The Equal Tempered Piano

If every tone of 7ET is split in half, the result is 14ET, a tuning which features Wide minor / Narrow Major 3rds and 6ths in addition to the normal complement of categorical diatonic intervals. This fugue in 3 voices uses the ambi-3rd in its chromatic subject, which is treated in inversion and augmentation. Written June 5-8, 2015.

10ET has no minor 3rd, and its Narrow Major 3rd at 360 cents sounds rather out of tune unless voiced carefully, or better yet combined with a 7th. Dominant harmonies sound great in this tuning because the Small minor 7th is very nearly 4:7 (hence, the Large Major Second is also near 7:8). These smooth sounds are made use of in the fugue subject, which expands to an octave leap via a French 6th chord arpeggiation. The 10ET circle of 5ths completes in 5 steps, and all episodes are based on this cycle with occasional chromaticism and augmented 6th cadences. Written June 15-17, 2015.

Präludium geschrieben 20./21. Juni 2020, Fuga 2./3. September 2019. Ich hatte ein anderes Präludium geschrieben, aber dann wurde mir klar, dass es nicht gut genug zu diesem Buch passte. Jetzt gibt es also noch ein neues Stück für das Projekt, das ich gerade fertiggestellt haben soll. [N.B. nun wieder mit noch ein paar kleinen Verbesserungen im Präludium.]

Dazu eine lustige Geschichte: Vor mehr als einem Monat bin ich mit
meinem zweiten Buch von 24 Präludien und Fugen fertig gewesen. So begann
ich mit dem Erstellen des Inhaltsverzeichnisses. Und siehe da, es gab
gar kein Präludium und keine Fuge in As-Dur! Ich hatte doch tatsächlich
vergessen, das Ding überhaupt zu schreiben.

Jetzt ist es also endlich komponiert. Und damit sollte das Projekt nun
(wirklich) abgeschlossen sein ... denke ich :)

This should be the final composition included in "The Equal Tempered Keyboard" project, which has been going on for the past 20 years (gasp). In this book, each equal division of the octave between 5 and 20 tones gets a prelude and fugue or two part invention. For 19ET I had written two pieces, but neither of them was a fugue or invention, rather the set was a "Prelude and Rondo". I decided that didn't fit the project well enough, so I wrote this short fugue yesterday (13. Sept. 2020) to replace the Rondo. Some remarks about each tuning will be included in the book. Those are not quite finished yet, but I plan to publish the book by the end of the year.
