Allie Mae Burroughs talks back to the historic narrative of this iconic portrait of her. 

Allie Mae Burroughs was a cotton tenant farmer in Alabama, United States, in the Great Depression. 

American documentary photographer Walker Evans, along with writer James Agee, went on assignment to document and photograph farmers and their families, like Allie Mae and her husband Floyd, in 1936.

Their photos and essays were published in the book, Let Us Praise Famous Men, and Evans' photograph of Allie Mae Burroughs came to be one of the most iconic images of the Depression.

In this audio story, Allie Mae reclaims her story... and shares a few secrets.

The little known story of a teacher of an activist night school on a NSW Aboriginal mission. His students changed Australian history.  

Thomas Shadrach James was born to indentured Indian labourers on the island of Mauritius.  

In 1881, he found his calling as a schoolteacher at Maloga Aboriginal Mission, on Yorta Yorta country in Australia.

The much loved Thomas Shadrach James was known as 'Grandpa James'. 

His students at Maloga and Cummeragunja missions became some of Australia's leading civil rights activists, including William Cooper, Sir Doug Nicholls, Margaret Tucker, Jack Patten and Bill Onus.  

Thomas Shadrach James shaped generations and is said to have made the Yorta Yorta nation what it is today.
