Emerald & Doreen Recordings once again delve into Eastern Europe with Ummagma, a Canadian-Ukrainian dream pop duo, who got their start in Moscow and have made enough waves there for a full-page spread in Rolling Stone Russia. Ummagma combines their love of indie rock, synthpop and electronica to create “dreamgaze” power pop. Indie dreampop shoegaze crossover artists Ummagma celebrate their ethereal Stereolab-MBV-spirited uber-song ‘Lama’ by releasing it, along with a package of eclectic remixes, on Emerald & Doreen Recordings. This LP features an international roster of producers and artists, most of whom are not directly connected with genres like indie, noise rock or dreampop. Apart from their own roots in Canada and Ukraine, this Ummagma LP represents a creative gathering ground for remixers from Italy, Sweden, Germany, Brazil and Russia - each contributing his own wavelength and energy to create a new version of ‘Lama’.

The outcome shows that beauty is found in diversity. Italy’s original electro new wave pioneer Alexander Robotnick sways with a spaced out, chilled dream pop version. Irregular Disco Workers add some severe 80s mood and 90s acid feel. Copycat fuses a Moroder-esque synth disco arpeggio with My Bloody Valentine-style vocals and guitars to ingeniously please indie and disco lovers at the same time! Theatre of Delays delivers a heartbreaking emo house version that brings you into the fifth dimension. Label-makers go nogo turn Lama into a Stereolab-esque breakbeat beauty with Notwist-like sounds and 90s indie guitars. Mind Movies turn ‘Lama’ into a flipping, winding mechanical world of breakbeat, swirling around its own axis, and spinning a beautiful tumbling dance. Sounds of Sputnik add a 70s psychedelic edge to it, infusing this track with electro wonder.

2014 also sees Ummagma pursuing various other collaborations, remixes and releases, involving Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), Malcolm Holmes (Orchestral Maneouvres in the Dark), Sounds of Sputnik (Moscow), Lights That Change (UK), Graingerboy (UK), and Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver/ Brian Jonestown Massacre).

Ummagma began in 2003 when Alexx (Ukrainian) and Shauna (Canadian) met at a concert in Moscow. Since then, they have been blending their love of synthpop, alternative rock and electronica to create deliciously diverse, dreamy music, loaded with positivity. They 'debuted' in 2012 by simultaneously releasing 2 LPs ('Antigravity' and 'Ummagma') in 2012.

In 2013, Ummagma won the Alternative Eurovision hosted by Amazing Radio, representing Ukraine from 21 countries, and picked up 2 awards at the Australian Independent Music Video Awards (including best international pop video), not to mention a full-page spread in Rolling Stone Russia.

Formed in Moscow in 2003, Canadian Shauna McLarnon and Ukrainian Alexx Kretov have been consistently writing and recording music whilst living between Ukraine and Canada. Shauna’s delicate airy gossamer-like vocals hold glimmers of Cocteau Twins, Stereolab, The Sundays, Curve, Lush, and Slowdive. Alexx's guitar, vocals, synths, beats and programming create cinematic soundscapes with elements of Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Bill Nelson and Brian Eno, enabling the listener soar above the music.

In "Kiev Remixes", Ummagma rise above the decay and mayhem encountered in that country to embrace diversity and beauty, while taking their music in new directions. ‘Kiev’ is not only the epicenter of massive civil unrest – it is the name of this release, and is ultimately a message of hope. The outcome shows that what is the end for one person may be the start for another.  In ‘Kiev’, this Canadian-Ukrainian team celebrates their freedoms, exploring the root of today’s problems to create beauty in the face of hostility. The outcome of this release shows that what is the end for one person may be the start for another. Even more importantly, it shows that beauty can blossom even in the midst of ugliness. Despite heavy turmoil in Ukraine, Ummagma look forward to a brighter future for Eastern Europe. 

This release is an impressive package featuring the original track ‘Kiev’ plus 9 remixes from 9 fantastic artists from as many countries, celebrating the splendour of the original composition in their own unique styles. One of these artists is Japanese producer Shintaro Haioka, who is one of just three Red Bull Music Academy artists from Japan, renowned for mixing traditional Japanese instrumentation, such as the koto, with electronic chill sounds.  In the words of the Academy, which is now underway in Tokyo, “Haioka offers a distinctively Japanese take on modern electronic music, and one that rationalises the past with the future, and his nation with the world.” 

