Illusions of Power is about political corruption, the collapse and seizure of control, sparring nations, war, drugs, gangs and the fraudulent, media systems that spin it all into rolling, fear-mongering 24 hour loops. Illusions of Power is about the horrors of the modern world and a humanity haunted by its bloodied past. But as every long dark tunnel comes to an end, Illusions of Power too has its glimmers of hope.

Written with an arsenal of hardware gear from the Londoner’s studio in Berlin, Dax J’s Electric Deluxe debut is a militant, yet atmospherical dancefloor assault. As he has proven over a slew of EPs for EarToGround Records and labels like LDNWHT, Deeply Rooted, Clergy and his own Monnom Black label, his sound is a compelling and thoroughly contemporary one. Dax J’s productions are typically mercurial, informed by the past and fortified with a wide range of influences from acid and ambient, to jungle and drum & bass. His EPs are rich, kaleidoscopic ventures involving an array of tempos and moods, and Illusions of Power is no different.

In “Reign Of Terror” and “Harry The Hatchet” on the A-side, and “Zulu Nation” and “The Quest” on the flip, Dax J flexes sinewy techno muscle in his rave-inciting idiom where the new and the oldschool collide. Then in the angst-ridden “Cartagena Square” (built around field recordings from Cartagena in South America) and dreamy breakbeats of “Breaking Visions” Illusions of Power present two very different diversions from the dance. In one there is light and a sense of relief; in the other, shadowy omens of the world are massing. The future is full of promise, but be on your guard.

Hioll is the actual boss of Abstraction, the first Cuban techno based label worldwide. He already released several tracks on Bullfinch, Tentacles, Quilla, WOOD and his own label.
His sound is a blend of dark Techno, fine percussion phases and an amazing melancholic touch. Always trying to put some freshness into his music, Hioll delivers a brand new two track EP on his label, Abstraction.

For the second reference of Abstraction we present Hioll, owner and visible head of the label. He shows us two pecualistic tracks fusing purist techno rhythms with more melodic and harmonious elements. "Firmina" plays with the rhythm at the same time as it does with the main melody, taking us on a constant journey and "Susage" is armed with more atmospheric lines without letting the rhythm fall throughout its travesy.

We welcome Keji Itan, the youngest artist on the label. With just twenty years old he is one of the best techno producers in Cuba. For his debut he brings four tracks that immerse us in a world of distant sounds and melodies with repetitive and highly contagious patterns. "Space Time" introduces an eternal journey of euphoria and auditory pleasure, "Arrest Warrant" presents a sticky harmony and very dynamic percussions, "Moon" is the quietest song of the four but with a very powerful bass and finally "B15" proposes an aggressive and rapid cadence, being the rave part of this release. There is no doubt that this is a very solid pack for the fifth reference of Abstraction.

It has been two years since the first compilation on the Various Artists series (PEVA) of Pi Electronics and the concept has stayed true to its aim: to present a coherent selection of the label’s favourite collaborators from the roster and parties over the years. Bringing together Greek and international artists, this compilation opens with a 10 minute recording by the combined forces of Orphx and JK Flesh (Justin Broadrick), from a live performance recorded in Amsterdam. Meanwhile we also showcase the resurfacing of Vofa, the joint project of producers Sawf and ANFS. There is a variety of options in this 13 tracks release; from the raw and harsh textures of An-i and New Frames, to Lycurgus live drum set recordings, Kondaktor’s African percussive electronics and Sarin’s EBM infused techno. Some more techno interpretations, such as the hypnotic moods of Stave and Fragedis, or the more punchy sounds of Restive Plaggona and Poison Green. These shape the full picture of this second Pi Electronics compilation titled ‘Divide & Rule’.
