Anjunabeats is pleased to announce the self-titled debut album from JODA, aka Jono Grant and Darren Tate, releasing August 26. The new double A-side 'Try / Dark Strings' is out now.

JODA are a fresh musical pairing with shared DNA. Both together and apart, Jono Grant and Darren Tate have been there, done that, and bought the vintage synth gear to celebrate.

Grant is one-third of Above & Beyond who, over the course of a two-decade career, have established themselves as one of the biggest electronic groups in the world. Eight studio albums (including one as vocal trance group OceanLab and two acoustic reworks), 17 compilation albums, a film score, and nearing 100 singles speak to output as varied as it is prodigious. Their label Anjunabeats is home to a bustling community of artists with over twenty years of catalog.

As a classically trained musician, songwriter, producer, and hitmaker, Tate is an OG Top of the Pops-botherer. In the early Noughties, at the outset of his career, he appeared on the show three times, once with Angelic, his collaboration with Judge Jules and the latter’s wife, performing classic trance banger It’s My Turn, then twice under the name Jurgen Vries. The following years saw more musical adventures, more Top 40 UK hits (12 in total), and more pseudonyms, including the trance-facing DT8 Project.

In 2003, the pair managed to sync their schedules to work on a couple of tracks, 'Let The Light Shine In' and 'Nocturnal Creatures'. Clearly, there was chemistry here. But as the pair’s respective careers subsequently took them off around the world in opposite directions, reconnecting other than fleetingly was never easy. Then in 2019 Tate returned to his trance roots and signed to Anjunabeats for his DT8 Project releases. Around the same time, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary, 'The Last Glaciers'.

“I'm musical, but I've never done a score before, which would be quite an undertaking. And I knew Darren was massively experienced at doing that, and I've always admired what he does in his film work. So my first thought was: why don't we do it with Darren?”

Jono and Darren got stuck into composing together, and it became a dream project all-around – not least because it sparked further ideas. So, JODA was born. Working in Tate’s studio in suburban north London, and A&B’s south London HQ, the pair were in a creative bubble during the early days of the pandemic. And the partnership proved fruitful.

An artful evocation of electronic music’s decade-zero, 'Try' is "rooted in classic songwriting", according to Grant, taking a page from classic synthpop. Then there’s the glitchy instrumental 'Dark Strings', influenced by darker sounds.

'JODA', their debut album, releases this summer. For now, though, Jono Grant and Darren Tate are simply happy that a project that began almost when neither of them was looking, in the midst of lockdowns, has turned out exactly and as fully as they imagined. Unforced, unhurried, and only done for love: this is a passion project of the best kind.

Working in Tate’s studio in suburban north London, and A&B’s south London HQ, the pair were in a creative bubble during the early days of the pandemic. And the partnership proved fruitful.

It was as if this pair of young-minded veterans were finding themselves all over again. Aptly enough, that fed into 'We Find Ourselves', featuring Grant's own vocals.

“Darren had the idea of using the ARP Odyssey for the bass sound,” explains Grant, “and it sounds very retro. We were listening to stuff like the Drive soundtrack by Kavinsky. So the tempo of the track actually comes from that style of music. We wouldn't have ended up at 110 BPM if it wasn't for listening to that kind of music."

“It's one of the great things about doing this job: that we get to do this job!” concludes Darren Tate, beaming. “Jono and I love making music, we get on really well together, so we have fun doing it. We naturally have perfectionist instincts, but the vibe is the most important thing. So this is also rough around the edges in all the right ways."

“It absolutely is a passion project,” affirms Jono Grant. “The other thing was, of course, we've done this over the pandemic. So it was cathartic. We were lucky enough to be able to work. And this was therapy of the best kind.”

Above & Beyond - Blue Sky Action (EDX's Indian Summer Remix) is releasing this month.

A Pete Tong endorsed anthem and immediate festival favourite, Above & Beyond's "Blue Sky Action" (feat. Alex Vargas) has been turning heads globally throughout the summer of 2014. Emotive and atmospheric in typically epic proportions, "Blue Sky Action" now sees a re-imagining by long-time friend of the Anjuna family Maurizio Colella, aka EDX. 

Equally adept at creating peak-time anthems or contemporary progressive deep house, Maurizio has long been admired by Above & Beyond for his dexterity of sound and memorable melodies. Taking a deeper approach reminiscent of recent hits "Cool You Off", "Air For Life" and "Reckless Ardor", EDX's "Blue Sky Action" remix is an unflinching dance floor mover. If much of the mindset and mantra behind Above & Beyond over the last quarter of a century has been born from the idea of connection, then their fifth artist album ‘Bigger Than All Of Us’ is best summed up in one word: reconnection. 

Following their first single, ‘Quicksand (Don’t Go)’, Above & Beyond are back with the latest chapter of their ‘Bigger Than All Of Us’ story, ‘Carry Me Home’. This latest single is the second of several contributions to the album from longtime collaborator Zoë Johnston, who has worked with the band since the 2004 classic ‘No One On Earth’. 

“I think sometimes we’re so used to carrying everything (worries, responsibilities, fears) by ourselves, that we forget how blissful it can be to have someone step in and say “let me help you”. Carry Me Home is a celebration of being seen and being loved”, Zoë Johnston explains. 

Debuted live on SiriusXM, ‘Carry Me Home’ has become a staple in recent live performances, played out to tens of thousands of fans across Ultra Music Festival and two weekends of Coachella, where the band debuted their brand-new stage production - showcasing an elevated live show experience like never before.

The band’s fifth studio album, ‘Bigger Than All Of Us’, explores the theme of reconnection – a message that will come to life on their upcoming tour, both musically and visually, through their bold new stage concept. 

“Our music has always been about togetherness, connection, and the shared emotional experience,” the band says. “This tour—and this stage—is a celebration of that feeling, brought to life in a new way.”

If much of the mindset and mantra behind Above & Beyond over the last quarter of a century has been born from the idea of connection, then their fifth artist album ‘Bigger Than All Of Us’ is best summed up in one word: reconnection. 

The depth of those intuitive reconnections, both between the three band members and with their inner circle of trusted collaborators, is evidenced in the latest single 'Start A Fire’. Originated as a deep instrumental cut from Paavo Siljamäki’s vaults, it’s a demo that he estimates is “easily seven, eight years old. Tony [McGuinness] had always said: ‘I like this...’ Then as we were entering this album process, Tony's like: ‘Hey, I've written something on this! Then everybody's going: ‘Oh my God, this is great!"

"I have a notebook that I keep for song ideas", says McGuinness. "I had this thought a few years back, 'There’s enough of you in me to start a fire' and after dwelling on it for a few months I found that it worked great over a piece of music Paavo had written. I had just that one line for years, until I went to The Gorge two years ago and one afternoon the verses came together. I was trying to do something conversational, like one of Dire Straits love songs. I think it’s ended up being one of our favourites."

“That’s been really nice for me,” continues Siljamäki, “because it's something that I completely forgot that I'd created. Then I get something fresh from Tony, and his input reignites my excitement. And then, it would have never been as good if it didn't have Richard’s new vocal.” It is, he concludes, “that thing where it's the power of a team.”

Now in its completed form, the track features Richard Bedford singing Tony McGuinness’s lyrics and melody line.

Of course, it’s not the first time Richard Bedford has teamed up with Above & Beyond on a Tony McGuinness-written song — see beloved classics “Sun & Moon”, “Thing Called Love”, and "Northern Soul", to name a few.

Debuted at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this past April, "Start A Fire” kicked off an Above & Beyond set that would become a defining moment in the ‘Bigger Than All Of Us’ campaign.