Haioka’s remix of ‘Kiev’ is laced with sounds reminiscent of an angelic playground.  Discovering sequencers and quantized rhythms led Haioka to embark on his present career, enjoying mainstream success with Bremen, a dance-rock trio who rose to prominence during the 2000s, and underground success with his electronic duo “The Kah”. As a solo artist, he releases original works on Emerald & Doreen Recordings, as well as remixing tracks he finds compelling. Collaborating with a series of Japanese artists and Japanese Embassies, he shall be touring internationally in early 2015.  He encodes music with the rhythms and sounds of his daily life together with “concepts that are important to Japanese people, like space and stillness.”  Haioka’s interpretation of ‘Kiev’ is both delicate and decisive, a reflection of his cultural identity and expression of hope for the future of this beautiful city.

One of these remixers is José Luis Quezada Seguel, better known as Statickman, who is an indie dance, electro and nu-disco music producer based in Santiago, Chile who has preserved the beauty of Ummagma's 'Kiev' whilst creating his own stunning soundscape.  “With remixes, I let it flow from the voices or the melody of the original track" He explains. "I always try to run from original ideas and deliver new visions of their starting point."  Statickman defines his creative output as a journey through time in which he connects to modern music from a retro viewpoint, describing it as “the truest style of science fiction”.
 
For over 13 years, Statickman has been experimenting and translating his ideas by following in the best traditions of masters such as Giorgio Moroder, Yaz (Yazoo), Erasure, Kraftwerk, Patrick Cowley, Visage, Depeche Mode, and Jean Michel Jarre, with musical styles spanning from the 70s to the 90s. He strives to take his audiences along with him on his musical journeys. "Disco, electro, synth wave, some times with cyber punk touch, these are always gradual starting very dainty, trying to recreate an atmosphere full of good vibes and gradually come up till get a cruise speed that allows the audience to trip anywhere.”

Since bursting onto the music scene in 2012, they have made a significant impact on the underground music scene. Canadian-Ukrainian duo Ummagma have blazed quite a trail for themselves in their short history. Dreampop duo Ummagma presents the spacey ambient track 'Galacticon', focusing on the ethereal element.  This is perhaps the dreamiest and most innocent of all tracks on our latest EP, likely connected to the fact that it was written under the simplest of conditions, compared to the multi-layered way we usually write music," explains Ummagma vocalist Shauna McLarnon. "Now that we're based in Peterborough, Ukraine seems a world away but it still inspired great things for us and it will always be in our hearts. But I think Canada gave us the head space we needed in order to pull off our latest EP".

In December, Ummagma released their new 'Frequency' EP, featuring five original tracks and three remixes of 'Lama' by several legendary artists, including Cocteau Twins kingpin Robin Guthrie and Malcolm Holmes of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, both of whom bring their signature sound to the mix.

This EP follows their two debut LPs 'Ummagma' and 'Antigravity', released simultaneously in 2012. The album takes the listener through a cosmic yet introspective dreampop and ambient journey, tinged with shoegaze and synthpop flair. After relocating from Ukraine to Canada, 'Frequency' was the creative output of a search for optimism that helped the band put the current war behind them and to find new ground. It explores such themes as space and distance, timelessness, escapism, and the search for tranquility.

The band's sound is reminiscent of early 4AD early output with hues of Cocteau Twins, David Sylvian, Mike Oldfield, Vangelis and Stereolab. Comprised of Shauna McLarnon and Alexander Kretov, they hail from Whitehorse, Canada and Kremenets, Ukraine respectively. Having first met in the centre of Moscow, they moved to Ukraine during the Orange Revolution but now call Peterborough, Canada home.

Ummagma previously won the 2013 Alternative Eurovision on Amazing Radio, representing Ukraine, and has been featured in Rolling Stone Russia, BBC6 Music, national Radio 3 in Spain, Electronic Sound Magazine, Louderthanwar, Impose Magazine, The Examiner, Noisey Brazil and Northern Transmissions. The 'Frequency' EP features in 30+ ‘Best of 2015' charts and was named the Top Release of 2015 by Stereo Embers Magazine and Dreampop Album of the Year by The Record Stache.

Ummagma is comprised of Shauna McLarnon and Alexander Kretov. On this track, Ummagma unveils the shimmery glow of otherworldly delicacy, full of layered yet decipherable lyrics, sway and palpable electronic sounds. Reaching a more confident spot than before, this is Ummagma stripped of some of the devices the band formerly cloaked their sound in, offering up a beautiful yet different shade of melancholy than on previous releases. Paradoxically, the duo seemingly find equilibrium as they ponder the passing of time and detriment of inactivity.
 
Rudy Tambala of A.R.Kane lends his hallmark oceanic dream-space twist to this track with a kickback to his ‘69’ album, evident even from the title ‘Mix 69 Style’, recalling such classic tracks as “Baby Milk Snatcher” and “Spermwhale Trip Over”.
 
