Have I been to Amara? Like anyone who has, I’ve no way of knowing for sure. 

I am told she is wrapped in a blue-grey fog that extends like an aura for miles in all directions. As certain kinds of fog have a way of doing, it only makes itself known to you when you are already well within its grasp. At best, the traveller may remember entering and exiting the hazy periphery of this city, but whatever comes to pass within is impossible to recall, and one can only recognize signs in the traces it leaves behind in the mind and body. This may be as subtle as a change in the way you speak, as disquieting as an unaccountable bruise or scrape on the skin, or as drastic as a sudden change in the length of your hair. 

Recently, lovers have told me that my way in bed has somehow changed, that the color of my eyes has grown cooler and softer. Flavors that I once detested are now among my most cherished. Certain objects or images — a marble figurine, a drop of blood hanging from a small cut on my finger, a glass bowl shot through with broken sunlight — have stirred up in me the faintest and most curious ecstasy. It is as though, by some association conjured in these moments, I behold not a memory in itself but the effects it has on everything around it, the lines of sentiment that ripple across the waters of my mind from the invisible impression of an unknown stone.

A city will change you, slowly in time, in ways you may not notice as they set in. But what if the city that changes you is not so much a place as a strange and beautiful void, one that quietly haunts the heart, and from which no memory can escape?

Silky Jazz (the name is a nod to his fave tenor, Pharoah Sanders) is a filmmaker + Melbourne’s MOST ear-bending dj + GREATEST music finder, some formative music memories of mine are hearing Antuong play in support of HTRK, his thoughtful afternoon set at ABSORBED this year & his collab mix with Bextaism for Bleus, which I’ve listened to a hundred times since early 2023
 
Silky Jazz, about the mix:

“Naturally as a filmmaker, I am drawn to storytelling and approach music mixes with a similar mindset.  With this particular one, the starting point was on sonic texture – rather than traditional melody – as a way to form a narrative.  A big inspiration was Toru Tanemitsu’s musique-concrete soundtrack to Kwaidan, a Japanese folk-horror film from 1965. While his score builds an atmosphere of dread, the sound on this mix is more akin to something trancey and ASMR-ish – at least to my ears”

This month on A--Z we are diving into the watery world of artist and DJ Selica.

This mix is a cathartic fusion of cavernous reverbs, lush pad layers, undulating FM textures, and trance-inducing loops – all glued together by transient rhythms and percussive hits that all seems to come from the same universe despite the mix’s diverse range. Dream-like transitions carry us through a montage of oscillator lullabies, many of which are reminiscent of early ambient experiments from artists like The Orb and Jan Jelinek; though this mix never loses its contemporary edge…we're using laptops to make music now, after all. In any case we would love to hear this out loud in a cathedral, no matter the era.

Based in Brooklyn, NY, Selica is also part of the newly formed duo Admiration, whose debut single is out now, with more releases to come. [Check them out here ↗]
