Shapednoise is Italian producer Nino Pedone, and over the last few years he’s built a name for himself issuing music that bridges the gap between the basement and the club. Noise and techno are proven bedfellows at this point (for better or for worse), but Pedone pushes harder and further, and ‘Different Selves’, as the title suggests, is his most diverse and challenging work to date.
Fusing the industrial grind of early Godflesh (Justin K. Broadrick even makes an appearance on opening track ‘Enlightenment’) with the raw power of mid 90s D&B, the visceral pleasure of early grime and the ominous scrape of dark ambient, Shapednoise navigates unfamiliar territory expertly.

Whether traversing beatless outworld landscapes with ’Travels in the Universe of the Soul’ or assaulting the senses with the acidic, rhythmic blast of ‘Heart Energy Shape’ there’s a sense that Shapednoise is exploring his own boundaries.

‘Different Selves’ is a challenging, unruly selection of tracks; not a deconstruction of club music, but an amplification, blowing every sound out to near cacophony. the result is truly explosive.

Exclusive new EVAC tune written for the Rewire Vinyl Boxset/Exhibition. The project is a collaborative release by Andrea Parker's Touchin' Bass label and the Gamma Proforma art collective. It's a seriously cool project and I'm proud to have been a part of it!

‘Rewire - Part A’ is a digital album of 13 tracks that came about through a Kickstarter project curated by Rob Swain of Gamma Proforma and Andrea Parker of Touchin’ Bass featuring tracks from Cristian Vogel, Luke Vibert, Arovane, Kero, Einoma, EVAC, Andrea Parker & Daz Quayle, Plaster, Quinoline Yellow, Bogger, Dalglish, Ed Devane and Clatterbox.

In 2014, an international line up of visual artists created works which were interpreted sonically by audio artists, effectively reversing the common record model where the artist creates an image to capture the mood of the music. The art and interpretations were exhibited at The Gamma Transport Division during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The visual works came from a curated line up of abstract urban artists from Gamma Proforma. The audio artists were selected from the vein of experimental electronic music.

Having always wanted to curate, collaborate and combine all things art and electronics this project was the perfect solution. The experience of viewing a painting can be altered profoundly when combined with sound, yet it's rarely presented this way. Rewire is all about pictures of sound, a collection that sought to challenge the audio artists, giving them a reason to write. Listening to each interpretation is like stepping into the art, immersing yourself and not wanting to come back to reality.

With only a year following on from the release of her second album ‘Awake But Always Dreaming’ to widespread acclaim (Voted No.1 Album Of the Year – Electronic Sound Magazine), ‘Mary Casio: Journey to Cassiopeia’, explores one person's journey to outer space, by recounting the story of an unknown, elderly, pioneering, electronic musical stargazer and her lifelong dream to leave her terraced home in the mining town of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, to see Cassiopeia for herself. With artwork by Grammy award winning designer Jonathan Barnbrook (David Bowie collaborator on albums ‘Blackstar’ and ‘The Next Day’ ) and the complete brass band and rhythm section recorded live on location in The Barnsley Civic Theatre with Peter Gabriel’s Real World studio team, this exclusive album combines Peel’s detailed, analogue synth layered production and her expressive flair for performance with ‘Tubular Brass’, featuring the top UK championship brass band players. It’s a wholly unique, collaborative sound and seemingly, a first of it’s kind both live and on record. 

At the close of the album’s final song ‘The Planet of Passed Souls’, tutti brass jostle with the hiss and crackle of a 78rpm record. An emotionally charged, scratchy sample taken from a 1928 recording of Peel’s own choirboy grandfather in Manchester Cathedral leaves the listener questioning the reality of Mary’s connection with the stars… Did she ever make it to Cassiopeia? Is this all a daydream as she sits in a back garden shed tinkering with electronics and her telescope? Or maybe this is her final breath as her mind and body pass into another realm of life? Is this science or fantasy? And how much is there really a division between the two?

This Eternal Vanishing

Mika Vainio and Franck Vigroux’s Peau Froide, Léger Soleil was a dense and complex record, a collection of sonic sculptures forged in the heavy tonal matter. It was the product of a lengthy creative process, articulated through studio sessions and live performances. The result was a huge amount of material that the duo actually decided to partition into more than one release, the album being the first in line.
The new 6-tracker EP Ignis makes for the first posthumous release from the two producers, after the untimely passing of Vainio in 2017. As a second chapter, it differentiates itself from the first
offering by including more spacious tracks and somber drones, driven by a never-resolved tension that infects every bit of sound, morphing from the horrific ambient of “Ne te retourne pas” to the unquiet sine wave meditations of “Un peu après le solei” to the harsh noises of closing track “Feux”. Standing out is the relentless drum barrage of “Luxure”: a frantic descent into a neverending percussive maelstrom.
The overall quality of these six compositions makes Ignis stand out as a testament to the collaboration between two of the bravest explorers of sound to ever grace the European scene and to the genius and creativity of the one and only Mika Vainio.

Casablanca Flamethrower deals with alternative histories. About hidden allied war crimes. The wild and ferocious airborne divisions once they passed the beachhead and their fateful encounters with civilians. About forgotten victims and known memorials. We deal here with the memorials we see that were created after the fact. By ’hiding what is known’ we see another history, another past... a past without a future!
