"I’ve met Griffin aka Francis Inferno out and about quite a few times now and have to say he’s fully good vibes all the way. The other week Lexx sent me a track by him that I’d never checked before on Superconscious that is pretty flipping great and here’s another new one by him. The main mix of Oasis sounds like an old Italian vibe, one of those ones with a breakbeat running underneath, though with the break pushed to the front which works perfectly for these times. Also great is the Erotikk mix of ‘Oasis’ which comes on like a late 80s / early 90s B side secret weapon and ‘Mating Rituals’ which rounds the record off goes all tribal and chant-y before dropping into a messed up little break and out again. It all sounds like he’s having loads of fun but the throw it in the pot attitude works perfectly." - Testpressing

Anyone who has been following the music industry the past few years knows this fact: Vinyl sales are up! And up big! In fact, sales of vinyl in 2016 reached a 25-year high as consumers young and old have found new satisfaction from embracing physical formats of music.

However, this recent trend did not happen out of thin air. Independent labels, like Helsinki imprint Common Labour, have been the influencers behind the scenes making the shift happen by implementing policies where they exclusively release material on vinyl only formats. This has been a policy at Common Labour since their start in 2013, and although I doubt the journey has been easy, the label has developed one of the strongest discographies in the underground house scene – sporting phenomenal releases from the likes of artists such as Lukas Lyrestam, Kask, Powel, and Saine.

To celebrate this 5-year journey, the Finnish collective has decided to come out with a new compilation as part of their Odd Jobs series. Aptly titled Odd Jobs Vol. 3, this record pays homage to their hand-stamped, sticker-sealed history. Consisting of 4-tracks, this release features music from the likes of Sames, pothOles, Thomas Wood, and Bolting Bits fave Nachtbraker!

For the A1, the Dutch producer has come out with his very own original Tobogo, which goes much deeper than his usual array of turbo-funked disco bangers. This song actually gives off a distinctly more techno vibe than what we’re used to, and we like it! The tension Nachtbraker is able to establish from the get-go is something to behold, and he does his best in building it up and bringing it down throughout its entirety. Our favorite moment comes in around the 2 minute mark, when he uses a simple vocal sample to cut through all the angst like butter – unleashing a groove that you can’t help but bob your head too.

Felix Leifur has seriously been putting in some hours in the studio. His new EP titled Hamburg 3011 will be released on the mighty Dirt Crew Recordings, available on wax on 26th October and digitally on the 29th. The EP in true Felix style is house music influenced by jazz and hip hop. We have the pleasure of presenting the premiere of the opening track, which gives a great introduction to the EP.

The infectiously hazy first track of the Icelandic man’s newest EP is titled Between Us. The piece starts out with a spacey layering of tribal drums, which are looped to create an infectious rhythm. A hypnotic vocal floats into the mix to keep the tension spiralling, before a deep kick drum drops in and brings some order. A deep sustained almost disharmonic chord rings out to solidify a darker tone in the track, which is complimented by a groovy yet simple bass line at 1 minute 20 seconds.

The energy of the track swirls around in true Felix Leifur style, although this feels slightly different to his previous work, it feels more experimental, as if he is pushing the boundaries just a touch further. An open hat rings through the mix to get this track swinging and a distant jazz trumpet sings melodies in the distance, before hitching a ride from the outskirts to arrive at the forefront of the mix. The filter of a synth roars open to provide some grit, some dirt, and supplies some more emotion.

The eclectic feel of this EP is very powerful, and one to definitely check out.

PREMIERE: Felix Leifur - Between Us

It’s been 5 years since North Lake delivered the ‘Moonwalker’ 12” on Phonica’s main label and it’s telling that to this day it’s one of the most requested for a repress. That’s not to say he’s been idle in the years since then, his releases for Life & Death, Permanent Vacation and Ellum Audio have cemented his reputation as a trusted producer in the world of leftfield Techno.

North Lake is Michigan-based Isaac Delongchamp and his ‘Hearing Voices’ EP features four tracks that illustrate his influences, stretching from classic Detroit Techno to Deep House and even New Age and Ambient. In fact, these four tracks could work as a story, from the opening title track, ‘Hearing Voices’ through two peak-time housers into the after-hours vibe of the final track.

‘Hearing Voices’ is the standout here based on a beautiful looping keyboard melody which subtly grows, progressing and ascending to a deceptive moment of silence before returning to its original melody. Next up ‘Vibing To Your Vibe’ is a perfect combination of organic and electronic elements with little synth details and an 80s Electro vibe adding to the 4/4 groove.

On the flip, the simple but devastatingly effective Omar S-esque ‘Magic Ride’, the EP’s peak energy moment and the logical follow-up to his first Phonica release with Dixon-favourite ‘Marlborol Noir’. Finally, the record comes to an end with ‘Teenage Heartbreak’, a mellow, classy House production that works just as well on the dancefloor as well as home listening.
