Wampís of Guayabal & Aboutface - Los Bosquesinos (People of the Forests)

An intercultural collaboration with the Indigenous Wampís forest community living in the Peruvian Amazon: exploring evocative soundscapes and ancient nampet songs in the Wampís Territory, to support indigenous-led conservation, and initiatives against illegal deforestation and acts of ecocide.

100% of all sales revenues from this release will directly go to the Wampís to protect their rainforest territory. 

During a month living with the Wampís in the Amazon Rainforest, Aboutface and the Wampis community collaboratively captured field-recordings, music instrumentation and traditional Wampis Nampets – ancient songs sung from the perspective of animals living in their rainforest environment.

These recordings then informed 4 improvised performances to articulate the story of the 4 Nampet songs, from within the habitat of each animal, to depict nature and culture as inseparable, and to propose that humanity is not exclusive to humans, but a multinaturalist characteristic available to all living organisms.

°s is inspired by patterns in urban nature: language; behaviour; seasons, and along with the poem, explores the cyclical psychological peaks and troughs experienced during a pandemic. Live multi-instrumental improvisations apply the fibonacci sequence to create melodies and rhythms that mimic fractal patterns in nature, and are situated within binaural field recordings captured during essential travel in the first pandemic lockdown.

“Zan, Zendegi, Azadi” (meaning “Woman, Life, Freedom”), initially a Kurdish motto, زن زندگی آزادی has become the chant of current protests in Iran. Women bravely have risked their lives on the streets to fight against patriarchy, harassment, and servitude to a fascist system.

For this, I am presenting a new moniker – Eca_Tuoba, who is a non-binary spirit who resides in the polarity-space of Aboutface. They are the vengeance arm of universal nature that becomes manifested in the physical realm, following a build up of toxic human behaviour that disrupts the delicate balance between light and dark energy.

The set includes 2 upcoming Aboutface tracks which will be my next release on Coordinates also called Zan, Zendegi, Azadi. The release will include 3 tracks, named after the words of protest in the EP title,  and will include a remix from an artist I’ve loved for sometime, @surgeonsgirl.

The release will be on a handmade LTD stone USB with ‘Mahsa' (مهسا) on the stones in Farsi. Mahsa Amini is a 22-year-old Iranian of Kurdish origin who had been arrested for allegedly breaching the Islamic dress code for women and died in suspicious circumstances whilst in custody. This was the catalyst for the mass public protests that has also led to the deaths of other young women and girls. Profits from the release will be split between various Irainian related human rights organisations.

Aboutface Presents– Eca Tuoba [Free Iran]

Aboutface is back live on Netil Radio with Season 2 EP 2 of his conceptual Live/DJ performance show ‘An Ocean of Ink in a Single Drop’. Aboutface presents a conceptual performance called: Pensée Sculpture (mind sculpture), which used sound, music and spoken word (in French) to create abstract worlds of art in our minds 🌀🌀🌀💙😵‍💫💙🌀🌀🌀.This performance will be presented by Le Sculpteur d’esprit (The mind sculptor). This performance was orginally developed for Cycardia festival, Nantes, France 20-5-23. Voice over and translation by Noemie Decaen. Time to enter the manifold!

Pensée Sculpture 1. The sunflower - Le tournesol

‘You have passed through the prism into an unknown world, you are met by a giant sunflower head, seeds spiralling in a fractal pattern with orange and red hues swirling like currents in a tidal rock pool. You gently glide towards the flower head which now extends to as far as you can see. You are now so close that each geometrically separated seed is passing you by as if you were flying over a vast golden pine forest. There is a gravitational force pulling you towards a hole in the centre of the flower head, leading you into a vast black space filled with streams of fine blue pollen swirling like starling murmurations. Separate strands of the pollen begin to weave together to slowly reveal sections of a giant human body. Almost translucent like fine satin chiffon, the pollen begins to form bones, muscles, organs and limbs, to reveal a monolithic body with no head or hands. You look down and realise that this body is actually your own, and are witnessing the pollen gently completing your arms with hands and fingers, like a coastal breeze sculpting the fine sand into paint stroked dunes.

