll get around to it”. We released the Belief System album last year and of course Rob was asking me again for the mix. There was always something in the way, which is often how things can be in this game.

“Fast forward to April this year, and Rob called me in Amsterdam and asked me to do EE500. I immediately agreed and said, “three weeks”. Six months later, after driving Rob up the wall with frustration, I managed to find the time last week to make it happen. I had a right doss banging this lot out. I sincerely hope you enjoy the mix as much as I enjoyed putting it together.”

After releasing a few recordings on smaller record labels in Germany and his own Cross Fade Entertainment Imprint, and being heralded as a favorite on John Peel's radio show in 1994, de Babalon signed to DHR in 1996, releasing a few EPs and later releasing his only full-length album for the label, If You're Into It, I'm Out of It in 1997.De Babalon was signed after he befriended label operator Alec Empire at a rave in 1994.

The album was well received and gained mostly positive reviews, with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke describing it as "the most menacing record [he] owns", but in sound was different to other DHR releases, offering a new vision of electronic music that varied greatly from that of artists such as Atari Teenage Riot and EC8OR, who used industrial sounds with hardcore punk and gabber influences. With the release of If You're Into It, I'm Out of It, de Babalon solidified his signature sound as a combination of extreme complexity in construction and complete experimentation in form. Songs span many electronic genres including noise, soundscapes, dark ambient, drum and bass and breakcore. Some of his tracks are also known for their length, lasting up to 15 minutes.

Since 2008, de Babalon has been releasing music more often, even reissuing rare unreleased tracks as a compilation via his own bandcamp page titled The Haunting Past of Christoph de Babalon, Vol. 1 in 2014. He issued his long awaited follow up studio album to If You're Into It, I'm Out of It, titled A Bond With Sorrow, digitally through Kid606's TigerBeat6 imprint in 2012. His fourth full-length album, Short Eternities, was issued in 2015 through Love Love Records.

In his review of the 2018 remaster 'If You're Into It, I'm Out of It', Philip Sherburne of Pitchfork concluded that "no one has ever made another record quite like this one".

When the topic of the combination of dark ambient and electronic music is brought up, many writers often bring up ‘If You're Into It, I'm Out of It’ and its significance.

Involved with Brutaż and Światło parties plus the Brutaż label. A proud to be resident of Szpitalna 1 in Kraków.

This mix was recorded live in one take, from records, as usual, with plenty on my mind. I borrowed a mixer (from DJ Dzuma), then my neighbour called the police and had a meltdown just when I started - it was just 7PM! - So I had to head back to Dzuma's place and quickly recorded it there. This is a good place to give a shout out to his party - SYNTETYK is a gorgeous night, may it live forever

I'm involved with Brutaż and Światło parties, I've only just recently dug myself out of a hole and can afford relative stability which I'm trying to apply to my DJ sets. Also, there's this Brutaż label that I supposedly run, next year will bring quite a few records that you might or might not dance to. I like to DJ long and late and I think I can do it well every now and then. I'm proud to be resident of Szpitalna 1 in Kraków and am hoping to buy speakers and achieve some sort of calmness and resources to be at peace with my music and records - and doing that without losing my moody dynamic late-night bubble styles that we managed to develop on our parties.

Multi-disciplinary artist, whose work incorporates music production, live performance and graphic design. An avid mountaineer. Having grown up in the post-industrial bleakness of 90’s Katowice, he was originally drawn to graffiti art, and soon enough to the music that often accompanied it at the time – classic electro and industrial. 

These twin interests have fuelled his creative endeavours ever since, leading him on the one hand to study and eventually teach at the city’s Academy of Fine Arts, and on the other to explore sound and rhythm – from early experiments with desktop micro-sampling, through the discovery of analogue synthesis, all the way to immersing himself in the praxis of live performance, spanning full-impact peak-time sets, far out late night odysseys, and extended offbeat improvisations. 

Deftly integrating a wide array of tools basic and arcane, vintage and state-of-the-art, Chino creates machine music par excellence, with a stark, brutalist property to it, but never without a spark of human soul shining through its dense layers. Even in the studio, he remains a live performer at heart, his output having a lot of the spontaneous intensity of his shows.
Chino is also one of the founders of Radar – originally a creditable (if short-lived) Kraków club, surviving as a collective and an event series, both crucial to the city’s underground scene. Apart from regular performances, and taking part in shaping policy, Chino is in charge of Radar’s visual aspect, where his penchant for converging music and art finds one of its most pronounced outlets.

He has been releasing on Recognition, S1 Warsaw, Holger, Altered States Tapes and Shtum.

His musical exploits have taken him as far as Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Russia, Israel, Georgia and Albania. And Germany.

Resina is a Polish cellist and composer signed by Fat Cat’s imprint 130701, which has now released two of her solo albums, including this year’s Traces. She’s very well known on local scene as a frequent collaborator of many artists in different genres. Solo, she’s carving her own way in modern classical indebted ambient music. Her second album Traces sees her expanding her sound palette, employing not only otherworldly soundscapes created from heavily looped and processed cello, but also wordless vocals and rhythms. These take inspiration from an obsession with damaged sacral objects, memory, survivors of violence and the ravages of time.

