This story was conceived 40 years ago with the invention of the Roland 808 Drum Machine in 1980.

Rapid & Solid, fast & frantic, the electro beat is the sound of the city as stimulating as the urban jungle that spawned it.

To say electro was influential would be an understatement, electro changed the world, the music, the graffiti art, the fashion and the arcade video games were electronic and futuristic, it didn’t exclude anyone if you were black or white, male or female. Electro comes from the word electronic, electro music is like disco and funk warped into hyperspace, it’s the roots of electronic music we know today.

The first time I saw someone breakdance in real life was in high school early 80s. Jimmy was the only kid in the entire school who knew how to break and pop it looked like something from outer space. (Popin and lockin is a form of robot dance like an electric shock has gone through your body). We spent our youth practising to break, pop and lock at PCYC Wolloomooloo, we would get together after school and train. We taught each other and created our own signature moves. We also practised breakin at Rap City on George Street it helped keep kids out of trouble.

We battled our breakdance moves with our ghetto blaster outside Hoyts George Street and around Circular Quay on a piece of lino my Grandad bought us from Marrickville Mitre 10 hardware store.  

The mixtapes we danced to I made from recording Tim Ritchie’s radio show on Double-J. I would stay up late to record the show, then using 3 x cassette players two for playing and one for recording I would lock myself in my cupboard because it was soundproof like a vocal booth and mix our own mixtapes. 

I entered a breakdance competition held by Hoyts George Street as a promo for ‘Breakdance’ the movie. A couple of the actors/dancers from the movie came and danced (Kelly and Popin Pete)  but we were there to see Turbo do his famous broom dance unfortunately he wasn’t part of the tour.

The breakdance phenomenon lasted from 82 to 85 then other sounds began to emerge like house music.  Breakdancing is still relevant today with new dance moves being introduced all the time and now an official Olympic sport.

If the Face Magazine 1984 included a mixtape this would be it. I’ve mixed and edited the dub version and bonus beats you normally find on the B-side of the 12inch record. One of the most difficult genres to beat mix because the click track went all over the place.   The invention of the direct drive turntable made by Technics took Dj scratching to a higher level, nearly every song featured a ‘scratching solo’. Music producers like Arthur Baker, Herbie Hancock and John Rocca mastered the art of voice sampling, pitching and beat repeat, they pushed music instruments to the edge with it came a style and an attitude.

Electro 82 - 85 DJ Abel Toro

Abel has been synonymous with the electronic music scene from day one. The Sydney-born DJ of Spanish origin first came to our attention in the 90’s. Toro has played alongside The Chemical Brothers and Primal Scream. As a music producer/remixer, his credits include Sophie Monk (Sydney), Olli Wisdom (Space Tribe), Funk D’Void (UK) and Paul Mac (Sydney).

Abel is renowned for his unique style of music and passion at what he does. His ability to play a diverse range of music sees him DJ at festivals and clubs around the country and overseas. 

Most recently Abel has performed a string of gigs in Sydney, Byron Bay, Gold Coast and Brisbane. Toro has also been busy in the studio writing and releasing new material on European labels ‘Trippy Code Records’ and ‘Furrier Records’. With more new music set to be released in 2023.