‘Close your eyes. From the darkness, a transparent circular prism appears in the distance, with its soft outlines refracting all colours from the spectrum. As you gently glide closer, you notice an unfamiliar world through the other side of the prism, this is the portal to your thought sculpture (Pensée Sculpture) number 3.

‘You have passed through the prism into an unknown world, and find yourself gliding through an underground passage with pearl white lattice honeycomb walls, which shimmer with refracted light when you divert your glaze suddenly. You come to a halt in an oval shaped chamber with a metal sculpture in the centre, there is a faint vibrating sound which seems to be coming from the honeycomb walls. You move closer to the object and notice that it is made from an unfamiliar alloy which looks like a crystalline metal draped in a copper coloured moss. You step backwards from the object to view it from a more distant perspective.
It is a 3 dimensional word written in an unfamiliar language. Your body rushes with a warm rush, and you are certain that this is both ancient and some form of advanced technology.’

A live performance with 4 sequences that reflect 4 perspectives of a white lily pond flower, increasing in magnification, to articulate the trials and tribulations of inflorescence - the blooming of a flower, as a metaphor of the pain, adversity and growth experienced by humanity. Centred around music harvested from sanskrit mantra meditation - repeating ancient sanskrit mantras until melodies appear, then are translated to instruments. Video art and animations projected onto a moving human body, becoming more vivid as it gets darker/closer in magnification of the white pond lily. Originally developed and performed at Freerotation Festival, 5th Jul 2024.

My first show of my new residency on @1btnradio, 6pm-8pm UK (7-9pm CET), 101.4FM in Brighton or via 1BTN.FM online. Tonight is dedicated to the maverick fox and one of my oldest and best friends, Alex aka ‘Aslam’, who has left his incarnate– The physical world failed you my friend, but the energetic one welcomes you back.

In honour of our time together trying to blend disparate genres in the flat we shared in the Pembury estate, Hackney. This show is a sonic collage of music, poetry, and edits with no boundaries, a bit like the good soul himself.

This is the first project of its kind in Wampís history and contains sound recordings of biodiversity that no longer exist due to deforestation.

Indigenous-managed Amazonian rainforests sequester around 340 million tonnes of CO₂ each year—equivalent to the UK’s annual fossil fuel emissions. In stark contrast, non-Indigenous-controlled forests have become sources of carbon emissions, therefore accelerating our global climate crises. Among the vital custodians of these precious ecosystems are the Wampís people, who protect 1.3 m ha of precious rainforest territory currently being decimated by mining for gold. This devastating practice is currently decimating Wampís territory, destroying their river habitats, leaving toxic methylmercury pollution that strips all biodiversity, contaminates the food chain, and causes widespread harm.
 
100% of all sales revenues from this release will directly go to the Wampís to protect their rainforest territory, to fund Wampís-led eco-initiatives against illegal mining, alongside ways to preserve Wampís cultural heritage– embedded in their songs, art and crafts, central to their conservation of their territory called The Iña Wampisti Nunke: A system of life that encompasses reciprocal relationships between humans, plants, animals, and spirits, central to the harmony of all its multi-dimensional ecology– which they term Tarimat Pujut.

A live improvised conceptual performance that explores the intersection between a human cohabiting bat colony in the Collegiate Church of Holy Trinity Tattershall,  and the ancient mayan culture of the Zinacantecs - the mayan agricultural community who in their native tongue refer to their land as - Sot’s’lab (Land of Bats).

A two-part performance, augmented oil painting and mixed media collage that explores the relationship between technology and nature, using the conceptual transposition of Boolean logic gates used in circuitry, onto the rugged natural landscape of the Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall, with an aim to propose two scenarios of the future: how increased automation and technological advances may lead to conservational utopia, or the decline of the ecological environment and subsequent synthesis of nature.

Inspired by a 3 month period recording and interpreting dreams, the performance uses glacier sounds recorded on Polar expedition c/o the Alfred Wegener Institute – a centre for polar and marine research, alongside sections of dream prose to create a live improvised performance that evokes the inter-connectivity between environmental change, and the collective subconscious. Recorded live at Freerotation 2019.
