Release Promo Review

Following up their excellent first release with Kamilo Sanclemente, Skanda Records presents a new single from Srinivas & Armaan. Based in India, Srinivas Rao aka Srinivas first came to our attention in 2015 with releases via Electronic Tree and Low Pressings, before going on to land projects with Balkan Connection, Bonzai Progressive and PHW Elements across the next three years. Although relatively quiet in recent years, Srinivas returns in a big way alongside newcomer and fellow countryman Armaan with a new single entitled 'Querida'. 

The creative synergy between Srinivas & Armaan comes across with great strength as the duo marry warm, free flowing grooves with cross cultural motifs and emotive melodies. Highlighting the concise six minute journey is the distinctive Dilruba, a soulful sounding, bowed Indian instrument which comes off quite transcendent here. Expertly juxtaposed with fluttery melodic concepts, it makes for a unique and enlightening dance floor experience that should send people home with a smile. An excellent second release for Skanda Records who have gotten their journey off to a great start. Highly recommended.

Zephyr Music opens the summer season by welcoming Vaedar back to the label for a new single. Hailing from India, Vaedar first emerged just over a year ago with a pair of releases via Zephyr label affiliate Abstract Space. With a sound that incorporated an old school progressive house vibe with an uplifting musical appeal, Vaedar would quickly be recognized by the progressive music community as a name to watch. 2023 has seen the Indian talent emerge further with a string of projects for Zephyr. Across a prolific three-month stretch, Vaedar has recorded three remixes for the Indian imprint, ultimately leading to his debut solo single ‘Sigma’, alongside remixes from FALKO 33 and JOLO.

Vaedar’s melody crafting prowess is on full display here as ‘Sigma’ lands as one of his most heartfelt productions to date. Nostalgic arps, trance-inspired melodies and wispy effects paint a colourful wave of texture, while bubbly basslines and pulsating beats translate that message to the dance floor. Undeniably old school, it’s retro-qualities work well, particularly across a quirky break where subtle modulation perfectly preludes a playful, childlike finale.

Returning to Zephyr for the first remix is FALKO 33 who makes his eighth appearance on the label here. Also laying claim to projects or for Ambi Records and Electronic Tree, FALKO 33’s deeper sound has worked amazingly well on ‘Sigma’. From stripped back beginnings comes flickering arps, emerging atmospheres and haunted vocal pads. Hopeful and positive throughout, it’s nostalgic chord stabs provide a strong emotional theme across the first movement, perfectly setting up a break which is both tranquil and uplifting, before a smooth segue cues a gorgeous meditative finale.

The release concludes with JOLO returning to the label for the second and final remix of ‘Sigma’. South African artist Johan Loubser aka JOLO has found a comfortable home on Zephyr since making his label debut last year. The Lichtenburg resident has now appeared on the label twelve times across a ten month creative stretch. Continuing to build a bond with the label moving forward, JOLO dials in a solid reedition of ‘Sigma’ which complements the previous two versions quite nicely. The pacier tempo of the original is well-maintained, as are it’s retro-progressive qualities, but there is an added edge here with tougher kick drums and meaner percussion paving the way for a wall of harmonious sound, a magical moment which is not only sure to captivate your dance floor, but also rounds out the release on a strong note. Highly recommended.

PREMIERE: Vaedar - Sigma (Falko 33 Remix) [Zephyr Music]

Aethereal 
Presenting 53rd release on Aethereal, we come to underground progressive arena with Leo Baroso, more influenced to us through his tribal rhythms. Being consistent on Abstract Space Records, Leo drop-ship "Aurora", a dark labyrinth tune with exclusive remixes from Greg J & Yohmss, Laurent Chanal and Another Aspect which aggregates the contrasting sides of this composite devising.
The release initiates with the original “Aurora", a sure club dagger with a warm bass and a classic synth stab which evolves along with the lively groove with enduring plucks. The breakdown introduces a symphonic key which surely makes it worth your wait to follow up the acute. 
On remix duty, debuting on Aethereal is duo Another Aspect, from Berlin that latterly are undertaking Progressive World, through their exotic-end productivity. Here they subsume into a superlative coalesce of drive, effervescence and harmonic veneer to construct a dark underground vibe. 
Next is French duo Greg J & Yohmss, who returns on the label, using a compendious spectrum of melody plucks, tingling arps and different elements to build their state of mind. This one is surely a banger for a late-night groove for the dancefloor.
Lastly we have French DJ-Legend Laurent Chanal bringing a moving and exerting emotional touch through its serene pads and a profound flammatory bass line that surely impacts its listener’s soul. The breakdown catapults to a lushy pads and splendid original piano. Melody joining transient plucks before jumping back into the infectious groove.
