Talofa Village originated in October 1966 by two brothers, Charles C and Arthur O Schwenke to cater for the needs of the youth of the L.D.S Pesega First Ward in which Arthur was a presiding Bishop and also to preserve the culture of the Polynesian people.
The establishment of the Talofa Village Entertainers was brought about partly with the idea of giving the youth of the village an opportunity to enjoy a worthwhile pastime, partly to show overseas visitors something of the traditional culture of Samoa.
The performance features typical Samoan singing, dancing and knife-dancing and its climax is the dance of the Taupou - the village virgin who is dressed in siapo (tapa) cloth, or in a dress of cotton leaves. The most striking feature of the apparel is the head-dress which consists of a wig of human hair. The hair is soaked in salt water to discolour it to a sepia-like colour. This is piled high on top of the girl's own hair, which has been tied into a tight knot on the top of her head. In front of teh wig there is a special head-dress of mirrors and brightly coloured feathers. The girl's face, like her body, is rubbed with coconut oil and the cheeks are marked with charcoal. On wrists and ankles she wears ti leaves. She comes on usually with the nifo oti (the tooth of death) spinning it with dexterity, like some of the male knife dancer.
Features of the performances are the traditional siva, which are original Samoan dances, called for a series of stylised hand and foot movements with the group singing an accompaniment, A good example of a siva song is "Samoa Sila Sila" which means "Watch what I am doing. Another dance is "Samoa Lo'u Atunu'u Pele", which celebrates Samoa as the beloved land of the people. Songs are used to accompany other activities, as in the case of the fishing song "Sua Mai Lepa Taie" sung by the women as they collect shellfish in the lagoon.
