Friend sets a text of the same name by Ryûsei Hasegawa (Eng. Tr. Hiroaki Sato) and random reorderings of its word content. We hear these reorderings delivered in a variety of modes (e.g. speech, recitation) against the text presented in the correct order, which is sung. In this way we hear multiple alternate versions of the piece presented simultaneously.

Kulning ("calling") is a type of European herding call used by women to bring livestock - cows, goats, etc - down from mountainous grazing pastures at the end of the day. Other uses of the extended vocal technique include scaring off predators and communicating with neighboring farmers across remote alpine regions.

This sketch was developed in collaboration with Quatuor Bozzini during their spring 2018 Vancouver Composers Lab.