Back in the 1980s, A.R.Kane was the first to coin the term 'dream pop', referring to the music they make. They went on to influence everyone from My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive to Andrew Weatherall - whose long-running night A Love From Outer Space derives its name from their seminal 1989 track. They also were an important progenitor of shoegaze, trip hop, acid house and post-rock. Widely recognized as one of the most influential bands of their era, they laid ground for many musical genres that came to dominate the alternative music scene. AllMusic describes A.R.Kane as “the most criminally under-recognized band of their era”. The Guardian calls their work “some of the 80’s most extraordinary music”.
 
A.R.Kane and Ummagma have been enjoying a budding friendship over the past year surrounding their involvement with shoegaze indie legends The Veldt. Together they decided to put a little something together as a gift for this festive season.

After Robin Guthrie heard their track ‘Lama’, which originally appeared on the band’s debut album ‘Antigravity’, mutual friends put the band and the Cocteau Twins multi-instrumentalist in touch. The result is this wonderful new version of the song, which sees him not only re-arrange and re-mix the song but also add his own guitar parts into the mix.
 
Ummagma are a band whose unlikely back story matches and perfectly explains their mercurial music. Shauna McLarnon, a vocalist from the Yukon wilderness and Alexander Kretov, a multi-instrumentalist from small town Ukraine, met in the suburban sprawl of Moscow after pursuing many solo adventures and exploring unusual pathways. Bonding over their shared musical interests as much as their divergent musical backgrounds, Ummagma began as an affair with love and sound, their relationship soon developing into both a musical and factual marriage.
 
‘Lama’ exists in an alternate dimension of ambient drifts and sonic textures that wash over you in gentle waves and then recede back into a sonorous, twilight world of fading vapour trails of sound and vocals, seemingly found between reality and possibility. This is a sound that Guthrie and his fellow Cocteau Twins helped to pioneer and evolve throughout the 80’s – a sound that still informs much of his work, though here, his trademark feedback drenched guitar sound is used more to shimmer rather than shatter, to chime rather than slash.
 
Ummagma ‘LCD’ involves not only one, but two legendary musicians, the other being maverick electronic musician Dean Garcia of Curve fame.
 
“I grew up listening to Cocteau Twins, Curve, and so many bands from the 4AD and Creation labels, and then later introduced them to my husband. He learned of them late, having been born in the USSR. We feel incredibly honoured that Robin Guthrie and Dean Garcia have shaped several of our tracks as they personally envision them,” says Shauna McLarnon.
 
As a calling card for the four-track EP to follow, ‘Lama’ is a perfect sonic snapshot, capturing the bands core sound, their ambient heart, and the often smoke-like musical sculptures they create. Dream pop, it would seem, is deliciously back on the menu. 
 
The accompanying video was directed by award winning Brazilian videographer Dimitry Uziel and produced by Coisas Que Pairam. Featuring model Ka Uziel and himself, this was filmed in and near San Paolo, Brazil.
 
Ummagma ‘LCD’ will be released on September 15 via Label Obscura (digital, cassette) and Somewherecold Records (CD), and is already available for pre-order on the duo’s Bandcamp.

Ummagma combines their love of indie rock, synthpop and electronica to create “dreamgaze” power pop. In these two tracks, stunning hypnotic vocals and lush blissed-out resonance create a sonic launching pad to the galaxy or the universe within while getting your groove on. In "Rotation", this occurs on waves of bombastic synths, and in “Live and Let Die”, epic guitar riffs lace with magnetic drumbeats to stage an astonishing dreampop fest. Indie pop electronic rock duo Ummagma has announced their new album 'Compass', to be released on July 26 via Manchester-based label Leonard Skully Records. Their third long-play, this is the duo's first album in seven years and also the first time the band is releasing a record on vinyl. Ahead of this album, they present the 'High Day' single, a song about reflection on how short life really is and the need for reconcilation before it's too late.

Formed in Moscow in 2003, McLarnon hails from the Yukon Territory in northern Canada while Kretov is originally from western Ukraine. Now based in Ontario, the couple completed this album over five years and multiple moves, ultimately hauling their studio with them across the Atlantic and setting up all over again. With such transience in the real world, how could their sonic world reflect anything other than the same fluidity and movement?

"High Day was inspired by a stupid argument we had as a couple. I don't even recall what it was about, but it was frivolous and I conscientiously chose to stay mad at Alex for a few days, carrying around this negativity with me. As we sat in separate towns, it dawned on me that it could be that way - we could be separated permanently - if we don't just learn to let go of what is not important. I wrote this song and sang it to him. We got past our pride really soon and moved on. Music can be such a healing force," says Shauna McLarnon.