"I was pretty ecstatic to be asked to contribute to this particular mix series as it’s one I’ve been following for a long time. I recorded this mix completely live, as generally I feel more comfortable creating mixes that way as it’s more or less exactly how I would play in a club and I really wanted that style to really come across in this mix. In terms of track selection I wasn’t particularly methodical in my approach, I just compiled a load of music that I’ve recently discovered, loved and that is very dance floor friendly. I wanted to include some variation in terms of genre, however, mainly centering around techno and electro and aiming to increase the BPM as the mix progressed to create something very high energy. 'At different points in her life, Alexis Andrews has lived in Dubai, Amsterdam, Houston and London. If this combination suggests to you a DJ with an open mind, then you’d be right.

After making her start as an assistant and resident at Peckham’s Balamii Radio, Alexis found herself at the centre of a network of international influences whose orbit equipped her with the requisite skills for club fluency. Expect each set to manifest as an onslaught of groove-laced techno, electro, EBM and house, as resistant to trend as criticism.

The same can be said of her production; examples are scarce, but each demonstrates a percussion-forward approach to techno that would find her in good stead amongst the rosters of Die Orakel, Cong Burn, Tobago Tracks and other taste-making outlets.

Clearly, the takeoff is Alexis’ career is imminent; a Noods resident fresh from appearances alongside Objekt, Batu, Ryan Elliot, Paramida and many more, she’s a breath of fresh air in an environment where stagnancy means staleness.'

Having left a vivid impression in 2015 with his debut 12" 'A Rational Tangle' and 2nd EP 'Pattern Damage' on The Death of Rave. Warp sub-label Arcola relaunched with his single 'Contraposition' in 2018.
His debut album ATAXIA for Planet Mu rewires hyper-chromatic UK garage and pointillist footwork, establishing him as both a disruptive and essential new voice in British underground club music.

In 2019 he became resident at No Bounds Festival in his hometown of Sheffield. With recent live shows at Nyege Nyege Festival (UG), GES-2 (RU), Serralves (PT), Irish Museum of Modern Art (IRL), Berghain (DE), OHM (DE), Cafe Oto (UK), Glasgow Centre for Contemporary Arts (UK), Empty Gallery (HK), Summerhall (UK) as well as taking part in artists residencies at yU+co[lab] in Hong Kong and with Counterflows in India 2016 - 2017.

Following a string of EPs on his own eponymous imprint, Locked Groove (@lockedgrooves) presents his debut album - Sunset Service - OUT NOW on Scuba's Hotflush. Employing strands from multiple influences that inform his diverse musical output, he applies a contemporary lens to fragments of EBM, New Beat, trance, rave and techno. Since debuting with his first EP on Hotflush back in 2012, Locked Groove has delved into various genres to inform his constantly evolving sound. Drawing on an acute melodic ear developed whilst training as a classical pianist, all of his productions are underscored by an inherent sense of musicality. Using a diverse range of influences, he translates their sentiments into hybrid dance floor constructions that look primarily towards the 90s rave culture of Belgium, with a subtle nod to the UK.


Written over a one year period with combination of analog and digital equipment at his Berlin studio, Sunset Service documents the synthesis of a carefully studied musical background into one coherent body of work. Across twelve tracks, Locked Groove forges cathartic build-ups with intricate pads and floating melodies, re-purposing references - both subtle and overt - from the musical subcultures of his Belgian homeland. But although there is a strong connection to the past, these allusions are carefully moulded into a singular, forward-thinking sound.

‘Rave 'Till You Cry’
Came out April 5th 2019 via Disciples

Disciples follow-up the raid on the archives of Black Lodge with ‘Rave 'Till You Cry’ by enigmatic producer Bogdan Raczynski, a collection of unreleased tracks and versions.
 
Raczynski arrived on the scene in 1999 with not one but three albums released in quick succession that year alone on Rephlex Records, a unique operator even by Braindance standards, rumoured to have been discovered by Aphex Twin whilst sleeping rough in Tokyo. A steady stream of records followed, hyperactive broadsides of percussion set off by a winning knack for the buried earworm melody, much like his mentor RDJ. He also memorably collaborated with Björk and remixed Autechre for Warp's ‘10+3’ compilation, but things have been quiet since the release of his last studio album ‘Alright!’ arrived in 2007.

“I can’t believe it’s been almost 2 years since I did a mix for your first show, a lot has changed since then and I’ve moved on. I’ve chilled out a bit but with that comes more space to hear in-between the beats and more interesting sound design. That’s the approach I took with my recent double E.P ‘Lockout’ and the mix follows the same path but with fewer vocals and more beats.
For the mix, elements were taken from all over the place and layered together, a lot of UK funky coming out at the moment reminds me of old techno and warp stuff, mixing new afro-Caribbean influenced stuff like Roska with old Latin influenced Black Dog, Cooly G with Luke Slater”
