With Vivarium, Vienna-based live duo Mitra present their debut release and their first contribution to IO Records. Known for their immersive per- formances and site-responsive sound explorations, Mitra translate the raw intensity and spatial awareness of their live practice into a studio recording for the very first time. 
The seven-track EP unfolds as a carefully composed sonic ecosystem. Each piece functions as a distinct organism within a living structure, contributing to a sound world that feels both precise and unpredictable. Rooted in deep listening, low-end exploration, and rhythmic subtlety, Vivarium invites au- diences into an environment that is in constant transformation. 

Rather than relying on fixed arrangements or traditional song structures, the tracks evolve gradually. Textures shift, patterns emerge and dissolve, and moments of stillness meet waves of tension. While firmly grounded in experimental sound design, Vivarium also reveals a sense of physicality and movement. The duo’s background in their live act is present throughout, channeling the energy of their performances into compositions that retain their organic, tactile quality. 

Vivarium is more than a debut. It is an invitation to enter Mitra’s sonic world. It is a space shaped by intuition, presence, and the fluid relationship bet- ween listener, sound, and environment. With this release, Mitra opens a new chapter in their artistic trajectory, offering a compelling glimpse into the evolving potential of their sound.

About Mitra

Mitra is a live duo from Vienna, formed by Theodora Hergheligiu and Lukas Weinlein. Their project explores the relationship between sound, space, and perception, with a strong focus on real-time performance and improvisation. Their sound is rooted in experimental approaches and shaped by the direct interaction with the acoustic and physical characteristics of each space. Instead of relying on studio-based production, Mitra treat the live setting as their primary creative environment. Each set unfolds organically and re- sponds to the surrounding conditions, transforming the sound system into an active instrument. In contrast to traditional live setups, the DAW itself be- comes the central tool for composition and performance. It is not only used as a playback device, but as a responsive, sculptural instrument. Known musical structures are often broken down, reinterpreted, and reas- sembled into immersive sonic experiences. 

In 2025, Mitra release their debut on IO Records. The record is a direct extension of their live set and marks the first time their practice has been translated into a recorded format. Without losing the raw energy and open-ended nature of their performances, the release captures the essence of their sound in motion. While their roots lie in deep listening and abstract sound design, Mitra have also developed a more rhythm-oriented side. Their groove-based live sets fo- cus on repetition, physicality, and collective intensity, inviting audiences into a shared, bodily experience of sound. With a practice that challenges conventions and dissolves boundaries bet- ween listener and performer, Mitra continue to explore new sonic territories through a process that remains fluid, responsive, and alive.

@fieldrecords concludes its Waterworks trilogy with Kiso Three Rivers, a new full-length by Tokyo composer and sound artist @yui_onodera. Combining minimal instrumentation, spatial sound design, and field recordings, the album reflects on the confluence of the Kiso, Nagara, and Ibi rivers and the shared water engineering history of Japan and the Netherlands.
