לֹא שִׁכְחָה נְבַקֵּשׁ, וְהַנֵּס, אִם יָבוֹא, לֹא יַצִּיל,
כִּי היָה הַמָּגוֹר וְאֶת מִי עוֹד יִגְאַל הַמַּלְאָךְ,
תְּפִילָּתֵנוּ נָדַמָּה מִכְּבָר, הַיּוֹם הֶאֱפִיל,
אַל תִּסְלַח לָנוּ אֵל, אֵל מָלֵא רַחֲמִים, אַל תִּסְלַח!

הֲנוּכַל עוֹד בִּרְבוֹת הַיָּמִים לְהַבִּיט בְּעֵינֵי יְלָדֵינוּ
בְּחִיּוּךְ שֶׁנִּרְגַע וְקוֹרֵן בְּשַׁלְוַת-הֲתְּבוּנָה?
לֹא טָבַלְנוּ יָדֵינוּ בְּדָם, וְִהנֵּה הוּא דָבַק בְּיָדֵינוּ,
אֲשֵׁמִים וּכְפוּפִים נַעֲלֶה בִּשְׁלַבֵּי הַזִּקְנָה.

כשהחלו להגיע לארץ ולעולם ידיעות על פרוץ מלחמת העולם השנייה, כתבה המשוררת לאה גולדברג בעיתון השומר הצעיר ב-8 בספטמבר 1939: "רבים, רבים יתר על המידה, ניגשים אלי ושואלים – ובכן, מתי תתחילי לכתוב שירי מלחמה? השיבותי להם, אל תדאגו לתוצרת הזאת, יספקוה במידה רבה עד מאוד. היא גם תביא רווחים. אך אני? לא!"
על דפי אותו העיתון, התווכחו בהמשך שני ענקי השירה, גולדברג ואלתרמן, על תפקיד השירה והמשוררים בעת מלחמה, וגולדברג כתבה:
"המשורר הוא האיש, אשר בימי מלחמה אסור ואסור לו לשכחו את הערכים האמתיים של החיים", טענה גולדברג. "לא רק היתר הוא למשורר לכתוב בימי מלחמה שיר אהבה, אלא הכרח משום שגם בימי מלחמה רב ערכה של האהבה מערך הרצח. לא זכות בלבד היא למשורר בימות הזוועה לשיר שירו לטבע, לאילנות הפורחים, לילדים היודעים לצחוק, אלא חובה. החובה להזכיר לאדם, כי עדיין אדם הוא, כי קיימים בעולם אותם הערכים הפשוטים והנצחיים העושים את החיים ליקרים יותר, את המוות למושלם יותר, את המוות ולא את הרצח".
שלוש שנים אחר כך, ב-23 באפריל 1943, לפני 80 שנים, פרסמה גולדברג בעיתון 'דבר' את השיר "על האשם". היא החליטה לא לפרסם את השיר באף אחד מספריה, אלא רק בעיתון.
ברבות השנים, נכלל השיר בכל כתביה, בהוצאת הקיבוץ המאוחד.

David Gilmour said: “Towards the end of my mother’s life, when she was suffering from dementia, there was a brief crossover period of about 9 months, when she was alive and my daughter was newly born: this song is a musing on that time. Specifically it refers to a walk in the park where my mother was ‘seeing’ pictures, or ‘faces of stone’, hanging in the trees.”
