"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate." (Matt 23: 37-39)

The TRUE children of Jerusalem are trodden down due to the disobedience of their ancestors. This same disobedience carries on today which is why the "negro" is ever oppressed. 

Jerusalem is is a reminder of how we placed ourselves  in the predicament and what we should do in turning unto Christ Jesus.
