'Dawning On' is Australian, Berlin-based guitarist Julia Reidy’s Slip debut: a razor-sharp précis of pent-up, blazing melancholy on a lone 12-string guitar.

Reidy’s playing is lucid and poised, teasing out elegant inflections from half-melodies, rugged strums, and curious tunings. Her compositions are lingering streams: barely-shackled attacks give way to introspective arpeggiations before resurging again, all spurred on by a yearning, nervous energy. 

With the album’s single-track A-side clocking in at just under half-an-hour, this is by some measure Julia’s most comprehensive solo statement to date, and a luxurious listen which revels in the 12-string’s generous resonance. For our money, it’s up there with the finest work of her fellow Aussies The Necks, Anthony Pateras, and Jon Rose. 

'Dawning On' [SLP033] is available on red C65 tape or CD, with download. It comes packaged with a double-sided fold-out A3 poster with artwork by Suze Whaites. Recorded by Owen Roberts and Giulherme Fill. Mastered by Joe Talia. Tapes dubbed by Klaas Hübner.

David Fennessy on "Caruso (Gold is the sweat of the sun)" (2012)
 
Throughout the troubled production of his 1982 film Fitzcarraldo, set deep in the Peruvian jungle, the German filmmaker Werner Herzog kept vivid and shocking diaries which he published years later as the book ‘Conquest of the Useless’. I have become somewhat obsessed with these diaries recently and have begun work on a series of pieces drawing on different themes contained therein. This piece, ‘Caruso’, deals with the initial image, or dream which inspired Herzog to make the film in the first place.
 
“A vision had seized hold of me...of a large steamship scaling a hill under its own steam, working its way up a steep slope in the jungle, while above this natural landscape, which shatters the weak and the strong with equal ferocity, soars the voice of Caruso, silencing all the pain and all the voices of the primeval forest and drowning out all birdsong”.
 
In my piece, the guitar is enveloped by a ‘choir’ of Carusos whose influence is by turns obsessive, healing, overpowering and ultimately, silencing.