This single follows 'Caravan', which was released with b-side 'Ty i Ya', with Alexander Kretov performing in his native Ukrainian language. This is the band's first single released in a language other than English, stepping beyond the confines of past songwriting limits.

Comprised of 12 tracks with a bonus track ('Bouquet') offered for the digital version, 'Compass' is beguiling in its post-genre nature. It is an album of grace and change, of familiarity and exploration, of emotion and euphoria, of sky-scraping cinematic highs and intimate and intriguing lows. This is the sound of a band allowing themselves to jump creative divides, to kick down musical barriers, and rip up the rule book or perhaps just ignore the fact that there ever was one in the first place.

This forward thinking collection of songs is not bound to fad nor fashion, time or place. Every shimmering dreamscape found here is balanced with more robust and driven grooves, sometimes even within the same song. 'Otherwise' projects a drifting, woozy platform through which they thread reggae infusions and delicate distant Spanish guitars into something sultry and solid yet ethereal and chameleon-like. 'Galicticon' hints at Vangelis-inspired soundtracks, 'LCD' is a strident rock urge, warped and woven with strange musical motifs and gorgeous glitches, and 'Bouquet' is an otherworldly slice of balladry. 

This record follows on the trail of their ‘LCD’ EP with Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Dean Garcia (Curve), and 'Winter Tale' EP with 4AD dreampop pioneer A.R.Kane. Both of these were released in 2017.

They say you can tell a lot about someone by the company that they keep, and the same holds true for a band. Ummagma's collaborations speak volumes. Indie pop electronic rock duo Ummagma have announced their new album 'Compass', to be released via Manchester-based label Leonard Skully Records. Their third long-play, this is the duo's first album in seven years and also the first time the band is releasing a record on vinyl.

Ahead of this album, they present the 'Caravan' single, along with a special B-side 'Ty i Ya'. The title track is an invigorating pop rock anthem inspired by the musicians' own journeys and infused with Carpathian gammas and percussion.

'Ty i Ya' is a vibe-injected upbeat track, with infectious Daft Punk-esque bassline, that Alexander Kretov composed and performs in his native Ukrainian language. This is the first single Ummagma has ever released in a language other than English, stepping beyond the confines of past songwriting limits.

"Caravan is about a personal journey - one that begins in the mind before any borders have even been crossed," says Ummagma vocalist Shauna McLarnon. "The trip is so much better when you truly want to be part of it. You map your own destiny in many ways and dreaming is a great place to begin."

The 'Compass' LP is beguiling in its post-genre nature. It is an album of grace and change, of familiarity and exploration, of emotion and euphoria, of sky-scraping cinematic highs and intimate and intriguing lows. This is the sound of a band allowing themselves to jump creative divides, to kick down musical barriers, and rip up the rule book or perhaps just ignore the fact that there ever was one in the first place.

Formed in Moscow in 2003, McLarnon hails from northern Canada while Kretov is originally from western Ukraine. Now based in Peterborough, Ontario, the couple completed this album over the course of five years and multiple moves, ultimately hauling their studio with them across the Atlantic and setting up all over again. With such transience in the real world, how could their sonic world reflect anything other than the same fluidity and movement?

This record follows on the trail of their ‘LCD’ EP with Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Dean Garcia (Curve), and 'Winter Tale' EP with 4AD dreampop pioneer A.R.Kane. Both of these were released in 2017.

Ummagma - Lama (Ian Baird Remix)

Ummagma is an eclectic potpourri of dreampop, indie rock, electronica, post-rock, ethereal wave, space rock, post-punk, ambient and shoegaze. Their musical play is full of resonance, beats, rhythm and vocals ranging from gossamer to deadpan over a bed of intriguing soundscapes. Ummagma began as an affair of love and sound. Band members Alexx Kretov and Shauna McLarnon met in Moscow while soul searching, their relationship ultimately developing into a marriage and the musical partnership we know today as Ummagma. 

Ummagma debuted on the music scene in 2012, simultaneously releasing two debut albums. In the past few years, Ummagma has released several EPs involving several genuine music icons, including Dean Garcia (CURVE), Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), Rudy Tambala (A.R.Kane), and Malcolm Holmes (OMD).

Ummagma won the 2013 Alternative Eurovision on Britain's Amazing Radio (representing Ukraine amongst 23 countries), as well as numerous independent music video awards. They have been featured in Rolling Stone Russia and Rolling Stone Italia. Ummagma also co-wrote, produced and performed on the 2014 debut Sounds of Sputnik EP, which saw them working with Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver, Brian Jonestown Massacre) and Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn, Lords of Acid). This album held in the CMJ charts for 7 weeks and earned them a Jagermeister Music Award (Russia's most prestigious indie music award).
