It’s not often we’ve had the opportunity to invite a creative along who really personifies the term in its most wholesome form. Back in his hometown of Philadelphia, residents may recognise him as the founder and creative director of BWC Garments, but following a landmark episode on @soulection radio, Joshua Lang’s profile as a rising DJ with a penchant for soulful house and disco became impossible to overlook.

With a love for all things groovy and feelgood, the Philly native embodies the aforementioned in a 60+ minute mix that effortlessly weaves through a passionate and euphoric journey, slotting classic warm vocals in amongst lesser-known deep basslines for a house and disco soundtrack that works as well for daytime listening as it does for a pre-party warm up.

As we officially integrate into life under quarantine, now more than ever it feels right to bring back the guest mix series, and showcase one of our favourite artists from the Future Beats scene to profile in the process.

Since emerging as one of the breakout stars of the Soundcloud communities boundary-free beats scene, Ohio-based KMB has embodied and fused the best elements from R&B, Hip-Hop and House to carve out an unmistakable brand of Future Beats thats rightly seen the beatmaker recognised as one of the brightest talents in the scene.

His latest project, ‘WHATYOUTHINKIN Vol. 2’ which dropped last month, expands on the hallmarks of his heterogeneous sound, flipping classic samples and using R&B-indebted hooks to irresistible, dancefloor-ready effect. The edit pack weaves and bobs its way through a multitude of vibes, – ‘Calling All Girls’ takes the classic 2003 ATL jam and layers it with a swinging groove and drum flow Kaytra would be proud of, whilst ‘freecare’ adds a similarly melodic bounce and kicks to Mick Jenkins’ exceptional Black Milk original ‘Carefree’ for another instantly club-ready refix.

Having had his earliest taste in production as early as 4 years old, it wasn’t until the equally tender age of 10 – his Dad dropped a copy of FL Studio on his lap, that he had his first real opportunity to cook up a beat and begin to carve out the sultry and smoother tracks he initially gained notoriety for. In that time whilst his sound has grown, one consistent element that’s followed is the Colombus-residents love for Brandy, having paid his respects with countless edits including ‘down?’, ‘tribulation’ and ‘never say never’ barely scratching the surface of how deep his respect for the R&B Queen goes.

In his About To Blow Mix, KMB doubles down on that lush soundscape, turning up the heat for a soulful and feelgood 30 minute blend of R&B jams, old and new.“Get ready to groove.” KMB told us when we asked what to expect: “This mix features a gang of my favourite tracks to keep you two-stepping!”

Hailing from the port city of Osaka, Jun Tanaka is playing a defining role in leading the way as a key player in the world of future beats, with fun and care-free club edits at the forefront. An unwavering fan of beat music, hip-hop, r&b, afrobeats and bailé amongst others, Tanaka’s own productions are the product of his influences, with Amsterdam’s all-conquering contingent of producers – Jarreau Vandal and Jaël to name a few – a key source of inspiration, with Joe Kay’s LA-collective Soulection educating him on the boundary-free fun of future beats music, he tells us.

Fresh off dropping yet another silky and vibrant ‘Club Edit Pack’, Jun has put together the latest episode in our guest mix series, a typically irresistible blend of future beats, afrobeats, r&b, club and beyond. Fitting a flurry of self-produced edits alongside flips from the likes of Jengi, Hasan Insane, Zikomo and Cookin’ Soul across 60 wide-ranging minutes, that shows his versatility and ability to summon up feelgood, dancefloor ready euphoria that works for any time of the day.

🔊  So Future Sounds is a bi-weekly mix series that invites the most plugged in DJs to give you a taster of the sounds that represent their world.

🔌This mix comes from Amsterdam in the Netherlands from a DJ and producer called Melle, who, like the most of us is currently at home in quarantine. Melle started DJing in 2015 and made his first edits a year later. His style is heavily influenced by SoundCloud, and like us here at So Future - he’s not too concerned with giving his sound a specific genre label. This mix features a selection of what Melle is feeling right now, along with a few of his own mashups and edits. Enjoy.

Felix B. Nowak, better known as Jon Gravy, is one of Austria’s many highly skilled but – until recently – little known musical talents. 

A leading archetype of the thriving electronic underground scene of Vienna, the DJ and musician started producing at the early age of 17, inspired by the soul music of his fathers vinyl collection before absorbing the widespread sounds of J Dilla, it’s the feelgood element of his musical upbringing that’s created the framework for his sound that we – along with many others outside his native land have come to love over the last few years. 

Creating the sort of a chunky, groove-ridden house productions akin to fellow Austrian Demuja, Gravy’s biggest inspirations today are Paul Johnson and Underground Resistance – legendary figures that have been paramount to the style of 808 and JV-1080 influenced house music that’s seen him release on Happiness Therapy, Gravy Trax, ForTunea and theBasementDisco’s in 2020 alone.

It’s no secret that the Netherlands, with Amsterdam at its core has become home to some of the most forward-thinking DJs out there, with artists like Jarreau Vandal, Jael and FS Green just some of those who’s sets are both thrilling and unpredictable, with a Soulection-inspired sound that stands at the forefront for the city’s new wave of producers and DJ’s now coming through.
